It started last Friday afternoon and it's still going on. Dozens of fires suddenly began in various parts of Greece.

The arsonists knew their job very well. The picked the driest and most windy season of the year. The fire department is incapable of handling all these fires. 62 dead people so far, hundreds of injured ones, entire villages and small towns wiped off the map and it's not over yet... it looks like it's going to get worse before it gets better.

My parents' house was only a couple of miles away from the mountain and I could see one of the fires clearly, but thankfully they're not in danger. The entire city of Athens is covered with ashes. The conditions in rural areas are much worse.

We're experiencing our very own 9/11, but we don't have a clue who the enemy is or the ultimate purpose of this madness. This was not an act of a handful of madmen. It was obviously carefully planned long ago. I wish I knew why. They even made phone calls to the fire department raising false alarms to misdirect their forces to other areas minutes before the fires erupted.

My family and friends are all right so far, but some of them lost their entire family business. At least they're still alive.

The media keep broadcasting horror pictures and pleads for help from the enclaves. It's madness... I'm in total shock.

Every animal runs away from the fire. Only the worst animal of all, the human being, sets it on purpose...

Our TV stations here in Croatia keep talking about that all day long. It's terrible, and the worst thing is some tourist agencies keep going there after all! They're putting people's lives in jeopardy for their fees. I sometimes can't understand other people.

I've heard some countries sent their help also, and I hope the fires are put out soon.
I've started with nothing and I still have most of it left

Deleted User[size=14]OMG ...... Is it authenticated (more or less) that this is a deliberate act against your country and people ?
And not "just" a catastrophe of Nature ??

[size=14]Israel to send firefighters to Greece to help battle fires.
~~~ By Agencies ~~~
****  Israel will send 25 firefighters with equipment to Greece to help battle fires raging in several areas in the country, the foreign ministry said Sunday.
****  The firefighters will leave on the first available flight to Greece, a spokesman for the ministry said. He noted that the aid was being sent at the request of the Greek Government.
It is an act of men, that much is definite. Whether they're Greeks (terrorists? sociopaths? no idea) or foreigners, we don't know. It has been proven in the past that some profiteers would set forests on fire in order to sell the land to house builders, but that's certainly not the case now, as most of the areas are impossible to built on. We're simply clueless at this point, just trying to save human lives.
We have these people too Alkis.  Arsonists, madman who set fire to the countryside.  Sometimes they are even firefighters.
Australia regularly burns with fires started by lightening as well as those deliberately lit.  I'm sure every Australian watching our TV news sympathises with the people of Athens right now.  We understand what you're going through.  Our capital city was burning like this a couple of years ago and I've stood in the city centre watching the Adelaide Hills burn.
The air pollution in Athens must be ghastly.   I hope the authorities catch the culprits and lock them up for a long time.   Meanwhile, take care, we're all thinking of you.
lock them up for a long time? no no no... here's what should be done... whoever is caught, be thrown in a dungeon (not a cell, smth undergroung)... then hang them by the wrists so that the tips of their toes just barely touch the ground... then beat them up daily for the rest of their lives... maybe some medieval torture too would be good
of course, unfortunately, if you did that there would be some stupid "humanitarian" organizations protesting about their human "rights", when of course they actually have less rights than a worm... but in an ideal world, one would be able to see this human excrement pay in the worst way imaginable... hey, maybe there can also be tickets where one can go and have some fun with them, like pull out their fingernails or drill their teeth with a black&decker... you know, fun stuff [smiley=furious.gif] [smiley=furious.gif] [smiley=furious.gif]
but since i can never have the pleasure to see this happen, i just hope they are caught and rot in jail
You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.
Hope everything is all right with you and your family and friend, and I hope the fires in Greece end soon. In Portugal we know very well what fire can do and what men can cause to others and to the environment. Two years ago there were lots of fires all around the country, the last year was also a bad year for the forest and this one seems to be more calm, mainly because the summer hasn't been so hot and also, in someplaces, there's still hardly any wood to be burned....
And Aya, I don't think puting arsonists in prison is a good thing...I would prefer to burn them, just a little bit, and then make them replant and take care of all of the trees, animals, houses, the fire they created has destroyed....
Alkis, it must be terrible for everyone in Greece at the moment, as Caroline mentioned, we have many deliberately lit fires in Australia, sometimes kids of course, but not always. Where I live in South East Queensland the fire season started early this year mainly because of the drought, but so far it hasn't been quite as bad as anticipated and we've never had anything co-ordinated in Australia as appears to have happened in Greece.
I heard on the news at 6a.m. this morning that Greece has 23 suspects and that 6 (I think) have already been charged with arson. Let's hope they catch and convict the lot of them!
Have to agree with Technospike
.....of course that will never happen!
Deleted UserHoping that you and all your family & friends are OK.
We also know of the perils of fires.
A few times a year (usually only about 3 or 4 times), we get a khamsin which is a scorching hot and very dry wind coming from the deserts in the east.
Due to the combination of heat, wind and almost zero humidity, they can be very dangerous.
One of my daughters and family (husband & 4 children) lived about 15 kms from Jerusalem.  They owned a Nursery (plants & flowers) and a villa just a couple of hundred metres away.
There was a very dangerous fire about 10 years ago which completely burnt up their Nursery, and reached the very hedges surrounding their house... but very fortunately they managed to stop it before it damaged their house in any way.
N.B.  However, don't feel sorry for them.  Her husband, a VERY shrewd guy, was given a permit to build on the burnt out plot which he didn't have before!  And so, being a very capable builder and entrepreneur, he built a very attractive wedding & functions hall which is far better financially than the Nursery ever was.
