I have a small mini-laptop that doesn't have a CD drive built in (must drag around an external CD drive)

I'm looking for some suggestions for games that do not need the cd's.

Is the correct term "complete install" ?
(so that the cd's are not needed to play the games)

Thanks
SAM

Sorry, last sentence didn't come out like I intended.

So after you install the game, no CD is needed to play.

Obviously, any game you buy as a download won't need a CD in, but that only works if you have a fast internet connection to that laptop. Still, if you do, you might consider buying adventures from BigFishGames, if you buy a lot of them you can get them really cheap.

This is what I do too or I'd go mad with cd changing with all the games I have installed at the same time, but strictly speaking, it is not legal. Most EULA forbid it, and we agree we won't do it when we impatiently click "i accept the terms and conditions" button to get to the game we just bought.

Maybe not legal, but I don't feel any moral obligation to go through with their protection methods. I mean I did pay for the game, and I will not copy it. So I don't see the problem.

We aren't free to break laws we don't see the point of, or that inconvenience us. Only in this case we are, so most of us do... At any rate, it is only right to inform those that believe it is legal that it is not so, so they can make informed decisions.

Same here. I'm going through this right now with a $200 program. My original hard drive took a dive so I have a new one and had to reinstall everything.  Well, turn's out the CD key for this one is on some CD case "somewhere" in this place.  Considering I have a about a thousand games/programs (all store bought) on CDs with cases that are scattered in drawers, closets and boxes it means I have some serious searching to do. This is the curse of installing things and laying the CD in my desk drawer and not putting it back in it's case.  Every other high end utility program I have has a label not just on the CD case, but on the reference manual as well - but not this one!  >

In Canada copyright law explicitly allows a person to make a copy of media for personal use (ie. backup purposes), so often using cracked executables is the only way for a "copy" to be a useful backup.  Potentially the stipulations of copyright law void relevant parts of software license agreements, but I'm not aware of this ever having been tested in court.

I wouldn't bother trying, you wouldn't win.
The way I see it I won't lose sleep over it, so why worry. Most devs understand that this goes on, but they *must* include the protection to avoid piracy. Not that it helps any.

Steam is a good middle ground. No cds needed. Of course it's all up to how you feel about online authentication.

Dangerous Dave said "Why dont you just get a no CD patch"

Sorry if this sounds silly, but where do you get a no CD patch?
Is it something you must download?
Will this convert my existing games into no CD games?

Thanks

Neither would I, believe me!

It's still an interesting question, though.

I would think a bigger problem would be whether whatever the laptop uses for a video card will support the game.
You can always ask Google for nocd cracks, or use emulation programs like Alcohol or Daemon-Tools.

I have been doing this for years. In fact, I've installed AGs on virtually every conceivable size of mini-laptop PC starting when they first started coming out in the latter 1990s (eg. the Toshiba Libretto). BTW: Which mini-laptop do you have?

This is likely going to be a subject of an article of mine in Adventure Lantern sometime this year so I'm not going to go into much detail. In brief the options are:

1) Finding programs that allow a complete install without a CD in the drive. There are a few of these- most recently The Lost Crown. The best overall example of this is Alida which doesn't even tie itself to a Registry entry. I adore developers who allow this.

2) NoCD patches. This is a great solution where a full install is allowed but a CD is required to be in the drive. A fair number of AG developers went this latter route.

3) Virtual Image programs. This is my main solution. A program such as Virtual CD will make an image of the cds/dvds which in most cases will subsitute for the physicial CD. I have been using these, likewise, since the latter 1990s.

Using these methods, there is almost no AG that can't be run without CDs in the drive.

Here is my view on the legal issues. I buy every single AG I have ever acquired. I will not cheat on developers on this point. They deserve fair compensation for their product. End of story. But once I've purchased that copy, I will use it in any way I see fit to play it in any way I see fit. I submit that legally, although you have to click that you accept the User License Agreement to continue with the program, that doesn't not necessarily make de facto a totally binding contract because I have purchased the program and now would not be able to use it if I didn't agree to the User License Agreement: IMO, that is not a level playing field that is usually required in a binding contract. No one can really know how much of an User License Agreement will be enforceable unless it is tested in court, but my reading of the major court cases testing this issue (ie. Fair Use) is that if one is using the program for their own use and does not make copies available to anyone else either directly or indirectly (such as putting it in a directory accessible to people on peer-to-peer networks) then based on Fair Use no court would find against my using NoCD patches or virtual image programs.

The future ain't what it used to be!

Now I really want Alida.  But I can't afford it!

Unfortunately, this isn't Europe, but since I'm going out this weekend for some shopping anyway, maybe I'll have a quick look for it.

They've got Alida for $19.98 at cdaccess.com. I'm pretty sure they ship to Canada.

Apparently not anymore (ie. they are sold out).  Thank anyway, though.

Are you sure? If I go there and type in Alida in the Search box, it shows that they have 38 copies!

Maybe $0.78 is more to your liking Ebay.ca - Alida
