Portal is a superb little game. Nice little puzzles with a hilarious script.

Yes it's from "the Orange Box"
There is a womans voice that talks to you throughout the game leading you through the levels etc.
Even the gun turrets talk to you (actually they apologise for shooting you) and if you are incredibly lucky your weighted companion cube will talk to you. (I euphanised mine :'()

Great series, lousy support.

I got the 360 version. No steam issues.

You wouldn't be shunning it just because of Steam, would you?
I'll take Steam over other forms of copy control any day of the week.
For what it's worth, I've had technical problems with a Steam game and, while they were a tad slow about it, they did eventually refund my purchase price. (The technical problem was inherent to the game's code and had nothing to do with Steam.)

Guilty :
I do enjoy the series - it's just that I found their technical support a bit lacking (actually it's was non existent). I eventually resolved the issue myself, but you've raised my interest - how did you manage to get a response? Email doesn't seem to get their attention.

Steam bounced me to the publisher and the publisher bounced me to the developer and the developer bounced me to the game engine vendor. The game engine vendor couldn't be bothered. So I went back to the beginning and made a pest of myself. And got a refund.
The game engine, by the way, is Torque. Useless. Does not work on newer GeForce cards.

I didn't have any issues with them either - until I bought Sin Emergence... and got zip, nada, no responses when the game failed to start. Having an issue is one thing - failing to respond to a request for help is another (especially if it's a brand new game).
I'm a fairly big Half-Life fan, I'm sure I'll bend to the pressure. :

Status : Offline | My only issue with Steam is the speed (sometimes it's slow starting a game).
My BIG issue with it... I purchased Half Life2 when it first came out, rushed home to play, installed it (into Steam? ok whatever).
I waited like 4 hours for it to authenticate to Steam so I could play the game I just purchased at the store.
What?
Not kidding. And every time I played it afterwards it had to call home and make sure I bought it? There was word going around on the forums if you connected to Steam then disconnected and stood on your head with a banana in your ear... you could force Steam to stop that non-sense (besides I had no intention of playing multiplayer anyway).
I haven't thought much about buying Episode 2. I thought since I bought a $79USD+ gold version when it came out I was entitled to Episode 2 et al. I guess not.
If I did get it, I think the 360 version looks far more attractive -- Steam-less.

Fun fact: Mike Patton is the voice of the 'angry ball thingy' in the end bit Its only him going awehhaeehaaaarraeawwww but still funny
P.S - Steam seems a pretty contentious 'issue' for gamers. IMO it's the best way of getting games and has been completely reliable since release - speed and uptime wise; except for having to wait half a day for Bioshock to validate :/ I like my games just updating themselves, and if you have fast internet I don't see why you wouldn't want to be able to play your game midnight, the second it releases ;p
I agree with the lack of direct support - however, with a community forums as healthy as Steampowered have never long had a problem and haven't needed to await an answer from Valve.

Status : Online | I played Portal and I loved it. Is it a contender to be in my "All Time Favorites"? Maybe. I need to give it some time to process in my brain and play through it again. Is it better than The Curse of Monkey Island? Psychonauts? Definitely not.
But as for Steam, I have a TON of games that are now available on Steam that I cannot register with Steam since I originally purchased the boxed copy and since Steam didn't get any of the profits then I cannot link them to Steam, which irks me. Safecracker, Titan Quest, Warhammer 40K, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, Psychonauts, the list goes on and on.
I am the type of person who likes to see the box on my shelf, if possible. I love to read game manuals (the Guild Wars ones are superb) and look at the artwork. I also like the "hunt" of finding the box copy, so that's why I only have Steam for Valve games... because well, you have to, no choice.
