Just for a change, I bought Resident Evil 4, Tomb Raider Anniversary, and Far Cry. (I usually only buy adventure games and I didn’t know really what I was buying.)

I am enjoying Tomb Raider. Mostly because I get to explore and avoid traps. Resident Evil 4 is not as much fun because you don’t get to explore, but it is scary. I didn’t like Far Cry at all. I didn’t know it was a FPS. I don’t know what kind of game Tomb Raider is, but I enjoy controlling a character, whereas in Far Cry, I play a shooter. (Which I don’t care for.)

What is the name of the category for Tomb Raider? It’s not a first person shooter like Far Cry.  I would like to buy some more games like this, which combine a character you control and exploring, but I don’t know the category name.

Do you have any suggestions for other games like Tomb Raider? (No FPS please)

Thanks
Kori

Tomb Raider, by definition, is the best Adventure series ever made -

Dictionary dot com: Adventure

And... Lara's pretty easy on the eyes too

Edit -

My only suggestion is that they make more of them.

What?

Tomb Raider is a third-person Action/adventure game. Right now I don't remember other games from this genre, apart from Harry Potter series. They are third-person Action/adventure games too, you should try them.
I do remember other Survival Horror games apart from RE4, like Silent Hill, Parasite Eve, Clock Tower, Obscure and more.

The Prince of Persia games are an obvious similarity to Tomb Raider.

Would also try Beyond Good and Evil

Okay, I guess I’m looking for third-person Action/adventure games, where there is a little exploring, a few puzzles, a scare or two, and a little shooting. And I hate to say it, but I like good graphics. I know some of you don’t care, but I got spoiled by playing my newest Tomb Raider game. Resident Evil graphics are not very good, but I enjoy shooting the zombies. I feel guilty shooting mercenaries In Tomb Raider, but zombies, I don’t mind shooting.

Thanks everyone.
I only posted this an hour ago. Don’t any of you have day jobs?

My now-retired mom has come to the conclusion that people don't work anymore, based on all the (younger-looking) individuals she sees out and about during the day.

Although, we could ask you the same question.

I'm self employed. I work at home, but I don't play games until after nine in the evening. I keep stick hours for work and play. You have to be a stick boss, when you work for yourself.

I gave up "day jobs" a very long time ago shortly after college when I started a real career and stopped watching the clock. Even before then, I worked nights, weekends and holidays during school and then worked 80-hour weeks as an executive creative director over the next ten plus years. For the past decade, I 've set my own hours as a freelance consultant mostly working from a formal home office.

At this point, if I actually tried sticking to a strict 9 to 5 schedule, I'd go broke. That's because several of my biggest and best clients have interests all over the world. So I make myself available to them where ever they travel and what ever time zone they're in. I'm here to accommodate their schedule / deadlines not mine.

Cheers,  Terry

This is off topic. I’ve been meaning to post a question on this forum in some section. It probably should be in Developer's Zone. But, some of you have been around here awhile.

Have any of you ever been AG beta testers? If yes, how were you contacted?

I have no idea where to look for beta testers. How would I go about contacting beta testers, when and if, I needed them?

I second the excellent game Psychonauts. You can find it for $10 on Amazon or $20 off of Steam.

The Harry Potter games are fun but simple - I enjoyed the ones I have played (the first two). I found Prince of Persia to be much too hard for me but the atmosphere was nice, what little I saw of it.

You would probably also like Tomb Raider: Legend. I only played the demo, but it was pretty fun. There were some shooting parts but they were very short and simple. Beyond Good & Evil is another fantastic game (you can get it in the JA Store). The review for it is here:

If you have a Playstation 2 or Xbox, the Fatal Frame series is really scary.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

That would depend on what kinds of games you're looking to beta-test: bigger-budget releases or independently-developed.

Sometimes they post an announcement on their site.  A few have done so here on JA.  I'm not sure how bigger companies recruit beta-testers.  I'm a [free] member at Gamespot and will get the occasional mass e-mail about a beta-testing opportunity (but it's never for an adventure game). so sometimes it's just a matter of being in the right spot/community at the right time.

Member LenG does lots of beta-testing, so you might want to ask him.

I'd highly recommend the two more recent Indiana Jones 3D type games, because they basically ARE Tomb Raider.
