Gamespot, lol, they're a joke when it comes to our genre. One only has to look at their 2.6 score for barrow hill to realise they should stick to the genre they know

I just wanted to make this comment to anyone who is inclined to include Gamespot as a reliable source of information for AG's.  As a retailer they currently appear to now allocate only about 1% of their shelf space to PC games, 10-20% of those being adventure titles.  The other 99% i.e. console games, hardware, used DVD's etc. must surely be far more profitable. Isn't it obvious here what their intent is? Duh.

There is nothing wrong with Gamespot. They rate games based on their merit. Take a look at these ratings from Gamespot.

GameGamespot Score

Murder in the Abbey 7.0

Dracula: Origin 7.0

Overclocked: A History of Violence   7.5

Jack Keane   7.0

Cleopatra: Riddle of the Tomb   7.0

Nibiru: Age of Secrets   7.5

Syberia   9.1

Gamespot is also a source of information to look up for upcoming Adventure games. A sampling of upcoming adventure games include:

Dead Mountaineer's Hotel

Everlight

Vampyre Story, A

Stroke of Fate, A

So Blonde

Adam Syndrome

Still Life 2

Gamespot's work on Adventure games should be appreciated. That's better than having nothing from them

Not really. I don't think any true adventure gamer could care less if gamespot never reviewed another adventure. There is nothing written at gamespot about an adventure that is enlightening, or that isn't or hasn't already been written better at JA, AG and gameboomers.

In my opinion, gamespot make a token contribution towards this genre, and would rather concentrate on shootem ups. The only possible benefit might be to encourage 'railgun kid' into this genre who wouldn't normally consider it, and in so doing, encouraging the development of more adventure games.  I've never seen a gamespot score which is higher than any proper adventure sites score, and on several occassions they give scores so much lower that it's mind boggling. When they give scores like 2.8 for barrow hill and 6.8 fair for GK3, 2 games which have become classics, particularly GK3 anyway, they can hardly be taken seriously. There are also plenty of older games at gamespot which have never been reviewed and scored, where those games have received very high scores elsewhere. They don't really care. They still don't seem to understand that most adventure gamers don't care as much about graphics as they do about the story and puzzles. If a game is nodal point based, that's a no no to them.

AG rating fairness at Gamespot has always been hit or miss.

Their criticisms and low score of GK3 in 1999 are infamous - as is their naming Grim Fandango best overall PC game of the year in 1998.

Unlike many mainstream game sites though, their overall quality of writing is pretty good and you have to admit that their free game guides are great.

Gamespot is also very good when covering RPGs, which share many of the same traits with adventures.

In general though, I don't even bother reading AG reviews at mainstream sites. I mean, why bother when niche sites like JA do such a superior job.

However, as I've mentioned on these forums several times before, the average scores here and on other AG sites often tend to be too high. There simply haven't been that many near-perfect (yet alone perfect "10"
games created in any genre and that is basically what an A+ stands for.

Cheers, Terry
