Well that could've been much less insulting.
Unless it was supposed to be funny, in which case it was just as bad as the quoted article.

GR is actually right about White Wolf - it's far from "A" and is a rather crappy game. As well as Tunguska with it's awful dialogs and Atlantis with
Stupid, pointless puzzles, Stupid, pointless dialogue, Cookie-cutter story
. They are wrong with personal insults, of course, as well as Randy. Both articles are no fun.
In case you are wondering what the best-selling pc game in North America was for the third week of July 2008 – according to the retail sales figures compiled by NPD – well, it wasn’t Devil May Cry 4, which received a score of 8 (awesome!) from Games Radar, nor was it Mass Effect which received a score of 9 (awesome!) from Games Radar. Nope, it was little ol’ Nancy Drew: The Phantom of Venice. Now isn’t that a crock of seven-out-of-ten!

Well, this is actually pretty funny. Good sales don't mean a good game, it's obvious.

And why should it? Posting such drivel proves that they are idiots and they deserve being told so.

Randy, give them hell.

Was Shany talking about what Randy said or about what Games Radar wrote?
Because what Games Radar wrote is certainly insulting as well as ill-informed and self-centered.
It just doesn't seem to occur to them that young teenaged and adolescent girls might have different tastes than they do.
Why bother reviewing a game if you have no feel for what the target audience wants?

I also have to side with Randy 100% on this.

The article he responded to was extremely insulting, ignorant, and downright libelous.

This part was certainly libelous:

I actually thought that Randy responded quite politely and was spot on his comments. Very good article, which does make a point.

In celebration of our seven out of ten week, we’ve listed what we feel are the worst offenders that managed to scrape by with an undeserved seven.

Nancy Drew: The White Wolf of Icicle Creek

I"m curious to know what are the other offenders, he/she only mentioned Nancy Drew.

If you're slandered in such a way, and obviously by a very ill informed bunch, a reaction such a Randy's is called for.

I think Randy was very justified in taking action on this. I'm also sorry he didn't mention that most adventure gamers are in fact, women. I know several women from gameboomers.com who enjoys playing the Nancy Drew games.

Interesting, also, that no action were taken before Randy personally got in contact with the CEO...

Wow, step away for several days and miss all the action. I wholeheartedly agree with Randy.  I've grown tired of reading reviews from 'young' twitch jockeys. I supposed it never occurred to them that some people enjoy the mental challenges. I guess as far as they are concerned, If you can't frag it - it ain't fun.

As the one who actually did the review for White Wolf, I found myself once again laughing over the negative comments. Mainly because they made absolutely no point what-so-ever other than to try and insult people. Considering that a significant portion of the AGers and female (maybe even the majority) it shows they have no clue as to who the target audience for the games are.  I'm sure if the target audience for your site is adolescent boys, then you would rip on games like ND. Fortunately for us at JA, that is not the case.

For anyone interested, the other games on that article:
http://www.gamesradar.com/f/shit-games-that-scraped-a-seven-out-of-ten/a-2008072310514413006

Rez - Just an artistic rail shooter in their opinion.

Carol Vorderman’s Sudoku - Not worth paying for since you can get it for free. This is another case of them misunderstanding the market.

NASCAR 07 - Their problem that it's a track racing game. And they haven't played it.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - They don't really explain. But it's a tie-in which means it's usually bad.

America’s Army: Rise of a Soldier - A first person shooter! They found it boring.

EVERY Dragon Ball Z game EVER - More about how the reviewer grew up to realise they weren't that good.

I still think Randy's letter was inapropriate. Swearing at whoever offended you is no way to resolve anything.

America's Army rules.  I think it might have been too realistic (read "difficult"
for them. I spent around 27 hours straight on "the farm" mission. The weapons are highly accurate taking ballistics into consideration. Just because something is in your cross hairs, doesn't mean you will hit it - especially at longer distances.   Kind of funny how people want more realism, but when you give it to them, that whine about it being too hard.  America's Army might have crossed the line from 'game' and been too much 'simulator' for them.

I disagree with many of JA's review scores, and think that overall they are too high.

However, I disagree even more with mainstream sites inflating scores for mainstream games. Most of these games are just as much a rehash as many Adventures, it just seems that many reviewers either ignore that fact, or have just not played the older games. The much praised Bioshock, while a decent, maybe even good game, was largely a simplified version of System Shock 2 in a different setting.

