I bought the adventure game collection volume 1 thing yesterday and all the games run, save Dead Reefs. Every time I start it up, the screen turns a weird tan color and it freezes for a minute. Then it just goes weird, it's hard to explain. Things start flashing, and I really suck at explaining the problem.... If anyone could help it would be much appreciated.

XP ot Vista?  Does your PC meet the minimum system requiements?

Tac lists a number of suggestions for video issues:

The screen turns black when attempting to play my game

What?

Same problem here, with Dead Reefs from the Adventure Pack Collection, except I get grey instead of tan.
And it sticks to that, the game doesn't even launch, I don't hear anything, see anything, etc.

I have XP, with an AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 1gig of RAM, ATI Radeon X1600 with latest drivers and latest DirectX.

I also did everything found in the Support pages (clean-boot, compatibility mode, decrease acceleration, etc.). To no avail.

Please help.

I have the same problem. The game won't run. Just goes to a blank screen. I loaded it on my XP machine and when that didn't work, tried my Vista laptop. Same results on both machines.

Is that a mobility X1600 or an add on card?  I had an issue with the game as well, with a 7600GT IGP, but a reinstall (of the game) resolved it.

What?

No laptop here. It's a desktop computer, so no Mobility Radeon.

And 4 reinstalls already haven't helped yet.

If you're runniung the ATI 8.3 drivers, try rolling them back to version 7 (newer isn't always better).

Edit -

Version 7.7 is supposed to be fairly stable, give it a shot.

What?

Hi-
I just starting playing Dead Reefs over the weekend. I got a black screen, and hit I  "space bar".

The game started right up.

The spacebar makes the game skip any cutscene, so maybe your computer was hung up on the initial cutscene (like mine did).

Another thing I figured out is that my 4-year-old Windows XP computer can't run the game with the full gee-whiz graphics. My old ATI Radeon 9200 used to be state of the art, but now it can barely keep up. So here's what I did: I went into the game folder and found the icon for "laucher.exe". Clicking on that gives you a little screen to downsize your graphics to 800x600. Started the game up again, and my old computer runs Dead Reefs just fine with no hang-ups.

I hope this helps!

Holy mother of....! Who thought the space bar would save the day? :-)

That worked on me too. Many, many thanks for this trick.

The Adventure Company is really clueless on this one. They made me try a lot of things, to no avail. I even sent them a log file generated by the game where it was clear that the culprits were the videos/cutscenes to be run on game launch. I reckon those vids are company credits and such, nothing game-related.

For the record, I can run the game on 1280x1024 just fine. Resolution was not the problem.

Thanks again!

Glad to hear it!

Another thing I discovered is the option in Settings or Launcher.exe, you can uncheck the box for "bloom". I don't know exactly what that is, but I find my game running better without the Bloom.

I think I took out the extra shading and shadows, but it helps my game run better/faster without it.

Here's another suggestion that The Adventure Company doesn't give us - in the very first scene when you get control of the game, hit the LEFT SHIFT button. This is a toggle that will make the guy walk instead of run. He's much easier to control walking rather than running.

You can always change that later once you have a little practice moving around.

I hope this helps!

That's actually a nice find - I recall having an issue as well (Vista IIRC), but never recalled just what I did to get around it.

I thought the Shift key was mentioned somewhere (because I used it as well) - but it had a nasty habit of turning itself off when the scene changed.

What?

I had this same problem. Nothing I tried would work. Then for grins and giggles I downloaded/installed/ran the demo for this game (easily found with a google search). And now the game starts up just as it should! Even after uninstalling the demo. I think there are some video codecs that don't get loaded from the install that the demo version fixes. I don't know. Give it a try.

I tried that and it works for me too.  Much better than having to start in safe mode.  Thanks for the tip!

I still have to adjust the native resolution on my screen whenever I want to play, though since I run at a higher resolution than the game offers.  This game has some serious graphical programming shortcomings.  Sigh.

I finally got the videos to play in Dead Reefs. I had to download a whole package of .avi codecs, and .ogg codecs. Once I did that, I could see all the videos I had missed. I still have to hit Enter a few times to get the game started, but I can live with that. An easy test to see if you have the right codecs already on your computer, is to use Windows Explorer to find the Dead Reefs/resources/video folder, and double-click any .avi or .ogg file. If your media player can play it, then this is not your problem. Mine could not, which is why I hunted down the new codecs. Just my two cents worth in case it helps someone else.

I am having a huge problem with this game.  I bought it before it came in the adventure pack.  I installed it several times, and it always freezes when I am in grave yard.  I have tried every trick that the AC sites technical supoport page suggested.  I email the company's techinal support and have never recieved a response.  I am just curious how to get to stop freezing, so I can actually play the game.

I know its not the computer, because it plays all other games from the AC, and even runs Crisis, yeah thats right Crisis the system killer.  So if anyone can help please let me know.

HERE IS THE SOLUTION!! Regardless of the version of dead reefs you have installed (stand alone or adventure pack) is you are having video playback problems. Simply download and install the DEMO to the same file you have the full version installed. Run the demo, if you see video your problem should be resolved. Exit and play the full version and enjoy ALL the content you were missing.

I'll try the demo thing but my problem is slightly different. The install wizard takes ages to load up (to the point that I thought it wasn't responding).
Once I finally install the game I can't even start it at all. When I click on the shortcut I immediately get a Windows error message. I don't even hear the disk starting up.

ETA I downloaded the demo and installed it but it doesn't launch either. I get a message telling me Dead Reefs has stopped working.

If I were you, I'd be glad, Dead Reefs is a horrible game, and when I came upon a bug and couldn't progress any further, I was glad.

A really disappointing game
