So, another year of adventure gaming winds down. What did you play this year? Tell us all about it, the good, the bad, and everything else in between.

My list:

Remedy

An OK game. Cute, but rather shortish. Worth playing for the unique watercolor-like graphics.

Sam & Max Season 1 (Episodes 2-6), Sam & Max Season 2 (Episode 1)

I think I've finally come to terms with the fact that I'm not going to get the full length, full fledged Sam & Max game I want, but will have to settle what works out to be more of an interactive cartoon. But it's still incredibly funny, very enjoyable nonetheless. Looking forward to how Season 2 will develop!

Nancy Drew: Stay Tuned For Danger

Slightly better than the first game, but still pretty mediocre. It also continues my big pet peeve of all those goofy notes around the game.

Déjà Vu

Feeling nostalgic, I replayed the NES version. It was fun, and brought back some great memories. But something stood out to me this time that I missed the first time (being new to adventure games then). It seems very forgiving for a game of the era. Spoiler AlertThe game won't let you throw away vital evidence in the sewers, for example. And the game will give you a nudge at times if you haven't seen everything in a room. I wonder now if they simplified the NES version? I should track down the PC version and see how it compares.

Nacah

I was looking forward to this, and turned out to be very disappointed. My biggest problem was how easy it was to get stuck in the game. You can't return to areas you've left, meaning you can easily leave items behind you'll need for the best ending. You can also use items incorrectly, and not be able to recover them to try a puzzle again.

Safecracker (2006)

A very pleasant puzzle romp. Puzzles could have perhaps been a bit more challenging for my taste. But there was enough variety to keep things interesting, and it's my favorite setting, the big old house stuffed with puzzles.

Gast: The Greatest Little Ghost

It's a children's game, but surprisingly good. Almost every puzzle has multiple solutions, a nice touch. A lot of adventure gamers will be put off by the arcade end game, though.

Amber

This was the best "pure" adventure game I've played this year. A little short and easy, but nicely designed anyway. The different eras were each unique and interesting, and I always I like it when games give you gadgets to help you solve puzzles. Highly recommended.

Runaway 2

A mixed bag. I love the graphics and had fun with the way over the top story. But the English translation was lousy at best and the humor wasn't very humorous. When was the last time we've had a truly funny commerical adventure game, come to think of it? (Not counting the new Sam and Max games, I mean)

3 In Three

I'd been stuck on this game twice before, but desperate for a Cliff Johnson puzzle fix, I came back to it again. The third time was, appropriately enough, the charm, because I broke through the puzzles that had stymied me and was able to finish the game. Another superb Cliff Johnson game, although I think I like The Fool's Errand a bit better, if only because of the fantasy setting.

System’s Twilight

This might be the hardest puzzle game I've played, at least in certain spots. It definitely had some of the most unique puzzles I've ever seen. Absolutely loved the word mazes -- a brilliant concept. One thing that kind of bugged was the end game. I solved it, but by accident. I'm still not completely sure what I did, as information about the ending is one of the biggest secrets ever. There's practically a conspiracy not to talk about it, as I found out when I tried to look up information about the endgame after I finished it.

Spoiler AlertApparently exiting the game while in the middle of the last puzzle is supposed to symbolize a sort of reboot, and a new start for the System?

.

Sam & Max: Season One and Scratches are the only recent AGs I bought and finished this year. However, I'm about halfway through Culpa Innata and have several others still sitting here in the shrink wrap along with numerous unplayed RPGs, quite a few action titles and a couple of strategy games for the PC. The problem is finding the time to fully focus on games for typically long sessions.

Cheers,  Terry

Oh boy...

Adventure Games
The Sacred Rings - Enjoyable but it wasn't Aura II.
Next Life - Best AG I've played this year.
Operation Wintersun - Had potential, then fell apart. I suspect a looming deadline ruined this one.
Nancy Drew:White Wolf - a fun and LONG Nancy Drew game.
Darkness Within - Just started it. Got it as a surprise Christmas present. (yeah, I know, it's not Christmas yet but the note said OPEN NOW, so who am I to argue?)

