I guess in that case, I'd have gone blind. But, as I am a very curious person...I read a few of them. :
I can still here the footsteps! After finishing Neverhood, when I closed my eyes, I could still see the inscriptions!

Status : Online | I'm playing TLJ at the moment... I haven't finished it yet, but so far it is definitely one of the best adventure games I have ever played, even if some of the dialogues WERE a beet tediously lengthy at times... It has one of the best, most immersive storylines in any game I've played.
And as for the whole language & lesbianism issue, I think that TLJ is, as was pointed out earlier, not really designed for kids, so it wasn't really that much of an issue for me. In fact, I think that it probably helped to make the dialogues much stronger, and less tedious.

Status : Offline | Lesbianism? It isn't my favorite thing, but I don't worry about it very much. To me there is a big difference between sexual orientation and the ability to use non-vulgar language. If it makes a young person want to discuss issues involving sexual orientation, I think that's great.  o I think the character in question fit the stereotype for all that cussing? Sure.
Lesbianism isn't my favorite thing ether but the way they did it in this game I didn't even think of it that way until I saw people talking about it here. I took it, they were just friends and really nothing more. I had to play it again just to see what every one was talking about. Now I still don't think there was anything to it, to speek of.

Status : Online | well good old D H Lawrence. He certainly started something with his fucking violets. There are many books with swear words(anglo saxon, not foul language). Many of us use them.Flipper certainly would. And even the soaps use lesbian and gay themes. Have you noticed this forum avoids lesbian topics though? Let`s get real and adult. These games are not for children.

Let me think what you are talking about again...ah, yes, I think...
ok. you're talking about something else than what I was talking about so my reply was not in place. Sorry.

| Deleted User | I was thinking about two things when I wrote that.
The first and most obvious was indeed that your reply sounded like you considered the concept of lesbianism unsuitable for children. Your clarification made me realize that I had misunderstood you, and I'm sorry about that. I do not recall how the dialogue went, but if it contained explicit references to sexual relations I understand your original point.
My second, more obtuse point was that the game contained something much more disturbing than chatting about sex or talking with a salty seadog. The scene where April confronts a memory from her childhood is certainly the least suited for a younger crowd.
I'll try to not assume the worst in the future.

Now, about the part you're talking about- is it the part near the end where April's father explains why he treated her like he did? Because I don't exactly remember what was said there and I don't remember if they ever actually say what he did to her that made her run away.

| Deleted User | It's been a while since I played the game. I got the impression there had been sexual abuse, but maybe it wasn't stated explicitly. But even without a clear idea of what's going on I would think it'd be a very disturbing scene.

Somehow the way April responded to whatever happened to her makes me think that the abuse was not sexual but emotional and maybe at times phyical. It just seems that April would've left home earlier if the abuse was that bad. I don't know. From what her father tells her at the end it seems like he just treated her badly and would ignore her most of the time, more than actually doing something to her.

| Deleted User | Whoa! I completely missed that part of the game. Or I have simply forgot about it.
It's beyond me why some things in TLJ are supposed to be so controversial. It's not a game designed for kids in the first place. If you can't take the sex and the swearing etc. you shouldn't even go and watch Hollywood teen movies, at least those that aren't so politically correct that they have got rid of anything "sensitive". For once, here's a game with a character that has been given a genuine personality and a history, of which the actual game just taps into. That thing about April's father for one: We don't know exactly what has happened, but we are shown a little part of it. Just like you can get subtle hints of a real person's backgrounds every now and then just from being around them.
Strangely enough, the adventure genre has only tapped into these sorts of things a few times. With the full power to tell a story like a book does and more, there is room for more depth. People remember games fondly where they feel that the characters makes some sort of spiritual journey in the game. Like Kate in Syberia or Manny in Grim Fandango. And not to forget of course, Gabriel Knight and Grace Nakimura.

I call it "The Longest Conversation". I am glad I played it, but April needs to find something interesting to yak on and on over……..
I nearly wore out my 'right clicker' on my mouse to make her shut the f**k up, so I could speed read her blather. LOL

I usually brought some snacks to eat while watching the longer conversations.
