My heart goes out to you and your family Randy.
Hopefully the treatment in Indianapolis will make a big difference in your son's health and you will have great news to report next time.
Meanwhile, hang in there and take heart in knowing that Lance Armstrong beat this disease and so did you.
Cheers, Terry

Status : Offline | Randy, here's a direct quote from Lance Armstrong: 'Ask hard questions. Insist on second, third, and fourth opinions. Sometimes the tendency for people in most of their hometowns is to stay there—to go down the street to the corner oncology shop and be content with what they are going to be given. I was diagnosed in a smart city, a big city, a progressive city. But I ended up having to leave Austin and go to Indianapolis to get the right mix of treatment and care. Without that, my life would have been very different. I suspect I would have lived. But, without a change in treatment and a change in protocol, I wouldn’t have raced again…'
This is exactly what you're doing which is the most you could possibly do for your son. Lance had extensive spread and yet, even almost a decade ago they cured him. I'm sure they've learned a lot since then and I think you're in the best possible hands you could possibly be. As well, certain forms of this type of cancer were some of the first ones that was seeing cures going back to the 1970s. There are lots of very good reasons for hope and optimism that good results will occur for your son and all of us are going to keep those positive thoughts for Randy Jr.!

The future ain't what it used to be!

Keeping my fingers tightly crossed.
We have a lot of genetic cancer in our family so I have knowledge of what you're both going through.
We also know of several close cases (not 'celebrities') of complete cures. I sincerely hope that your son will be another one ! [smiley=thumbup.gif] [smiley=thumbup.gif]

Randy is currently in hospital finishing up a week of chemo.
Last week we drove to Indianapolis and met with Dr. Einhorn. Great doctor and his success rate it 90%, but our insurance company will not approve or pay for treatments in Indy (though I'm sure they would if it was one of their relatives), so Dr. Einhorm will consult with doctor in Pittsburgh for treatments.
Next week we have meeting about stem cell transplants. These should occur, I think near end of Sept. Randy will then go into hospital for extensive chemo that is 5x stronger that what he is receiving now. Two days of chemo and 8 days recuperation. Possiblity of permanent deafness. Also very susceptible to any viruses, etc. Then there is a two week break before the 2nd and last round of treatments begin. I believe after these that the stem cells are then replaced. The stem cells must be removed because the chemo destroys them and they are necessary to replace bone marrow, etc.
Basically, we will be finished with all treatments by last day of Oct. There's lots I'm leaving out, but just can't remember it all at the moment.

I don't know whether the following will help... but it may (???) be a palliative for your son (or somebody else) !
7 weeks ago, Sylvia's (my wife's) closest niece (Carolyn, aged 61) in London was diagnosed out of the blue with pancreatic cancer. Her counselor told her that there is a substance produced in Israel only which relieves (at least to some extent) the side effects of chemotherapy. It is called "Lifemel Honey" and is apparently some sort of special pure honey plus various other important ingredients.
Whether it REALLY helps (or not) I do not know, but if you Google it, I believe it has been scientifically tested at hospitals etc. I don't guarantee it... but who knows.
We arranged for 2 bottles to be sent to our niece... it is not worth while express airmailing less than 2 bottles at a time.
The only feedback we have had is an email yesterday from Carolyn's husband :-
[size=11]Dear Sylvie & Len, Carolyn has had a couple of weeks off from the chemo and starts again this week (Thursday) for another 3 sessions. Then 2 weeks off and then, hopefully, the final 3 sessions when a new scan will be taken. The chemo makes her feel nauseous (but she hasn't been sick) and also causes problems with her digestion. It also makes her very tired. Strangely, it also gives her a bigger appetite than usual and she's eating things like bacon and eggs! She's taking the LifeMel honey twice a day and feels that it does have some benefit as she's had no problems with a dry mouth which is a common side effect. We'll keep you posted. Luv Tony. .......... p.s. from Carolyn ......... So lovely that you're all thinking of me and rooting for me = I so appreicate it and will call you soon - loads of love to you all xxxxxx It sells for about US$110 for 2 bottles including packing & express airmailing abroad (4 days from Israel to UK) ! P.S. I get NO commission !!

I too have heard there is something they can give to alleviate the nausea of chemo but I can't remember what it is. I do know Daryl had it and it worked for him.
You are all in my thoughts.

Status : Offline | Im so utterly disgusted with health insureance, I cannot believe that they wont cover treatment for him there. Its bad enough going thru such trying times and then to have to worry about that kind of stuff is just shameful. Something really needs to get done in this country about health insurance, I sometimes think it will never get better and find it a very depressing thought. But Thankfully the Dr. is willing to consult to treat your son and it sounds like Randy Jr. is in good hands.
Of course its illegal but I know of many people who have gotten relief from chemo by smoking pot. I remember my sister-in-law was helped quite a bit with it and her Dr. at the time even suggested it, that was over 15 years ago. But I know alot of people who have gone under interferon treatments and alot of them claim its very helpful. Something to consider if it should come to that. I know it might sound rediculous but I personally believe you do what you have to in order to get thru, illegal or not. I pray your son does well and has a complete recovery.
Take care, Helen

Nothing ridiculous about it Helen and I think the real sin is oppressive, self-righteous government officials, so-called media pundits and ignorant busibodies who have the audacity to poke their long, pointy noses into the private medical affairs of total strangers.
NOT making pot legally available to cancer patients whose own qualified physicians recommend it as badly needed relief from extreme pain and suffering is a cruel, disgusting act. People like that need to be introduced to real anguish. If so, they would get over their prudishly pushy, pinch-brained, megalomaniacal moralizing fast.
Cheers, Terry