Other Genres
Blitzkrieg - Addictive WWII RTS
FreeLancer - Addictive 1st person spaceship shooter/ sorta RPG game.
Panzer Claws - Another WWII RTS
Lance Bode Downhill Skiing - The name says it all.
Mortyr II - WWII FPS. Seemed weak at first, but then it just kept getting better.
Marine Heavy Gunner - Actually started this awhile back, but never finished it because of one very tough spot. Tried it again and made it through to the end.

...and a crap load of casual games.

2nd Plays of games, so I must have liked them...

Shadow Ops: Red Mercury
Call of Duty 2
Brothers in Arms I & II
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Deadly Dozen
Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza
Aura
Men of Valor
WWII Sniper
Purple Haze
Dracula: The Last Sanctuary
Dracula: Resurrection
...ok, I KNOW this will be a long list, so I'll stop there.

indeed the nes version was simplified (didn't know that)... on amiga and pc there's no mercy! you threw it in the sewer? your loss!

isn't it a bit early for such a list btw? i mean there's still a month left... i am still playing touche and blackwell unbound, and i am sure there will be one or two more games played before the end of 2007... so i'll be back then with a full list (full if i can remember them all, since 2007 was a big adv playing year)

Probably it is a bit early. I was originally going to hold off to later in December to post this.  But frankly I was bored,  and wanted to start a discussion of some kind here.  :

Sadly, I must say adventure games were a bust for me this year, I was highly disappointed.

Season One of Sam & Max was pretty good, and I got quite a few genuine laughs out of each episode, although the absurdist humour is starting to tire on me.

Penumbra: Overture also was pretty fun for what it was worth.

Other than that, nothing to speak of.  I finished Runaway 2, don't know why because I didn't think it was that good and I thought the first one was rather weak as well.  Pissed me off that it ended on a cliffhanger, especially since who knows how well it sold, and even if it did, it took them over four years to make this one so I don't know if I'll have the patience.  The Awakened, Operation Wintersonne, Dead Reefs and Next Life all turned me off within the first few hours.  And the fourth Broken Sword game, my favourite adventure game franchise, made me wish I had pretended it didn't exist.

Ah well, I didn't get around to playing the Treasure Island game yet, and Khoeps is usually at least reliable, and I really liked The Moment of Silence so I'm looking forward to their upcoming game, so maybe next year will be better on that front.

Next Life does indeed start a bit on the slow side. Once you get past that though, things do pick up and there are some really fun times in there... with quite a bit of variety. The island chapters can get a bit stale after a while though, but they do help to move the story forward... and the nude ladies didn't hurt either... :

You are right Ivinia about Next Life starting a little slow. It was just starting to pick up for me when the first nightmare came a slapped me in the face. Did you get past this arcade game? I could not get past the first 3 dots and have given up. Can't understand the developer, I might have an easier time if a game pad could be used instead of the arrow keys.
:-? :-X

I will hold off on my list for 2007 until after the new year as I am still playing games. Just not Next Life.

Yes, I finished it.

That mini-game isn't too bad. Are you stuck on what you are supposed to do with it? I can blast you a hint if you need it.

There is another mini game in there that was a real pain in the butt but I manged to get past it after numerous attempts.

Hm... let's see if I can remember all of them... thing is, I got a new computer in February and started to buy lots of games my old computer couldn't have handled (and games my old computer could have handled but which weren't for sale then). So I played lots of classic games this year, most of them were very good.

- Black Mirror. I liked it a lot except for the rather short ending and some logical glitches. Great atmosphere, nice graphics, interesting story.

- NiBiRu. A little on the short side, the main character is rather boring. Other than that: see Black Mirror

- Dracula Resurrection. Spooky atmosphere, easy puzzles, wonderful cutscenes; also a bit on the short side.

- The Longest Journey. Almost perfect, it had me glued to my computer for weeks.

