1. ftp - after a couple of decades of working on a pc, you would think I would have the hang of it by now. But I'm constantly confused.

2. Ebay dimwits - I post a dvd collection for sale, says in my posting 'in excellent, like new condition"  It's inevitable that some dimwit writes and asks "
oes this include the box" or "are there any small scratches anyhere?"  Today was my breaking point, I wrote back and asked "What part of excellent, like new condition don't you understand?  Please do not bid on my item as I will cancel your bid.

I'm sure I'll be adding to this list

Well Randy, I hate it when I see an item I want and the American vendor refuses to ship overseas.  Like.... do we have foreign germs or something? .... won't we give it a good home? ... is it unpatriotic to buy an overseas stamp?  Don't they realise the internet has shrunk the planet now and we're all just one big happy marketplace?

Really, REALLY gets my goat.

Sometimes I send them nice polite requests - which they ignore.  >

I hear you about FTP, Randy.  You'd think that there would be One True Client for Windows by now, but if it exists I haven't seen it.

If it's any consolation, Caroline, even here in Canada we often get the shaft on shipping from people and entities selling online.  Never mind that the United States and Canada have largely been a single market going on two hundred years.  [smiley=shrug.gif]

Some electronics (in particular myriad devices related to digital television, I've discovered) are all but impossible to get locally, and you'll be hard pressed to find an outfit shipping electronics across the border at a fair fee.  And then you have duties.  Bother.

It gets my goat when traders on GTZ won't ship to Canada because of the "high" cost.  Any games I've received from the States have seemed to have really low postage on them, compared with what we have to pay for postage here in Canada.  Now our postage is so high that it's no longer worth my while to ship older games with boxes.  I can probably buy them cheaper!

I have bought from Canada and the postage is easily three times that of America.   Usually $18 from Canada and only $6 from USA.  That's just regular postage for jewel case games.  I really loathe the guys who insist on shipping it certified with insurance.

But two xmases ago I bought a construction game from a lady in the middle of USA somewhere who'd never posted anything international, never even spoken to a foreigner.  She went to such trouble packing it, and I met all the postage fees and it arrived standard mail within 10 days.  Perfect.  I wish everyone was so willing to step outside their comfort zone.

I've never been asked to pay duties JKing.  I suspect there aren't any for single small items.

Come now, JKing - even 'often' is an understatement.  Replace that with "most often".  Anyway, strangely enough when I shipped TO Canada, even an insured package was relatively cheap. As in $5.  Yes, that is WITH insurance.

So why the heck is Canadian postage so high that it costs $18 to ship FROM Canada! >
?   Not that it bothers me too much. For some reason Canadian sellers don't seem to have a very wide variety of games - much worse than the UK, even.  But lets not start talking shipping from the UK. ($%%$^  GBP!)  Now that's expensive shipping!

Because I love to pick nits I'll point out that the postage on the package was 47.5R, or roughly 6.20$.  I don't remember what the postage was the other way, though.

^&*()!@#$% Nitpicker!    [smiley=laughing.gif]   Hey, the exchange rate's gone up!

Anyway - I was talking in general as from the US, as I generally conduct these kinds of transactions through relatives in the USA.

Are you talking about straight FTP using dos-like commands or FTP as it relates to EBay?

If you are talking of the former, then there are tons of programs available that allow you to drag and drop file and they will upload or download.  I've actually used FireFTP which seems to work very well, it's a free plug in for FireFox.

If you simply want to upload files to e-bay, may I recommend you use Turbo Lister? It's a bit of software that allows you to list software off-line and then upload the entire listing, images included, to e-Bay in a single stroke. Otherwise, I would recommend FileZilla client.

I was talking about ftp in general, I don't even have a clue what you are talking about using ftp with Ebay.

Anyhow, the guy from ebay wrote me back and said - honest to God, you couldn't make this stuff up - "FYI...Excellent condition is a vague term. You should mention on your auction page the specific conditions of the DVD discs (i.e. no scratches), the DVD cases, and the outer box."

What an f'ing idiot.  I wrote him back and said, 'In Excellent, like-new condition is NOT a vague term.  You are just an anal jerk."

If there were some small scratches, etc., I would have posted, "In good condition, has some small scratches."  I swear, people like him just make life miserable for others.

I think I'm similar but simply not as outspoken ... I'm also more "diplomatic" (read 'afraid') --- also I don't own a games-site !   [smiley=devil_smiley_grintail.gif]

In addition, my language is not so salty !!    [smiley=grin.gif]

Yes, I am getting worse as I get older, but it also gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling like I just wet myself when I let loose

The British produce a very funny program called Grumpy old men and another called Grumpy old women.  Basically they film middle aged celebrities moaning about whatever gets their goat about modern life, queues, young people, modern manners, technology, etc etc.  Then they cut and paste them into snippets.  My kids think it's hilarious and I must admit so do I.  But, just lately, I've noticed myself drifting down this path and I think it really must be our age.

I've seen "Grumpy Old Men" and it was hilarious, but I found myself secretly agreeing with a lot of what they said.  Showing my age here!

E-Bay dimwits , I've known a few . It makes no difference whether you live in close proximity - they ( E-Bay people ) will seem to figure that you don't ??!! Incredible idiocy with the realms of fairness . When you actually ask them to send it some " vastly" different way (  i.e. not using fedex ) , problems ensue . Well , not just . Wonderful . Not to mention the myriad pleasurable people that one seems to have contact with whilst on E-Bay . Fantastic tool that has been significantly destroyed . Here's to the usage of the internet . Cheers .
