Second half of my column is devoted to the short, free FMV game Fate by Numbers.  Not much of a game - poorly written and unclever puzzles, but if you don't mind the huge download it's a way to kill a couple of hours (it's fortunate it can be completed quickly since it's not fully compatible with Windows Vista which meant I couldn't save my progress).

If you're not registered with the Times and don't want to bother just go to bugmenot.com

Thank you! I started to download this a couple of days ago because it looked interesting, but that 1+ gig filesize had me changing my mind and putting it off for another day. The fact that it seemed incredibly slow and the estimated download time was 13+ hours when I have broadband sealed the deal. I figured it was just announced so lots of people were generating traffic and slowing things down. I glad I didn't bother with it as it sounds like I would have been very disappointed with the end result.

although i found it weird that it needed torrent to dload, the upside of that is that it's click'n'forget! it doesn't matter if it's going @3k/s, it stays in the b/g without you knowing it's even there and will eventually dload (mine took about 10h iirc) - resuming automatically if you reboot your pc

as for the game, i haven't read the review, but don't forget that this was, what, a school project or smth? it wasn't meant to be anything groundbreaking nor was it meant to be long

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

Quote from the website

Purpose of the game was to make a FMV-game to satisfy old school adventure gamers
and introduce new players to the genre.  But also to see if it is possible to make this kind
of game using pro-consumer technology, previously only available for big budget (game)
companies.

I guess it's up to individual taste whether it satisfies or not.  True, I suppose it doesn't have the
the best writing or the cleverest of puzzles.  But overall I enjoyed it.  The story was interesting,
the interface was simple with a minor flaw or two.  And actually I thought the acting was pretty
good although not academy award winning.  But the most impressive thing about it is their use
of the blue screen technique (FMV characters on top of computer generated backgrounds).  And
in that respect I thought they did an excellent job.  How many of you have played a freeware
game that does that sort of thing?

It does take a long time to download though (it took me about 12 hrs with a 3Mb dsl line).  And it
does have same technical problems.  I played on XP so I didn't have the save problem mentioned
above.  But the game would mess up my sound system every time I played it.  In other words,
when I quit the game I would have no sound.  And the only way I could restore it was to mess
around with the sound settings in the control panel.

I'm stuck- can anyone help?

Spoiler Alert
I need to make either one of two calls:

1) To make an appointment with Alistar Defense to wave my printout of the picture of my "dead" husband in his face (and if someone can tell me where to zoom in on the terminal shot to get something to print I'd be oh so appreciative)

2) I need to get a taxi so I can leave the tracking bug in it (and if someone can tell me how to put the tracking bug in the battery I'd be oh so appreciative) so that I can break into the
taxicab company and hack their records.

But every place I try to call from all I get is "There's no reason to.".....

Any help will be appreciated.

Actually, from what I recall you're on the wrong track, especially with two.  It's basically a game where when you discover a new clue the thing to do next is pretty obvious.  My guess is you're stuck on this:
Spoiler Alert
At the train station you need to look at the camera, which opens up a new location.
If you've gone to the new location you probably have the photos.  Zoom in on the cab and once it responds to that you should be able to call the cab company, or hack it.  Something like that.

Actually, I've been there and gotten the three stills.  I've found where to go closeup in two out of the three (all but the one that I (Alice) appear in- I can't seem to find where to zoom in to get a printout on that one).

And I've called the cab company- but they wont give me any info.  Thats why I want to book a cab, so I can "accidently" leave the tracking device in it and get the location of the cab company when it returns to base - but the game wont let me call the cab company again to do so.

Spoiler AlertLook at the large sign above Alice in the still shot.  There are two small lights above
that sign.  Zoom in midway between those two lights and you will see someone on the roof
with a sniper rifle who shot you.  Then print a hardcopy photo.  Actually, this information leads
to a dead end (you never get to find out who shot you) so I don't think that photo is necessary
to finish the game.

If you've called the cab company you should know that drivers drive their own cabs and
operate in their own territory.  Access your computer and click the hacktools icon.  Is there
anything to hack there?

The tracking device isn't used in the way you think.  It is used later.

Thanks for the tip, but that's bloody poor game design.

Spoiler Alert
You're not given any indication that suddenly, there's a target in the "hacktools" directory", and barring that you've got no reason to look there. *GRR*

I thought I *should* be able to find something like this, but I never did; good to know it was there after all.