- Keepsake. Wonderful graphics, a loveably heroine, good plot, very hard puzzles. Highly recommendable (if you install the latest patch, that is).

- Amerzone. Short but nevertheless worth playing.

- Syberia 1 + 2. The second game was not as interesting as the first installment and for me a little too much on the mystic side. Both games touched me, though; I've never cried when a game ended. Syberia made me do just that

- The Curse of Monkey Island. You can't help but love it

- The Moment of Silence. A little tedious in the beginning but then it gripped me. The only thing I absolutely hated about this game were the controls. Oh, and the strange dialogue system.

- Broken Sword 3 + 4. I love the BS-series; part 3 was a disappointment, though - not a huge one but I was glad when I had finished it and I don't intend to play it again very soon. Part 4 was a lot better (no keyboard controls, no more boxes, no action, better puzzles) and great to look at.

- Loch Ness (The Cameron Files). What a boring game. Cameron was boring, the story could have been a lot more interesting. Graphics were okay, though; so were the puzzles.

- Road to India. Probably the shortest game I ever played; finished it within 6 hours. Nothing special.

- Belief & Betrayal. If you like conspiracy theories involving the church, this is the game for you. I don't know if it's been released in the US yet but it's great fun (just pretend that the story is logical or ignore the logical glitches).

- Ankh. Fun, sweet, very colourful. Currently I'm trying to play Ankh - Heart of Osiris but the game has some technical issues (read: it won't start after restarting the computer) so I can't say if it's as good as the first Ankh.

- Nostradamus. Wonderful graphics, interesting story, lots of astrological puzzles. Too short, though.

- Louvre (The Final Curse a.k.a. The Messenger). The tricky bit about this one was handling the items in the inventory since space in the inventory was very limited. The ending was a slap in the face; other than that, a good game.

Games I started to play but haven't finished (yet):

- Dracula 2: The Last Sanctuary - I hate it when you can die 15 minutes in a game.

- Necronomicon: Worst sound ever, no subtitles, no thank you.

- Scratches: Too scared to carry on even though I'm almost through with day 2

- Sam & Max Hit the Road

- Atlantis 3 - The New World

- Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silver Earring (too much pixelhunting for my taste)

- Daemonica (gets boring after a while and feels like an RPG)

- Myst and Myst III: Exile. I just don't like them. I never get past the first half hour of playing in either of them.

- Post Mortem: A nasty bug prevents me from finishing the game; I'd have to start anew.

- Grim Fandango: I just don't like the controls of this one...

Uh. I think that's about it
Now that I see this list I cannot help but wonder where I find the time to play all these games (or at least try to play them)

Well, I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't start any games. Not only that, but I haven't even finished Myst IV or Faust, both of which I started playing in 2006. I used to play 30 or so a year. I guess I'm being stubborn and just want to conclude the games I have on the go before I get into any new ones. Myst IV has it's good parts, but the frustrations of the timed puzzles have soured me and I'm just not compelled to finish it. Faust was a replay at AG that petered out just before the last chapter was done.

I think I know which is that timed puzzle you are talking about, it was annoying for me too, but after that I loved Myst IV (I never thought someday I would say this of a Myst game!)
This year I played a lot of AGs, and I still must buy and finish some more before 2008 arrives (Culpa Innata, Darkness Within, Evil under the sun...) but Scratches and Myst IV are my favorites by now.

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars - Finally played this one. It was pretty good but didn't grab me. Though I liked George, there didn't seem to be any reason to what he was doing, and he lacked a backstory, which I felt was needed.
I did like it, but I felt like there was something missing.

Blackwell Legacy - I really like this game. The story, characters and writing are awesome, and the graphics may be low-res but still very good. The voice acting is excellent.

Blackwell Unbound - The writing is still very good, but there are a few plot-holes that could've been explained if the main character, Lauren, was a bit more fleshed out - again I would've wanted to know more of her history. I liked this one less than the first one, but it's still fun and engaging to play.