I also feel the text of JAs reviews are of a good standard and length, whereas many of these mainstream reviews drool over the graphics, tell us over and over that the game is awesome, but often neglect to tell us why.

With the poor quality of writing, the pathetically sycophantic reviews and even more so previews, of mainstream sites like GamesRadar, their hypocritical criticisms are just laughable.

As an example of what An Inkling is saying here's IGN's review of Art of Murder:

http://pc.ign.com/articles/895/895192p1.html

The shortcut is that they didn't like it, and gave it an 4.5/10 rating. I haven't played the game, so I don't know if this score is justified. I do feel, however, that most adventure games have a lot of inventory based puzzles whicch are sort of trial and error - and we like it
we adventure gamers

Not like a game say the Nancy Drew games are OK and fine, just don't play them, if you don't like them.

I tend to agree with you on both counts An-Inkling.

Most (but not all) mainstream game-site reviewers do pander pantingly to younger readers that demand the latest graphics and lots of action. They also make a habit of launching into childish rants when reviewing slow-paced, point & click adventures.

What they fail to realize is that these games are specifically designed for generally older, intelligent, experienced players who decidedly don't want action / combat and who care much less about graphic sizzle and more about substance.

It's like the latest crop of chatty, trend-mongering, MTV hype heads reviewing sophisticated jazz music, classic-style literature, traditional gourmet cuisine or fine wines. In short, they don't know what they're talking about and worse, they insist on using their own (relatively) immature, unsophisticated, superficial personal preferences as a universal gauge for what is and is not "good".

Conversely, the reviewers on niche sites like JA tend to be far too forgiving. I totally agree that the overall scores are on average way too high. IMO, an A should be reserved for a very elite group of truly great AGs and an A+ should only be given to the handful of all-time greatest. By that I mean titles that not only display brilliant writing and the highest level of creative artistry but also flawless programming, perfect intefaces / controls, and extermely original puzzles / quests.

Lastly, I've always felt that niche sites like JA should post a big, bold statement atop all their review pages that clearly defines the parameters used for scoring games. This should not in any way be a discalimer or an apology - just a perfectly straight-forward clarification that all review scores are based on comparisons within and ONLY within the niche.

Cheers, Terry

Thanks karla for the link to GR's article & Randy's reply.

The content of GRs article held no surprises at all, as it well represented the hostility towards AGs from mainstream game sites & magazines in general - places that continue to promote introspective, biased & unconstructive views on AGs devoid of any liking for them, understanding of their qualities & target audience.

QUOTE: (from GR referring to grades given to games)
"But once in a while, there’s that rare occasion where you’ve got a few extra dollars burning a hole in your pocket and have enough leftover to splurge on a game that you’re on the fence about. And when it comes to these situations, it’s frustrating when the professional critics seem to be sitting on the same fence as you."

Oh please! If I'm sitting on the fence because I've run out of AGs to play do I suddenly rush out to buy e.g. Grand Theft Auto or to dowload Grand Turismo Prologue just because they're rated highly? No! because I know what the games are about & they're not for me.  The point is that yes, some games may be over-graded but you can't compare grades across genres, if you don't favor a genre there's a good chance you are going to be disappointed.

QUOTE: (from GR)
"Metacritic. Just Adventure writer Ray Ivey gave Nancy Drew: The Haunted Carousel a flawless score and is “looking forward to the next troublesome situation Nancy gets herself into.” We can’t say that we agree with him or the reviewer who gave The White Wolf of Icicle Creek a similarly high grade."

A good example of a biased and unconstructive view devoid of any understanding of the game's qualities & dismissive of it's target audience i.e. young girls.

QUOTE: (from GR)
Niche games like these enjoy inflated scores from niche game review sites like Just Adventure. It’s a symbiotic relationship that’s full of male critics and curious little girls

An unnecessary, very nefarious & extremely ignorant comment. The whole article also subtly harbors underlying sexist & ageist views totally in keeping with those of the majority of mainstream game websites & magazines.

I agree with everything that Randy had to say & feel that his response to the article was constructive & fair & far more polite than deserved in view of many of the comments & those aimed at JA.   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Longterm part-time lurker here.

The article he responded to was extremely insulting, ignorant, and downright libelous.

