Thanks Traveller! I'll do that. I've always been a fan of RPGs, though I don't have the time I used to to play them unfortunately. They can be demanding I've been fighting the urge all morning to buy Witcher over on Steam for $5 (#$%! you Steam with your sweet, sweet deals!). It's not much money, but I know if I get it, I can kiss another 50+ hours goodbye

Stormseye, just buy it! You'll never regret it, -come on. $5 is not a lot of cash - it's a steal for this wonderful, wonderful game. [smiley=cool.gif] ...and then you have the game, for whenever you have time. Don't you have a bit of vacation at the moment? I played through Witcher in a bit more than 2 weeks just after it was released - it was in my December hols and I had an absolute ball!
..but another member here, Masher, is a very busy person who doesn't have much time for gaming, and he played Witcher small bit by bit, and took almost a year to complete it, and he loves the game to bits as well.
So, c'mon...- and then come join us in a Witcher thread which I'll dig out for you - in fact we have about 3 or 4 Witcher threads.

I still haven't finished the game btw. I'd managed to get out of the city and defeat Spoiler Alertthe Queen with a great move that seemed to kill her without me actually doing anything when my old laptop died on me. It won't start. At all. I keep trying every few weeks or so to see if I can retrieve my old save files.
By the way just got hold of a cheap copy of Jack Keane. Any good?
After playing Culpa Innata obsessively for about a week I am now lagging.
Currently playing: Dragon Age Origins, Dishonored, The Witcher, Fallout 3, Deponia

Big gaming world (lots of places to explore). There were complaints about the voice acting but that sort of thing doesn't bother me. It is full 3D but it looks very nice. I played it on both Win XP and Win 7 w/o problems. There is some rearal (?...as opposed to frontal) nudity but nothing shocking.
In fact, I've run out of games to play so I think I'll give this one another go (at least until some new stuff comes out).
EDIT: Oops, maybe I didn't play it on Win 7. I just got it loaded but can't get it to run now. Copy protection issue I think. But it worked fine on Win XP.
I don't buy download-only games. Never have, never will........Mike

I do a lot of work from my home office, and while it only takes a moderate amount of willpower not to buy it during the sale, it takes much more to look at it ever day sitting in my Steam library and not play it while I should be working. I'm a weak, weak man. I say this after spending four hours with Oblivion today and doing nothing productive, and now feeling guilty about it, but wondering if I can get the guy in the basement to become visible without stealing the guild leader's book....

Heh, I also work mostly from home, which is why I get to pop in here at all hours - sometimes I work late into the night. Although I tend to take frequent breaks, sadly (or good, I suppose) I can't bring myself to game if I have a project to finish. (I know time runs away when you're gaming).
My last project has been a volunteer job with no payment, that took a bit longer than expected, with unexpected twists and turns... Finally checking it for errors today, and hope I'll see the last of it by tonite so that I can still get a bit of gaming squashed into my vacation...
The guy in the basement become visible? I'm trying to figure out which quest you mean. :-? I presume a mage's guild quest?
Anyway - if one has so little time to game, surely you should be playing that which you enjoy. A note about Witcher. Unlike Oblivion, it is relatively linear with a definite story, so except for chapter 2 which is quite complex, it is quite easy to put it down for days or even weeks at a time without becoming confused about where you were last. Just saying. [smiley=angel.gif] Ok, I promise I shall desist from this moment on..
Merry Xmas everybody!

.
What a pity, Maum. Why don't you treat yourself for Xmas and take it in to a technician - or will that work out too expensively? It might just be the battery/power supply, you know.

Last time I had it fixed (it was still under warranty) the memory was wiped. My only hope is that it will start out of the blue, which has actually happened in the past.

He's walking around in the basement of the guild. I'm pretty sure I know the solution, but my skills aren't high enough to pull it off. I've been more or less neglecting the magic side and just hitting with heavy things.

Yup yup, thank ya. That's what I was figuring, but since I've gotten this quest, I haven't found a dispel scroll, and my mysticism isn't high enough... Not a big deal. I'll let it sit till I'm ready.