Runaway 2: The Dream of the Turtle - I swear it's called that way because the acronym is DOTT. That aside, graphics are still awesome, and much prettier since Hawaii is prettier that the desert. Gameplay has improved, but pretty much all of the characters we liked from the first game have changed into annoying idiots, starting with Brian. The lack of an ending doesn't help, either. It's sill much longer than the first, though. It's ok, but not something I'll play again in a while.

Murder on the Orient Express - Not a very memorable game. Nice grpahics, good voice acting, aweful inventory combining system. I don't remember most of the puzzles. Also, I don't really like games where I have to go back and forth in the same location for about 50 times. Pretty mediocre.

Sam and Max Season One - Fun. Each episode had it's moments, I especially liked 1 and 5. Puzzles were mostly very easy. It's a shame that it runs so slowly on my machine...

Barrow Hill - Not my kind of game. Nice atmoshpere and some really bizarre design decisions (everytime you play you'll see the company logo 3 times. 3!). I hate node-based navigation and puzzles that require heavy note writing so I knew to come with an open mind. I didn't hate it, but the story didn't interest me enough for me to like it.

Nightlong - A pretty umemorable game. OK graphics (good for the time), some dead-ends near the end of the game that took me by surprise. I couldn't get into the story, but it was ok overall.

Destination: Treasure Island - All Kheops adventures are pretty much the same - good graphics, boring story and characters, great puzzles and awesome interface. I wish they'd stop their frantic scheduel and give the writers some time.

Echo: Secrets of the Lost Cavern - See above.

Bisocopia - Another node-based puzzle game. I played this one to refresh my biology knowledge, but it didn't help much. The puzzles weren't much fun so what was the point...

Nancy Drew: Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake - My first ever Nancy Drew game! It was ok. Some puzzles were nice and some were reaslly annoying and graphics were kind of bland. The story was ok, but not as comlex as I thought it would be. Navigation was a real chore.

Blacksrone Chronicles - An alright game. I couldn't get into it much. Not as spooky or unsettling as I'd hoped, and there was too much reading (with joined writing which is a pet peeve of mine).

Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened - Pretty good game with some annoying flaws such as impossibly small writing in the inventory and some strange event triggers. The graphics are bland and there's some really stupid stealth sequences, but voice acting was good and the puzzles were fun. Overall I enjoyed it.

Secrets of Atlantis - Didn't like it very much. Too much walking back and forth and getting lost, and the story only starts two hours into playing. Puzzles were kind of tedious but graphics were nice.

Secret Files: Tunguska - Such an annoying main character! An ok game. If it only had a better story...

Ankh 2: Heart of Osiris - I had a lot of fun playing this. The humor was still weird, but the puzzles were a lot of fun. Too bad it became tedious in the last act. Still, I liked it.

I'm probably including some games I played in 2006, 2005 etc...

I haven't heard of half of these games but I do find such threads interesting.

I've had hardly any playtime this year on account of my studies coming first and my carpel tunnel issues forcing me to limit my keyboard/mouse activity.  Happily I'm scheduled to have the first hand fixed before xmas so maybe next year I can play the swag of games I bought this year and haven't opened.

Played 2007
Sacred Rings, glad to finally finish it, not as good as Aura 1
Safecracker 2, fun puzzles.
Celtica, still playing.
Atlantis 2, almost finished.  Dated but interesting enough.

Games bought but not played
Alida
Nibiru
Runaway
Zork Nemesis
Broken Sword 3
Agon
Keepsake
The Dig
The Haunted Carousel, ND
Murder on the Orient Express

So I'll just put them on last year's pile of bought and unplayed.   And we won't mention the even longer list of games half-played and then abandoned because I lost interest.

