Ok, ok, feeling a little under pressure here to get a few new topics goin so...... About TLJ, I know, I know most people love this game to death, but....I dont, thought
it was worth a play but I felt alot of the puzzles were illogical and there was just way to much dialoge ( for me anyway ) I found myself using the text to read cuz I could get thru it faster that way, and the ending in my opinion was so,so, I admit the graphics were great, and the story was pretty cool but I just cant see how this game is so beloved.  ???

Okay you can all blast me now, but at least its a new topic.

No one's gonna blast you. :
Well, I'm not.

I think it's just like any other game- a matter of personal taste and the mood you are in when you play it. I loved TLJ because I became totally immersed in the game. Perhaps TLJ was "in the right place at the right time" with me. I was in the mood for that type of game when I played it and the lengthy dialog was not a problem (and it has been a problem in other games).

We can be heroes, just for one day.

No, not going to blast you, why would I.  I loved the game and as mentioned before, even to the point of reading all the books in the library.

On the other hand, already mentioned,  I thought Syberia was just another game except the beautiful cut scenes and the music.  I could find nothing outstanding about it.

I will play TLJ again, I won't be playing Syberia again.

I guess what counts is how the game affects you and involves you in the adventure as to what you think about it.

Deleted UserAthmosphere! There you have it. Some dialogue seuqences had me banging my head into the wall in agony and some puzzles sure were a little stupid, but the game world just sucked me in. I needed to know what happened next, so I just couldn't stop playing!

I agree about the atmosphere.  That is the mark of a great AG to me, and TLJ was great for me.  I disagree strongly about dialogue though.  If it aids the plot then I'm all for it.
Of course, it has been a while, so maybe I'm forgetting something).  TLJ is one of the very few AG's I'm getting ready to play again.

BTW, I know it was hot before, but I disagree with what seemed to be the majority view that the cursing added to the appeal of the game.  I'm not arguing against the author's right to use it, I just agree with those that said it cost sales.  I really can't see a whole lot of sales being made because it had f*** in it, but I KNOW sales were lost because of it.  It would have been a great game for younger players.  I also have my own opinions about people who can't open their mouths without cussing.
Okay, that should get some discussion going I hope.

Sir, I respectfully disagree. I feel that it is entirely within my (or anyone else's) rights to use strong language. Of course no one is forced to listen if they do not wish to do so. But I see no reason why I should restrict myself to a mere subset of the expressive power of any given language. And my willingness to restrict myself diminishes in inverse proportion to the number of people who tell me to do so.

In other words, if someone does not like that, f**k them

And again, you would allow younger players to play the game if no cursing but you would let them play where it has discussion of a lesbian relationship?  Interesting!

There is only a little cursing and on either swearing or lesbisan subjects, who cares.

Cripes, I hear worse than that from the kids in the play yard that is part of this townhome complex.

Remind me MichalN, to not be drinking some water or whatever when reading your excellent last lines.

I figured that last comment of mine might get some comments rolling.

The right to use foul language? Sure.  The wisdom of it I think is in question.  In some situations it is quite useful and very appropriate.  Of course, the same right to use it allows others to point out that it may be counterproductive.

Lots of kids use foul language in the playground as do many young adults (and others) everywhere else.   It still doesn't make it correct.  I think it simply shows a lack of vocabulary when used constantly.

Lesbianism?  It isn't my favorite thing, but I don't worry about it very much.  To me there is a big difference between sexual orientation and the ability to use non-vulgar language.  If it makes a young person want to discuss issues involving sexual orientation, I think that's great.
o I think the character in question fit the stereotype for all that cussing?  Sure.

So, to paraphrase a forum regular, "I say f*** anyone who says f***."

Perhaps. But I still think it's up to the authors to decide whether to do it or not - and no one else should make the decision for them.

That's the spirit!

Just to clarify my point, I'm not advocating that anyone should have forced the author to change the language.  I just think it would have been better without it.  He can do what he wants.
And I'll admit, I'll still buy the sequel)

Hey, I never said I had intellect or vocabulary, did I?

The language didn't bother me at all.  The rest of the game did.  Bad: Graphics, dialogue, voice acting, running all over the place, stupid story, etc.  Good: NOTHING!
Suckiest game ever made, next to GK3.  Total crap.

You nailed it!

The right to use foul language? Sure.

Wait a minute...The Spanish version didn't have any foul language, or courses....I f****ng missed it!!!

Of course, the same right to use it allows others to point out that it may be counterproductive.

Yes, you have a point there. But, this far, I've never played a game with a counterproductive "foul" language.  If it aids the plot and is according to the story, seems to me it can't be foul.  Of course, it's only an opinion.

Lesbianism?

Was there lesbianism too??

The only reason I would have preferred to have the language not there is because I loved the game.  I got completely entranced by parts of the game.  I just feel bad if anyone didn't get to experience the masterpiece because of this.  If there had been an option to filter the language, I personally would not have used it.  But I know I could have gotten another 3 copies sold at least.

All of this is simply a tribute to the game.

With its crappy graphics and all.

Deleted UserI agree that the dialogue was important. In fact, its contribution to the depth of the story was the thing that saved it. At one point when I had to spend about an hour listening to dialogue I said to myself "am I still playing a computer game here?" All I had done for what seemed like an eternity was clicking the mouse at the same spot. I know I could have skipped some branches of the dialogue tree, but I always want to hear everything. Go ahead, just call me a masochist...

For me all the yakkin just really seemed to slow the game down and make me impatient, but I HAVE to know everything they say, because of course it's probably important to the game, but it really did drive me crazy.

Well said!

Reminds me of one of my favorite old text adventures, Curses (about a family curse). I always have my list of dirty words handy whenever I play text adventures and sometimes I'm rewarded. (I won't reveal anything that's important to the game itself, but I'll leave some spoiler space anyway for people who don't want to be spoiled...)

..

.

So I typed the F word. Game was not amused. "That sort of language is an absolute disgrace, and you're going to have to pay the price for it." Hehe. Funny Game will give me -10 points, see if I care. OK, let's go east now. No way, Game meant business. "You're going nowhere until you make amends for that nasty bad language." What's there to do when Game is calling all the shots? I offered a weak "sorry" but Game coldly informed me that "sorry isn't good enough!" I tried a few equally cowardly commands before I discovered that a cake of carbolic soap had been added to my inventory!

Just ordered it on everyone's advice, now just have to wait for it to arrive - hopefully by the end of the week.

So far as cussing is concerned - well so what! It's like "what's in a name?"  Well I think what's in a word, nothing more than a series of letters strung together. Its not the word that counts, but the meaning the speaker is trying to portray. F***** that some people object to - well as Mia Farrow said some years ago when arrested for using it in London - "What's wrong with that, it's the nicest thing you could ever wish anyone."

Anyway, seriously a lot of people who don't swear say and mean far more hurtful things than people who do.

ROTFL! Haven't heard that one before... BTW my boss is Australian and he cusses a lot. And so do his parents. Americans are usually shocked when they hear them

The remark about Mia Farrow, probably before your time Michal, it was I think after she did the Peyton Place series - hey you may not even have been born then!
I think actually it was in the late 1960's or early 1970's.
I remember it caused quite a stir in New Zealand in the papers, people thought it hillarious.
