SHADOW OF DESTINY

I’ve just completed the game. It sounds like a shoot-em-up but it's a good ol' point-n-click.

This is an oldie, released by Konami in 2002. I believe it was first issued as a Playstation game then ported over for the PC. It was released as "Shadow of Memories" in the UK. Though it was coded in the win98 era, it played without fault under XP (the makers reject support under XP, but it ain’t required). It comes on 1 cd-rom.

The action takes place in a town Germany. Eike (pronounced “Ike”) is your avatar and he is in trouble. The first scene shows him being stabbed in the back. He comes round in a netherworld with a strange character (Homunculus) who gives him a time travel digipad and advises getting to the root of the problem. From then on it’s travelling back and forth and between eras attempting to avoid premature death. It was intriguing to see the same town in 4 different eras and also see the inhabitants throughout the ages. A lot of detail has been put in and it all adds to the experience.

The graphics are very impressive, particularly character movement. Control uses both mouse and keys (basically steer with mouse and move with arrow keys). Takes only a short while to get used to. There are several places to visit in the town, not all need be visited to solve each puzzle. The game is in 8 chapters, plus a prologue and an epilogue with a different fate to be avoided in each.

Background music blends and incidental sounds are well done. Acting was fine, voiceovers well done. Speech is American.

The plot is involved. There are 5 (yes, five!) different endings which impinge on the lives of the game characters. Once all five endings have been achieved this allows a sixth ending to be accessed. I played through and achieved 2 endings then reverted to a walkthrough for the others.

Puzzles are inventory based, with the obvious conundrum of which era to find the right object. Nothing tremendously brain stretching and several clues are given within game. Pixel hunting is absent, all useful objects are clearly flagged as are enterable buildings.

There is some replay value too, as there is a scoring system. However, once I had seen the sights, and achieved the endings I had no interest in achieving a 100% score in all chapters. Each chapter is timed (for scoring purposes) and total time is roughly 12 hours, but to understand and complete each chapter you will require more than one attempt so in reality there is probably 20 plus hours gaming in there. You do “die”, but this part of the game and you are returned to try again.

So, summing up. A great game, well produced. I recommend this to all. An intersting and easy traditional point-n-click adventure. There are no action sequences or mini-games. There are lots of cut-scenes, all were well done. Well worth looking out for. (mine came from eBay – new copy).

UKPETD-

I'm hoping that you can help me out. I am right into SoD, first time but I can't grab the rope in Chapter 7.
I got the new rope from the 19th cent., hooked it up the night before but when I get up on the roof with 9 seconds to go,
I can't figure out what control to use to grab the rope. No rope in inventory and one walkthrough said to press X. I pressed x on the
keyboard - nothing. Right or left click mouse - nothing. Press enter - nothing.
  What's the secret word?
                                          Thanks,

Deleted Userkr310, as this game is a console port, my guess is that the walkthrough you read was actually a PS2 wthru, and the x referred to the x-button (enter or action button) on the PS2.  I had only played part of the game and can't recall the part you are stuck with, but I always play my ported console games with a controller, as these games were originally designed for controller controls, anyway.
If you don't have a controller, I would suggest you try and find a walkthru written specifically for the PC version.
JA+ , GameBoomers and Quandary are good bets for walkthroughs.  You might also try gamefaqs.com, but their walktroughs are usually mostly console-orientated.

Thanks for the reply Traveller.
I will be looking for the PC walkthru. I have seen some other walkthrus but they just say "Grab the rope" with no info on how.

Deleted UserHope you resolve your problem, kr310. I will keep an eye out for a solution too, and post it if I find one, so you could maybe check this thread again in a few days time, just in case. Actually, you should have posted your question in the "hints and tips" forum. More people who could help you will see it there. People don't really read this 'review' forum. Why don't you just copy and paste your Q. to that section?  Good luck, anyhow.

When you have your 9 seconds to go at the top of the tower, press left arrow to go to the rope which you put in place the night before. The game automatically plays a cut scene (either you got the old rope and death follows or you got the new rope and you survive).

All the walkthroughs I found are PS2 based and mention press X. It's not required in the PC version. Hope you enjoy the game.

ukpetd,
Many thanks for the help. Moving left, meaning all the way to the other side of the tower.
I hadn't figured on that. I must have played thru that chapter 20 times.
I ended up with the D ending. I'm thinking I'll go back and try to save Eckart's wife.
                        Thanks again,