Games this year

Culpa Innata – disappointing after all the hype
Anacapri the Dream – my game of the year, two solid weeks to play (evenings only!) My advice, admire the scenery, don't be in a hurry to finish and the game will almost solve itself.
Sam & Max season 1 – excellent comedy game episodes
Evil under the Sun – best Christie yet, innovative hint system within game
Schizm 2 – good puzzle game, some too tough for me,  very weak story
Legend of Crystal Skull – graphics a bit dark, but good fun
White Wolf of Icicle Creek – ND back on form
Alida – lonely exploration but enjoyable
Vikings – liked the boat building
Genesys – too simple
Crusader – weak ending
East side story – has it’s own charm
Runaway 2 – not impressed by this, what were the developers thinking of (the money)?
Operation Wintersun – not impressed by this either
Destination Treasure Island – loved the cannon! Fun
Mystery of the Orangery - short but a different graphic experience

Replays

Dame was loaded – classic PI stuff
Ripley’s Believe it or not – worked better inside DOSbox than under win95 originally. A classic too.
Jewels of the Oracle – play abandoned after new graphics card killed the game under XP

Still to come

Secrets of Atlantis

Needed to buy a new DVD drive (Runaway 2)
Needed to buy a graphics card to play EUTS, CI & SOA

It’s been a good year.

Next to nothing. But I am extremely in the mood for adventure right now...I'm "starving".

I haven't ordered Sam & Max Season 1. I know, season 2 is already starting.  :
I plan on ordering it, for Christmas.

I just recently started/finished Destination Treasure Island. It is good. Not as good as RTMI, because they removed the score to simplify things. Too bad, because I really liked that idea. You notice that DTI is not as tricky as RTMI was, due to the lack of a score. DTI is not as short as I was led to believe (that's why I held off on it while it was about 40 bucks), but certainly not a big game.
Both can't beat Voyage, which I liked most. Although there was no real score, either. I mean, there is one, but I think it's just fake.
Then again, I didn't try to beat it a second time, which I should.

And that's it. I got Syberia and Syberia 2 and I'm somewhere in Syberia, not having tried for a long time. I played non-adventure games like Arx Fatalis, Etherlords 2 and Breath of Fire 4. Didn't finish any of them. I have a VERY brief attention span these days.

And those games take up a lot of time, while all of them are great. I go back to BoF4 some time soon,  I think, because I love console type RPGs.

Hold on, something else...
Those Oberon games are a tease! (Those linked by JA+ in case you are wondering.) There are so many of them and they are fun, while most of it is just the same 10 concepts in different stylings. Which isn't to say it's bad. But I probably won't order any of those. But then, they also got a puzzle game (Azada) and...an RPG (Aveyond...look for it in the action section, some way down...am I just blind or is there no search function?)! It seems to be pretty large in scope, too. It's basically the same game you played 100 times on consoles, though. And there is a Potion Maker strategy game...that's a good one, too.
Anyway...those games are done very well. I wonder how the same engine can produce all these various types of games or if it is the same engine.

It seems you haven´t played many good games Taio hahahha. Don´r even bother getting culpa innata, it ain´t worth playing at all. It´s what I think, so it`s correct.

Well I did it! Finally finished Myst IV. I almost gave up at the Mangree/tree top debaucle, about 20 tries to finish that sequence
. The clouds were annoying, but doable. Just glad I'm done.
So I made a fresh start and got into Keepsake. Yay! Not only fun, but good puzzles too. I'm back in the groove

"How Colpet Got Her (Adventure) Groove Back", eh? Very good to hear.

I was planning on getting to Myst IV this year, but other games kept getting in the way and I decided to hold off until I finished up those other games. It's probably just as well -- based on comments like this that I'm hearing about its difficulty, it's probably going to require my full and undivided attention! No RPG's to distract me, no puzzle games pulling me away, etc.

see, i knew what i was talking about when i said dec 1 was too early... since then i've played 4 or 5 more adventures! (dec saw a big adv gaming surge!)... so here's everything (i think) i played in 2007 adventure-wise (non-adventures listed here)... the top 3 are listed in a "top 3 2007" fashion... the rest are in no particular order:

[size=20]1. Culpa Innata (replay)
don't need any more comments here, do i? 8-)

