A game I would highly recomend is Obsidian from Rocket Science Games. It's considered a Myst clone but it’s much more. Anyone that claims to be an adventure game player should play Obsidian. It may not be so easy but the experience is worth the effort.
I’d also place a vote for Amber if you can find a way to run it. It’s a really good game. It was the first adventure game I played and from then on I was hooked on 1st person adventure games.
I agree on both accounts here. Obsidian was beautifully made and certainly shouldn't be missed by anyone who loves puzzles. It was, if I recall correctly, Rocket Science Games' second to last product before they closed. Their final game was The Space Bar, which I'd also recommend, but only if you like dialog and time limits.
Amber is unlike Obsidian in that it's pretty nonlinear. Amber may be a little short, but it's still a masterpiece.

You never wander around wondering what you need to do next, you certainly never get lost, and you don't have several million items in your inventory at any point.
Plus, I was just trying to think of GOOD first person adventures other than the ones already mentioned.

You certainly never get lost in Rhem...?? You've got to be joking!
I liked Rhem, but I got lost a lot. A lot. It's one big maze. Rhem 2 was not so hard in that regard.
Terramax, I highly recommend Zork Grand Inquisitor, it's really great fun, even if you get to carry around a few items. And The Last Express. Wonderful, wonderful game. And the one and only Neverhood. Which nobody mentioned.

I don't recall getting lost much at all, and I thought it was because I was screwing up. Weird. The world is HUGE, so I can imagine getting "lost," but I think the exploration aspect was still on the easy side.

Status : Online | I would definately recommend Morpheus. It s the game that made me stuck with this genre..Its not easy i have to say but since this topic has turned to a "first person game" convo i thought my recommendation would stand. Its simply magic, and although its kinda old the graphics are amazing. You make a journey through some people's dreams and every dream is unique full of pictures and stories that could stand as separate games. When i finished this game i felt like i played 4 games all in one.It was a great experience with challenging riddles and characters. My all time favorite, what can i say!

morpheus is indeed a great game. Shortish, but great.
pilgrim is another nice little game.
By the way, Neverhood (a classic in its genre) is available as a free download (along with a multitude of other games) at ---. Be sure to read up first on how to use files with (amongst others) an ISO extension

Unless the copyright holder has explicitly released the software into the public domain, it's a little hard to tell how "abandoned" the software really is. In the US, there's no mention of "abandonware" in our copyright laws, so the whole thing toes the line of legality.

We are?? Speak for yourself. And the Neverhood is not abandonware.
Not a mod in sight. Strange.

I'm not wanting to play games just for puzzles. I don't like arbetrary puzzle games, so Rhem is pretty much my ultimate nemesis. I wouldn't mind if these games looked great or at least had 360 pan, but if a 1st person doesn't have 360 panning, it's pretty much gonna getter wiped off of my radar. I severely dislike static pictures. I might as well play a crossword and look at a postcard every so often if that's the case.
I don't know if I said this before, but I would be very interested in the later Zork games if it weren't for the fact that they're so temperamental with windows XP. I couldn't find my way around that zork library site very well, but if there are programs, or easy steps to get them working using dosbox, I'll try them out.

Have you tried Inferno's solutions for both games? The disc-swapping is a problem for Zork GF (freezing!) when played on XP, but she has a way around that.

I don't know what zork library site you're talking about, but Zork Grand Inquisitor is win95, not DOS.
Another great site with lots of good info on adventure games is:

@JanPeter: When you want to attract a mod's attention it's preferable that you send the mod a PM

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.
