In some AG's the main character can occasionally die. Yes, die!. He/she can die in several ways: sometimes you have the option to immediately restore the game, exactly to the point where you "left" (that's really useful if you don't save too often). This way of dying, according to some ppl, is helpful to make a game really adrenaline inducing. But there are also those games where you can be walking around for a long time and suddenly, after a little false step, you're dead.  On the other hand, you have games where no matter what you do, you are absolutelly "immortal"so to speak...So - which do you like the best: games where the character can actually die (and which would be the "best way to die"
or those where there's no manner to die?

on the whole: not to die. but i commend the way GK3 handled death. my heart stoped everytime i.... well i wont spoil for anyone who hast played it- but it was to do with some weighing scales.
Its boring, there isn't any action at all. You walk around picking up things and using them with other items. You walk around and use the item on something. Walking around and talking to people is really lame, what about some shooting or something~APuddleduck&&

No problem with the dying, but it should automatically save/return to a point shortly before the mistake was made (without giving a clue as to WHAT mistake, of course).

Same as above. Had enough dying after playing Beasley's deathtrap 1 and 2.

Yes! That was a wonderful (???) way to die!!!  :

And what about GK2's cave in the woods? ....or just that walking around the woods looking for the.... (well, I won't spoil this part either
)

but it was to do with some weighing scales.

 Yeah...that puzzle was really challenging.  Anyway, :-X

There's something I still don't get (and this is the reason why I post this topic)...Why games like Syberia or TLJ, where you can not die -at least as far as I can remember- are so popular?  ??? Beyond their obvious virtues, of course.  Seems most of gamers still prefer the "dying characters"... :

That's funny you asked this - I just fired up Rex Nebular yesterday (after Rael's trivia question) - and one of the things I noticed was that after I died, the game was immediately restarted to a point just prior...

I thought it was a nice way to handle it -

What?

Die I say. Especially if it's funny, like it was in many old Sierra games.

Remember the place in MI1 where Guybrush "died", got the Sierra-ish Restore/Restart/Quit message box... and then did not die after all?

I forgot my sig.

Yes Inland, I loved that feature in Rex Nebular - certainly the best way to do it!

To me, the best dyings were in the Space Quest series

Yeah

I loved the scenes where pirates insulted each ohter...like
"-Nobody has ever drawn blood from me and nobody ever will.
-You run that fast?"

(I still laugh when I remember that
)

Hey, but that had nothing to do with the topic...Sorry! :

Go on, please...

It suits some games fine. And it helps a lot in horror games like I have no mouth.. Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil (Better write Parasite Eve here too or someone might will say something about it).

Say, how about "
arkseed" (especially 2), where you could be walking around for a looong time without knowing you have reached a dead end...OR, withouth any warning, Mike gets killed, and you don't even know what went wrong? (that stupid huge "baby" in the alien/dark world... >
)

Death in adventure games goes way back.
oes anyone else remember "It is really dark.  You have been eaten by a grue!"
My only problem with getting killed in a game is when the save system is limited and it forces me to replay tedious actions scenes over and over and over and over...

Remember Omikron - where you would die in order to move into the body of a new character???  Quite a concept except that I grew very attached to one character and hated to have to trade her in!

I went through the same remorse in Omikron.

We can be heroes, just for one day.

this has to be one of the funniest things i've seen in an adventure!!!!!
i laughed my as[/black]s off!!!

dying? yes in action games or rpgs, but in advs generally no, especially in those stupid you-steped-on-the-wrong-pixel sierra ways

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

I don't mind being able to die in AG's, as long as the reason for my death was halfway logical and avoidable, and as long as the game restores me to a point just before my death, and not to where I last saved.  I'm not very responsible about saving every three steps, and even if a game is super fun I don't want to replay an hours worth because I died and forgot to save.

In the Zork games and in older Sierra games like Laura Bow you got killed constantly.  I didn't have much problem with that partly because you could restore, but also because they gave you some really horrible pun about your death.
"Feeling a little FLAT!?" Har!)

So, to sum up, my rules about death in AG's:
1. Make it halfway logical, or failing that, halfway entertaining
2. Let me restore to just before I died, please.
3. I like dorky puns... I don't know, maybe I'm alone on this one.

Get those bases covered and I'm perfectly fine with in-game death.

Almost as good as LSL1 where you got dumped into Sierra, only to be reassembled as a brand new Larry!

What?

(I didn't say in which game, so it wasn't a spoiler

I too loath tedious action scenes in AGs that must be replayed ad nauseum until I finally get it right.

I don't mind getting killed in a humorous way or if there is an interesting cut scene and then I am plonked right back into the game just before my fatal mistake.

Still adventuring after all these years!

Patiently awaiting The Last Crown: Haunting of Hallowed Isle, and Bracken Tor...

... and Asylum if it's not tooooo scary...
