Wait wait...I missed something due to my skimming - Zork was added to the ScummVM engine? As in RTZ? Thats very cool.

However I *have* gotten it to work in dosbox easily. The install actually worked fine. If you need help, ask.
I've gotten 95% of my games all working in dosbox, usually with minimal effort. If theres a problem 9 times out of 10 the folks on the official forum have it solved and you just need to do a search.

For RTZ specifically I don't recall doing anything out of the ordinary. Just install on full, maybe make an image of the CD so you don't need to keep inserting it, mount the image/cd, set cycles and core to 'auto' and run it.

Yep - that or download one of the CVS builds (I've managed to replay several games prior to official support).  ScummVM works - but, its support isn't nearly as robust as DOSBox.

Even the folks at Microsoft VPC have conceded, if you want to play DOS games use DOSBox.

What?

The dosbox guys needed to market the spped boost - thats the thing. In one specific version dosbox went about 2-3x faster than normal and can now run very heavy games on even modest CPUs. Unfortunately most people already formed an opinion before trying it again.

Sure it's not intuitive to setup, but a frontend like DBGL and anyone can do it.

Indeed.  The engine was added to the trunk....
/me checks his logs.
... one month and eight days ago.  Apparently RtZ's engine is simplistic, so progress has actually been quite swift.

Speaking of front-ends (sort of), I've long been seeking a useful not-too-ugly graphical menu for DOS: rather than use a front-end, I run DOSBox wherein a menu launches.  It feels more authentic that way.

I don't suppose anyone would have any suggestions?

You can't kill someone in a studio.

DBGL and D-Fend are both good (although D-Fend was replaced by D-Fend Reloaded...)

D-Fend Reloaded has the added advantage of screen shot thumbnails, but both offer additional information in their catalogs (Release date, Publisher, Developer etc...)

What?
