I'd like to assign a difficulty grade of 1 to 10 (1 being easiest, 10 being most difficult) to the adventure games most often discussed and played. I understand that this is rather subjective, but maybe a consensus could be reached if enough people respond.

Feel free to list however many of the games you've played and give a difficulty grade of 1-10 beside them.

I'll start with some well-known games, but that doesn't mean you need to agree with my numbers- am really looking for an average or consensus. One dilemma is are there any games that deserve a 1 or a 10??

This is an impossible question to answer! I think it's pretty much impossible to find a game that deserves either a 1 or a 10

I noticed dimitris gave Black Dahlia a 10 - is he saying that the game is impossible to finish, because if so I certainly dont agree  -   yes, it is a hard game but most of the puzzles can be completed with a lot of perseverance. A lot of the puzzles are not logical, but then many of the older adventure game puzzles weer not

Interesting thread.  I'll try...(SirDave, in my humble opinion, it would have been easier with a difficulty grade from 1 to 5, a "Lickert" scale)
I'll try with the most "popular", first:

GK1: 8 (the rama/vodoo code' translation  ???)
GK2: 7
GK3: 8 (Le Serpent Rouge puzzle adds a couple of points)
TLJ: 3.5
Syberia: 2
Police Quest: (average) 6
Darkseed (aver.): 7.5
LSL: (aver.): 5
AMFV (is this one popular? :
): 9
Black Dahlia: 8.5
Monkey Island: 6
Grim Fandango: 7
Myst: 6

I'll come with more later...Do I have to use the same scale?

Great responses so far- this is exactly what I envisioned. If we can get enough responses, I plan to calculate the average figures and place them at the end of the thread. I think it will be helpful information since newer players will know which are the easier games and also, more experienced players might have a few unplayed games and have a preference for how difficult they want their next played game to be.

I decided on a scale of 1-10 because it does allow a little more flexibility; one game might be just slightly more difficult than another.

Another interesting result is not just the absolute difficult value but the difficulty relationship between games in a group. For instance, Dimi gave slightly different absolute numbers for GK1-3 than Malia, but they both were consistent in that GK2 was easier than GK1 or 3. I find that useful and interesting to know!

Also, I'm glad to see that values of 10 were given to some games (Dimi-Black Dahlia, Monkeybone-Schizm). I'm sure some of us are looking forward to tackling what are considered to be the most difficult games and seeing if we can solve them.

Please keep'em coming...

The future ain't what it used to be!

You have to calculate those averages, SirDave! (or I'll do it, at least for me... :
)
It's a great idea, btw.

You may have a point with the "old" players...I think we should start posting about not_so_popular games, and perhaps we'll bump into a nice surprise.  But about the newer players, I couldn't say for sure...I'm not convinced which one is really easy.  If you've played many adv, you gain experience, so to speak, and learn some tricks.  I believe my opinions can't be considered too objective (even though I try), even when they are similar to Dimi's and Monkeybone's.  Instead I guess it can be seen as the result of actually having  played (and in some cases, replayed) those games already.
But, anyway, new players will soon become experienced if they play ALL the games we've qualified as easy... :

I decided on a scale of 1-10 because it does allow a little more flexibility; one game might be just slightly more difficult than another.

Sure, I said easier thinking about the statistic part of the thread...But I see you can handle that pretty well.

Great idea... there are usually difficulty ratings in most reviews, but having an average based on the experienced views of a whole lot of devoted players instead of a single-sided opinion is indeed worthwhile.

Schizm - 9.3
Riven - 8.5
Sam n' Max Hit the Road - 7.3
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis - 7
King's Quest VI - 7 (with the full ending)
Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes, The Serrated Scalpel - 7
Monkey Island I - 7
Gabriel Knight - 6.5
The Day of the Tentacle - 6
Grim Fandango - 6
Laura Bow and the Dagger of Amon Ra - 6
Legends of Kyrandia II, The Hand of Fate - 6
Monkey Island II - 6
Broken Sword, Shadow of the Templars - 5.5
Legends of Kyrandia I - 5
Blade Runner - 4
The Longest Journey - 4
Myst - 4
Atlantis III - 3.5
Full Throttle - 3
Myst III, Exile - 3
Syberia - 2

Just to name a few... how extensive do you want this list to be?

This is a really interesting idea SirDave - I wouldn't dare try to rate games I've played because I feel it's just too subjective.   However it's really interesting to see how other people rate them.

Gosh Michal, that's a lot of games to remember, I've given too many away and not seen them again (to my son actually - little so-and-so) used to say he'd copy them and give them back.  Ha Ha.   and to really brown me off, hasn't even played most of them.

These are my suggestions:

Monkey Island 2 - 5
Monkey Island 3 - 4
GK1 - 7
GK3 - 9 (Le Serpent Rouge was really tough)
Laura Bow 1 - 5
Laura Bow 2 - 6
King's Quest V - 5
King's Quest VI - 6
Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Serrated Scalpel - 6
Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Rose Tattoo - 5
Conquests of the Longbow - 4
Shadow of the Comet - 7
Discworld Noir - 7
DOTT - 8
Sam and Max Hit the Road - 7
The Dig - 8
Full Throttle - 5
Cruise for a Corpse - 8

Still got loads of other, more recent games to play though! I should mention that it's years since I last played some of these adventures, and I might revise the scores if I did so again.

I was kinda wondering about that Cordes - yeah, your rating was almost the same as mine. I consider TLJ very long but not difficult. But that could be just me.

BTW you must have played slightly more than 10 games

Hey Rael-

Is your list of 1 to 10 a grading of quality (ie. your favorites) of the game or difficulty? If so, is Dark Eye just a difficulty level of 1? It's a serious question- I haven't played Dark Eye (though I just bought it); I thought it was considered more difficult though somewhat wierd!

The future ain't what it used to be!

Weeelll... I just started making a short list... and before I knew it I had 50 games. And then I thought, what the heck, let's see if I can remember hundred. And I could

So why not shove that in people's faces. You know, simply to show that just because I'm the top poster doesn't mean I don't know anything about adventures

SirDave, my grading is exclusively difficulty. The Dark Eye (certainly a terrific piece of software) isn't difficult at all. Actually, you can just "click your way" through the story in this game because there aren't puzzles in the straight sense of the word. While this might sound like a big drawback, it really works. In fact, it's so well done, that I think this might be the only game where this kind of gameplay is really effective.
And yes, it's weird - very.