What comes around goes around. I remember a series of JA+ articles full of prejudices, all for the sake of keeping perpethual myths into place. In their author's world, the gaming media consisted of nothing but twitch jokeys, the #1 enemy of the known adventure gaming world. In their extremely defensive mentality, these articles dug a hole to take cover in and continued to hiss at everybody who dared to even touch their precious, the adventure game. Only that, well, adventure games aren't special. Somebody forgot to told them long ago. They're not in their special class. They're not the fine wine or gourmet cuisine just for being there and trying. Nope, not even close. They're in the same playing field as every other game. While comparing Myth to Serious Sam is obviously a little daft, there's no reason whatsoever to not expect the same crisp writing and plotting from an adventure game than what is found in Psychonauts, Bloodlines or Kotor, for instance.

Sitting in their dark holes, hiding their precious little adventure games from the bad gaming media existing for one simple reason: to wipe adventure gaming out once and for all, it never occured to them how this moronic twitch crowd could give glorious praise to Shadow Of The Colossus, Viva Pinata, LocoRoco or Darwinia alike, while awesomely sophisticated point&clickers like Runaway, Tony Tough, Gilbert Goodmate And The Mushroom Of Phungoria et all apparently didn't even tickle their fancy once. How dare they.

This article belongs to said series of articles, by the way. Not only does it keep re-telling the same old story over and over again until it hopefully rings true to its audience. It also sinks down to the Quandaryland levels by taking quotes totally out of context, since within context they wouldn't fit the picture the article's trying to paint anymore.

Need some proof? How about this quote from Tyler Nygate's review of Secret Files Tunguska - "you'll find yourself skipping through the game's lengthy and frequent dialogues as fast as your right-clicking finger will allow in this good looking, yet derivative adventure title."

Here's the full paragraph from the review:

Unfortunately, even with the aid of the magnifying glass, the pacing of Tunguska's plot still crawls at a snail's pace. The mystery surrounding Nina's father's abduction and the Tunguska event is revealed all at once during the last few minutes of the game and is a major letdown. The voice acting will also grate your ears, with Nina's squeaky teenage voice as Tunguska's worst offender. Couple that with unconvincing performances from the rest of the cast and you'll find yourself skipping through the game's lengthy and frequent dialogues as fast as your right-clicking finger will allow in this good looking, yet derivative adventure title.

But maybe that's just the kind of stuff an audience

who cares much less about graphic sizzle and more about substance.

Mind you, a response to the article over at GamesRadar is one thing, the way it was done, publicly even, is another. A review is an opinion, there is no RIGHT or WRONG to be found in here at all. And while The NEW State Of Adventure Gaming #1 rightfully demands respect for such a piece of opinion, it also fires back with the exact same kind of ammo - prejudice, assumptions and really, really awful generalizations. And yes, that won't get you terribly far.

In regards to this topic, I couldn't care less what individual reviewers have written about any games on this or any other website.

You quoted me (prominently) in your above reply and the comment you quoted pertained specifically to and ONLY about the libelous parts of Games Radar's piece that Randy was responding to. Everything else is irrelevant.

As for your insulting little tirade aimed at we members of the adventure game community, it was very presumptuous and extremely condescending. The fact is that several people here avidly play and enjoy a wide range of games from all genres. The majority however prefer to stick with classic-style PC adventures BECAUSE they are slow-paced, focused on puzzle solving and have relatively low system requirements.

That preference does NOT automatically denote some kind of deficiency on the part of the player. Nor does it indicate any form of elitism. It is purely a personal choice and frankly, it's not your job to lecture a group of total strangers on anything. We don't know you from Adam.

Cheers, Terry

Slow-paced to a fault, like the quoted review claims the game in question to be though? That is, if you read the entire paragraph instead of what is quoted in JA+'s article? Thought so. There are these ballsy claims made in the article - that there must be people involved who don't know jack nor do they have any interest in the games reviewed, period. And to "prove" it, like the article claims to do, all it takes is a couple of lines ripped from their context so that it tightly fits in what it desires to prove, and presto, Sherlock. That just plain doesn't work. And that's really everything the paragraph you made out to be condescending and lecturing was supposed to be about. I quoted you, yes, but for sarcasm's sake - your line just fitted in perfectly to emphasize the point I was trying to make. Really couldn't help it.