Is there a reason you don't want to steal the book? That's what I've done every time... I guess it is the easy way out, but.. there are many ways to kill a cat. I think the alternative is to use dispel, so if for some reason you don't want to steal the book, you can always go on with the myriads of other quests until you find a scroll, a likely place is Mystic Emporium in the Capital city.
You could, of course, always stand between Volanaro and J'skar just after 8PM when Volanaro casts the spell on J'Skar every day. If you're lucky, the effect goes onto you. Hey, we should actually take this to the Oblivion thread...

[smiley=hi_five.gif] [smiley=cool.gif] ..and I don't have Alternativa, but I also still need to play Aura, Scorpio Ritual and BS1, and not sure but I might have Samorost 2 as well. First I want to play Alter Ego, though.

Heheh, that's the problem! But I'm sure you're right. I'm looking forward to giving it a go. Between the glowing praises both here and on the Steam forums, I'm sure it'll be a blast!

Be warned that the game is a bit of a slow starter, and the controls might feel a bit awkward at first. It is one of those games that only gets better and better, the further it that you come.

...and yes, I was going to mention getting used to the combat system. I was actually waiting for those typical initial complaints about it that one gets from new players, but over on the other games section.
Hang on, I'll go and ressurrect one or start a new one...

Thanks Traveller. I'll check this out after I have a chance to experience it for myself. I'm not too worried about it. Even if I don't like it, hey, five bucks, right? I'm not too critical. I generally enjoy games as long as they have a good story and halfway decent mechanics.

Status : Offline | I'm chipping away at The Void -- and have been doing so, on-and-off, for over a year. I've died so many times I've lost count. And due to the resource-management aspect of the game, most deaths have obliged me to start completely over.
I used to think that The Void is the sort of game that folks would either love or hate. Based on my own experience, however, I've revised my opinion. It's possible to love and hate it.
The game is bizarre. It's beautiful. It's frightening. It's awe-inspiring. It's grotesque. I've never played anything quite like it. I love these aspects.
It's off-the-scale difficult. It's ridiculously frustrating. It leaves some things unexplained and tells you lies about others, which can leave you not knowing WTF to do. It can make you feel really dumb. I hate these aspects.
I've never put this much effort into getting through a game. I've searched high and low for pointers, strategies, tips and yes, even cheats. These things have only enabled me to get a little further in the game before dying.
As far as I'm concerned, one doesn't play The Void so much as make it an occupation.
For anyone familiar with the game, I've gotten as far as The Pangolin in my current playthrough. But haven't killed it yet because I don't have proper glyphs for doing so. Maybe I got there too early or something. There's no way to tell for sure.
I believe the reason I can't seem to walk completely away from The Void is its surreal, outlandish weirdness. I'm a sucker for that kind of thing. [smiley=cheesy.gif]
I've read more than a few reviews that have said the game is quite innovative, original and imaginative. I agree. But they've also said that they wouldn't exactly call it fun. I agree.
I also suspect that those who have written glowing reviews and not mentioned any negatives haven't played the whole game. I just don't see how they could have.
I'm curious about something. Is there anyone here who's actually made it to the end of The Void?

Of course my main devise for playing adventure games is a Nintendo Dsi XL. But then again, there was a time I played my adventure games on a Commodore 128 and paid $69.95 for them too.
Here's my backlog of games to play in 2011 (as in bought in a Gamestop used game sale and waiting to be played):
999
Alice in Wonderland
Deadly Intent
Crimelab
Titanic
Dream Chronicles
Bachelor
Adventure games coming in 2011 I'm gunna buy:
Runaway 1, 2, 3
Secret Files 2
Prof Layton 3, 4
A New Beginning
The Whispered Word
CSI Unsolved Cases
Tree of Life
Shuttered Island
Phoenix Wright 5, 6
The Open Window
AND MY ADVENTURE GAME FOR 2010 is - Again - Eye of Providence.
I have a feeling that 999 will win out in 2011 - just a feeling however.
Oh and the 3DS comes out this year - could be interesting...

I agree with you that the resource management aspect can be tedious and frustrating, but I also find that there is more good than bad in that game. It is an experience, if nothing else.
And it is one of those games that you need to be in the right mood to play. I'm still going through my second attempted playthrough, and while progress is slow, it is there.
