The timeless shores of Seahorse Island lay many miles out from the main-land. A small and isolated place, the islanders have lived a simple life for as long as anybody can remember.

The story begins with Mia waking up in a hospital bed after being found asleep in the woods by the island doctor. She wakes amidst a growing crisis on Seahorse Island. The crops have stopped growing, and the trees and plant-life are mysteriously dying despite an abundance of rain. Furthermore, Mia has no memory of who she is, or where she came from.

Mia then embarks upon a quest to discover who she is, and what is happening to the island. Who is the mysterious “Mr. Clancy” who turns up at the hospital looking for her, and what does he want?

During her adventures, Mia will explore islolated beaches, negotiate treacherous mountain passes, and descend into deep under-water caverns, as well as visit the various towns and villages on the island.

Despite her perilous journey, the toughest challenge Mia will face may prove to be the islanders themselves. As their self-sufficient and insular society finds itself powerless to deal with the unexpected, their darker emotions and predjudices begin to surface.

The game will be completely free to download off the internet, and will be released in three acts seperately. Once the game is complete, we will release all art assets, plug-ins, and tools to be downloadable from CGEmpire, to allow other adventure game enthusiasts to develop their own games using our material.

hehe...

Guess who's doing music for that little gem
!

Some further info for the game:

The game is planned to be released in 2007 (God willing, cause with indie freeware games you never can tell... We are all busy people).

The art is some of the most impressive things I've seen in low resolution, made by captain Binky, while coding monster Lemmy is doing a new module AGX, for AGS engine, to accomodate plenty of things, including my advance needs in music and audio...

So here are some... screenshots:

The town credits...

And a random location...

I won't post any animation but you have to believe me that it is impressive! Especially for an AGS game.

And now to music:

The Forgotten Element

This is track, composed by me, featuring soprano Sofia Zarani. Recorded in 2006, Victory Studios, Athens.

The forgotten Element.

I can feel the tress shedding their leaves
I see their tears fall...
The shadowed vines creep through our mind.
As memories slowly fade and die.

And yet there's no reply...

Dark skies, but still we dream of gleaming trees.
Our thoughts; Sacrifices to a parasite
How could we forget that sight?

When the skies closed their eyes.
I've been waiting to cry.

And yet there's no reply...

The trees of light stand now bare,
their leaves all shed.
bitterness...
Greys and Browns intensified.
Our spirits?
washed with the sterile rain

And yet there's no reply...

And the skies closed their eyes,
I’ve been waiting to cry.

And the skies closed their eyes,
I’ve been waiting to cry.

And the skies closed their eyes,
I’ve been waiting to cry.

Soprano voice by Sofia Zarani
Music, Orchestration, Production by Nikolas
Lyrics By Lemmy and Binky with tiny adaptations by Nikolas
Voice Recordings by Studio Victory, Athens

Me and Sofia, while listening back to the track we recorded                    /    Me and my engineer

Can't help it. I'm a musician, I will post mostly about music

was just wondering if you're talking about freeware games, or commercial games. it surely is nice art, but not nearly close to the "better" low-resolution art i've seen in games.  there's even a few freeware games that look more impressive.   8-)

.

"Voluptuously" stylized or not, the artwork does look very good for a low-res, freeware game. Most are little more than stick figures on very simple backgrounds with no shading or personality. Also, given the obvious quality of the original musical score, this one appears to be head and shoulders above the average title in that category.

Cheers,  Terry

Heh...

percy: I am talking about most games in low res. Not every game of course! Commercial and non commercial. Not to mention, that since I'm working in the game, I've seen plenty of more than any of you have
. Plus the quote "... I've seen in low resolution", simply means that I find them quite well made, according to what I've seen. I would be most interested to see what other examples you have in mind.
honestly. But the fact still remains that we are trying to create a very well made game. And that I can only speak about the audio/music part really.

Terry: Thanks. And thanks for the music comments.

Further facts for the game:

Animation: Mia (the main character) now has diagonal walkcycles as well. For a 2-d game this is again, lots of work really. And she's having more than 400 ( Ithink  :-[) frames... Either way she looks very nice indeed. (and hot  :-[)

BGs: are almost complete as far as I know. Maybe 1-2 missing.

Coding: Now here are some great things going on, which mostly have to do with AGS, the engine used for the game, so there's little reason to descirbe them here. (plus I'm not sure how to go about it
)

Music: Well, one of the things that Lemmy (the coder) has done is to make a system for me to toy with and have adaptive music. Not 100% flexible, but we're trying hard really.

Imagine the following: A piecefull track plays on the back. Evil guy walks in the room. Music changes (not stoping) to a sinister tune. Evil guy leaves room and you have to escape, tune changes to the "escape tune", a nymph talks to you, you hear angelic voices playing with the music. All in sync. You enter the inn and hear the band playing. Leaving the inn and coming back you hear the song still playing, forwarded to however much time you've left the inn. Or if finished they play the next tune, or thank the audience, and so on.

Pretty much this idea.

Enough blessing my beard I think.

some more generic info for the game. As I said the prologue (shown here) is (hopefully) to be released in 2007. The game will come, though in 3 acts to be completed. The 3 acts should move rather faster, since lots of elements (sorry for the pun) can be reused. Same with coding.

And we love what we're doing, which is great, isn't it? doing something you love doing!