[size=18]2. Sam & Max Season 1
this was FANTASTIC! i was very worried after sam & max hit the road being one of my fav advs ever, but telltale delivered... ok, maybe it was waaaay too easy and short (about 1.5-2 episodes a day) but it was so much fun it blew me away... can't wait for season 2 to end and be released complete (NO, i am NOT playing in an episodic fashion)

[size=18]3. Runaway 2
ok, so it practically had no ending and featured a really bad puzzle... so? everything else about this game was great

4. The Secrets Of Atlantis
a nice installment in the atlantis series

5. Broken Sword 4: Angel Of Death
nothing much

6. Freddy Pharkas
excellent!!!

7. Mission Critical
if it's legend, you know it's good!

8. Space Quest 6
pretty good... surprisingly, too easy

9. The Cassandra Galleries
Valerie started this by herself but i joined in pretty early in the game... whatever one could expect from this kind of a game... some interesting puzzles

10. Zelenhgorm Episode 1
the reason i hate episodic gaming... better not have released this at all than leaving it incomplete like that... could have been a pretty descent adventure

11. Al Emmo And The Lost Dutchman's Mine (replay)
played a preview version for the, erm, preview... it was complete but missed the ending sequence... now i saw that too... very good game, true to the good old sierra days

12. Scratches: The Last Visit
as much as i liked scratches, i was pretty disappointed with this... i guess if i had played it back then, right after the main game as a bonus, i would have felt different

13. Dead Reefs
nothing to write home about, but pretty good atmosphere... no probs with the controls at all!

14. Okuldeje 3 - Eternal Fear
short freeware game... played it cause alex tait challenged everyone to play this without a walkthrough, because of its extreme pixel hunting... indeed there were a couple of really bad cases... very disappointing ending too, right where the game seemed to be peaking... it was like the developer wanted to follow the cure's "everything is coming to a grinding halt"!

15. Obsidian
it happened in 2007... a myst clone i really liked!!

16. Starship Titanic
this one was great

17. Ankh - Heart Of Osiris
exactly like ankh and very enjoyable

18. Remedy
19. Hope Springs Eternal
20. Time Stand Still
21. East Side Story

one of the big surprises for me this year... simple adventure games that got me hooked beyond hope! can't wait for carol reed's next mystery

22. Titanic: Adventure Out Of Time
very good adventure, kinda ruined it towards the end with its timed crap

23. Amber: Journeys Beyond
wow was this short! pretty good though

24. Agatha Christie: Evil Under The Sun
better than orient express, not as good as attwn... very nasty graphics bug that annoyed the crap out of me

25. Aura 2: The Sacred Rings
i liked aura 1 and i liked aura 2 even more

26. Blade Runner
very good... great atmosphere... first adv game played fully on a 37'' tv!

27. HCA: The Ugly Prince Duckling
this could have been good... a lost opportunity for a great adventure

28. Limbo Of The Lost
enjoyed it a lot... you'll be reading more about it soon

29. Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened
the best sherlock game, and runner up in the top games of the year... can't wait to start arsene lupin

30. The Blackwell Legacy
31. Blackwell Unbound

both were excellent... not many puzzles but great story and characters

32. Necronomicon
just ok

33. Tony Tough
started this a long time ago but just couldn't get into it... restarted again now and loved every minute of it!

34. Grim Fandango (replay)
the reason i wanted to replay this was because i remember liking it but never as much as some ppl have been raving about... i thought maybe i didn't remember it good, but i did... a really good adventure game, but not the absolute #1 as presented by some

35. Undercover: Operation Wintersun
mediocre

The Unfinished Ones:

36. The Dark Eye can never seem to be able to get into this game
37. Touche not bad at all... haven't really dropped it

next in line are arsene lupin, next life or ghost in the sheet... don't know which one i'll be starting yet, but it probably won't be today, so those will be 2008 plays

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

Thanks...I thought I might have over done it this year but I see I am not alone. I too started The Dark Eye recently and its not so much as I can't get into this game it's more like I can't grasp this game. So far I still don't know the what and why for of what I am doing. Not to be given up yet, though I might have to make a trip to the library to read some of Edgar Allen Poe's work.
