Has anyone been able to get the third game in the Broken Sword series to run on a PC with Windows Vista? I have tried many different ways including every option in the "Compatablity mode" option in the games short-cut without success.  I just got a brand new Quad Core, DX 10 SLI PC and I want to see how much better the game runs on the new system.

Just to add to my post, I have been able to play the other four games in the series including the two oldest ones (with a bit of tinkering) on a Vista PC. This includes the latest title in the series (BS:4).

Is there a specific error or just it just fail to start? Unless you played the game on a PC that was really old, I doubt you'll see any improvement - the game wasn’t overly demanding and it sure didn't exploit DX10 (IIRC is was only DX8.1).

The game did use Starforce protection (at least the US version did) -- maybe you need to update the drivers for Windows Vista (there was a known issue with the older drivers).

If can still find them at the link below:

Starforce - About Microsoft Windows Vista compatibility

Edit -

I had an odd isuue with this game when I played it (I replaced my LCD mid game - and it didn't like it).  Somewhere in the game directory -- or maybe in the program group, I forget -- there was a Safe Mode link to the game. See if it will start in safe mode.

What?

The game does indeed use Starforce unfortunately. I'm well aware of the problems associated with this form of copy protection. Currently I'm trying to get the game running on a PC running Vista-32 bit but I'm getting a brand new Quad Core state of the art system tomorrow and it runs Vista-64 bit. I will try out those suggestions you mentioned to see if I can get it up and running on either system. I finished the game long ago and I wanted to show a friend the game who is now "putting down his guns" and getting into the more cerebreal adventure game genre. Needless to say I didn't make a very good impression on him when I tried to play this game.

My experience with Vista has been quite good - I've only run into 1 or 2 games that refuse to cooperate.  Tiger Woods 07 is a real bugger – it just doesn’t like Vista.

If I get time tomorrow I'll load it up on my Laptop (the PC with Vista) - and see how far I get.

I did get the game to install, however when I attempted to start it I was warned that there was an error (Starforce protection). Updating the drivers had no apparent affect (It continued to fail with the same error).

I did try running the game in compatibility mode - however Vista wouldn't allow it (I'm guessing it's a Starforce thing - but I could be way off base, but I've never seen Vista refuse)...

Sorry guy - not much help... Maybe someone else has had some success with it.

I just got my new Vista 64-bit Intel Quad System but having all kinds of troubles installing Windows updates, one set just seems to hang and never progresses. Then I get the odd blue screen of death with IRQ conflicts. I called the guy who built my system but he's busy till later in the day tomorrow to come and fix it. This is so annoying  >

So I can't even attempt to install the game to see if it runs in 64-bit mode.

I'm jealous - sounds like your having all the fun -

As an FYI I reinstalled the game again, and I'm nearly 100% sure this is a starforce issue.  At the point where you would normally enter your Key the dialog complains about the OS.  So, it's either Starforce or the program that calling it (I've never had a need to call a starforce routine, so I can't say) - in either case, the game looks like a no go under Vista until someone codes a [s]hack[/s] fix for it.

I've read that the EU version works as it doesn't use Starforce.

Starforce is the offender. Would using a No-CD crack make the game work by bypassig Starforce?

In theory it ought too - but, not on my PC (just get a blank screen).  It is worth a shot though pjlambo -- if you have an issue locating the above mentioned [s]crack[/s] fix, PM one of us.  :

Deleted UserA few weeks ago I tried to run this game again (still on XP) after about 2 years when I first played it. Like most of you above, the game installed without issue but wouldn't start.  The Starforce mini screen appears and I get the 'checking disc"  message but  then nothings happens and I'm instructed to insert correct disc and the process repeats.  I apologize as I'm not very technical about these things but it seems this Starforce is locking my PC from playing again. I'm glad someone had brought this up, I'd love to find a way to play it again! Best of the four IMHO best graphics, best action cuts.

Peruse to the install directory and click the safe mode link - IIRC this is the same thing that happened to me (for different reasons) - but I was able to get the game re-started.

I can't  find the safe mode link, is it on the CD? Sorry to sound stupid.

Nope - it's in the install directory.  I've removed the game but I think the default directory was: C:\Program Files\The Adventure Company\Broken Sword 3...  Switch the Windows Explored view to Details (it makes it easier to find it).

Post their response - I'd be interested in reading it.
