Here I am watching one of my favourite British sit-coms Men Behaving Badly, when I think to myself  "
ang it, I'm gonna' go online now and order myself the series on DVD!"

But, after searching for about a half hour I couldn't find anyone that sold the series in the USA. So fine I thought, "I'll just order it from the UK and pay a higher shipping price," at least I'd have the series. Then I remembered the damn DVD region crapola...I wouldn't be able to play them on my DVD player because they're from the European region.

What a stupid, dumb-ass system! B***ards!!! >

I agree. On my first DVD, I experienced this problem too, but somebody tipped me that the regional codings could be de-coded, the makers of DVD players don't manufacture different types of players to suit the different regions, but make one for all, and code them differently. So I searched the internet and found places that listed the ways to accomplish that, usually by pressing certain codes on the remote. Sometimes you can even get this information from the sales clerks in the store too, they are more eager to sell than to keep the movie conglomorates happy. Unfortunately I don't have the links anymore, and I have since bought a DVD-player without regional reading installed, which are now common in Europe. Oops, it's perhaps "unethical" of me to suggest this?
Sorry...

I don't think it's unethical a least bit, if you would tell how to mod-chip a playstation - that would be unethical.

The reason they invented "regions" is that they want to control the movie sales in different regions >
. This means that you shouldn't be able to import a movie before it is released or buy it cheaper imported, but there should be everyones right to consume by their own needs.

I think the key thing Friday mentioned is "buy it cheaper." That is DEFINITELY the only reason movie makers put in something like that. They want to be able to gouge you, no matter where you live! By putting in coding, they make the seller's competion area smaller, hence less competition, higher prices, more profit for the movie maker. They just want to prevent, as much as possible, the consumers ability to "get a deal".

I'll say it again...B***ards!!! >

I agree, I also hate it that Eropeans get less extra marerial then Americans and that DVD's actually is cheaper to produce then video cassettes, and yet we pay more for them. >

They are if you are looking hard enough. Apex makes some I believe. For computer DVD-ROMs (my case) it's usually possible to get "unofficial" firmware which allows playing of all regions.

On a semi-related note, from what I hear there is one type of movies that tends not to use region coding at all: porn. I have just one hentai DVD myself but it is also regionless. At least someone treats their customers fairly

I forgot my sig.
