I am experiencing discs cracking despite all the care I use re use and storage.  I also feel the discs are very hot when they are ejected from the cdrom drive.  Have conflicting reports as to whether this is normal or not.

The discs are the original not burned, they are games (Riven and Pandora Directive)

Hesitate to replace a CDRom if not needed.  And suggestions someone might have as to what is going on.

Some use I do with discs:

store in jewel cases lying flay
when using and changing discs I lay them "info side up" so as not to damage such
try best NOT to touch the side where info is but handle through hole in center of disc etc.

Anymore tips re handling discs?

Might I suggest you burn copies of your deteriorating disks and use them.
cd drives in my experience do heat up the disks, (warm to touch when removing from drive).
Try not to leave disks in drive when computer is switched off.

I almost never run the older games on their original media (be it floppy or cd) - making backup copies (when possible) is the best route.

As an alternative (assuming the content isn't copyright protected), you can make ISO images of the media and mount them with a virtual drive program.  Virtual PC and DOSBox allow you to do the same.

What?

A few years back I built a PC for a relative. While he was trying to copy his music CDs to the hard drive one of them shattered. I did a little research on www.google.com and www.metacrawler.com, it turns out one possible cause is that modern CD players spin much faster than the original 1x, 2x and 6x CD drives and if there is even a hairline fracture on an old CD it may break if you try to use it in a modern CD or DVD drive. Are your CDs breaking while they are in the drive? If so you may need to find an older CD drive to play them or copy them to modern CD or DVD media.

One can also use software to forcibly limit the rotation speed of one's drive, I believe.
You can't kill someone in a studio.

Thanks so very much everyone for all your ideas and suggestions.  Am going to study them carefully and proceed from there.  The idea of old discs on newer drives does sound very promising.

Am a novice really in all of this and not sure I understand some of the ideas here so may be back with some follow up questions.

Again thanks for all the response - very much appreciated.

Am burning copies of my old games as someone suggested so at least I can rest easy re my original discs being safe.  So far so good.

And have found a utility for adjusting drive speed but not sure how to use so rather than get myself in trouble will reserve that option.

Also would anyone know if the new blank discs I bought are now for the faster  CDRom drives and so will not experience the problems older disc might have?

Course the newer games should already be on faster discs for the newer drives corect?

Newer CD's should be just fine with high speed drives.  I've not heard of any issues recently where new games have exploded in the drive.

Don't forget , that some games can't be copied because of the copy protection. You'll be able to burn them but they won't work.

Not all require one either. But the majority of those that do, have one.
