Regarding bouganvillea, they love the sun, like being root bound and don't need too much water.

These are one of the best Spring/Summer type plants around - I tend to plant them where ever I live...  Gotta watch out for the thorns though...

Some of the dwarf ones we have here are supposed to be thornless, haven't grown those ones myself though.

Love the sound of your garden medicro, am I right in thinking you are from England or Scotland?   The gardens over there in the summer are absolutely glorious, I can smell the flowers just thinking about them.