I want to like this game. I think the graphics are great (nothing special, very basic, I wouldn't say commercial, it lacks that style and visual design (as well as interestingness) and detail (MI2, Discworld, Beneath the steel Sky,Flight of the Amazon Queen, list goes on)) but it's definitely among the top indy adventures, there is no denying that, falling maybe a little short of games like Apprentice, Legend of the Lost Lagoon, Rise of the Hidden Sun, Fester Mudd. Look, it's great graphcis for an AGS game, and you guys should be proud. But the reason I have trouble liking this game is the way it's promoted, "most impressive" etc, I mean you have the right to be proud and promote you game, but I think it's ignorant and arrogant and self-praising, it turns me off as a follow game maker, I'm sure a lot of other game makers feel the same. I mean you are praising your self and in the same sentence telling other people they aren't up to scratch to you. Let other people tell you how you good you are, if it's good they will and they have, but don't do it yourselves.. It's not that it's a bad game, it surely looks great, but that attitude makes it extremely hard for me to enjoy it, because I am constantly reminded of how amazing you think you are. It pays not to be self-praising when promoting your games. it's just that attitude that makes this game sour for me. (my opinion on graphics has nothing to do with your promotion)

Percy,

If you notice my second post, replying to you mainly, you'll notice that I try to stick to the facts.

I think that I've hit a nerve here

I, personally, as Nikolas, am responsible for this thread, and apart from showing the 2 pics of the studio, and the lyrics from the song, along with the facts, there is no self praising! At all! in the music! If you want to feel weird that I'm mentioning what we're trying to do with the music, I don't know what to propose.

I mean you are praising your self and in the same sentence telling other people they aren't up to scratch to you. Let other people tell you how you good you are, if it's good they will and they have, but don't do it yourselves..

Where exactly are you getting the "...aren't up to scratch to you..."? Because I really don't see it in any of my posts.

You are the one compairing games and coming on with different game names (all of which I want to play, the hidden sun and the LOTLL which are not out), and I've playued Fester mud and the apprentice series, in fact I post in the Herculean effort forum.

But really, all I did was to praise the job of the 2 other people I'm working with, leaving myself out:
Lemmy for doing so much coding and trying the AGX
and Binky for doing such lovely graphics and doing diagonal walkcycles for Mia, etc...

You are correct that maybe I should've done promote wise but note this:

Calling someone ignorant, arrogant, and self-praising feels really bad, insulting, and a personal attack (since you are talking about me). Especially since I've not said anything for the music at all! Only the plain facts.

And just in case by this:
And we love what we're doing, which is great, isn't it? doing something you love doing!

I mean that it's great doing something you love, not that the work we're doing is great!

hey Percy. Just so you know, Nikolas is mainly being complimentary to myself and Binky, not to himself. Binky and I started TFE before Nik came on board, and initially he came on board to do some essentially contract based music for us (though for free, obviously) based on some of his other work we heard . Since then he has become more and more an integral part of the team, but still feels enough separation to feel no problem praising myself and Binky on our abilities, as we would him. We both think he's an awesmoe musician and are ecstatic that he's on the project, and he has since influenced the art / code with his musical direction.

Since Binky and I started the project, I work closely with Binky on a day to day basis, am his flatmate, have known him for years, and since the game is labeled "Lemmy & Binky", I wouldn't feel as comfortable saying how good any of Binky's work is, as he would probably not me, as it may come across like shameless self-promotion...But I have no problems shouting about how cool I think the music is. Nikolas is simply praising the work of other people who have become his colleagues and friends since this project began, and work he has had no direct involvement with (being a musician, not an artist or coder), and I hardly see that as worth something justifying a flaming.

This is not to say that Nikolas is any less a part of the team as we are, quite the contrary... just that in the forum circles we come from (AGS and such) Nik complementing the art or code in a game he's working on would in no way be a problem, as the reverse would be true...

And besides. It's a FREE game. What's wrong with a little shameless self-promotion on something you're not gonna make a bean off?
I could understand some hostility to promotion if we were selling the thing, but we are making purely for the fun of making it, and the hope people will enjoy playing, what's the problem?

Chill Winston!

+ Thanks everyone for their interest!

Interesting thread and I found myself going back and forth on this. At first I couldn't understand what the problem was, then reading into what Percy was saying, I sort of understood, but have to disagree in this instance. Nikolas was just giving his personal opinion when he said the graphics "were some of the most impressive things I've seen." He didn't say they were some of the most impressive ever seen. That would have been a bit far reaching, still his opinion, but a bit of a stretch since there are some (VERY few) that can be classified as better in a low res freeware game.

I do see the point about indies ripping on others in their statements by trying to make theirs stand out, but this just isn't the case. If an indie made a comment about their game having the best graphics compared to the pre-school artwork that other indie games put out, well...that would be a slam.  They way I see it is that if you have to put down other games to make yours look better, then your game probably isn't very good to begin with - none of which was done here, so I don't quite understand the issue.  :-/

Either way, I didn't see it as a slam on other indies and as Terry pointed it out, most freeware games have stick figure drawings in them. This game does indeed have some of the most impressive graphics I've ever seen in a low res freeware game.

Lemmy, Binky and Nickolas On a lighter note...

I was just at your games web site and I really had a good chuckle when viewing the downloads page. http://www.cgempire.com/forgottenelement/downloads.html

Seems like there is more than one Element that is not Forgotten. Good 'job' on [s]those[/s] this game.

Speaking of the music, any chance you will be posting a few samplers on the games web site?

Hmmm... There is the above tune, I posted here, in the music page, but we might consider posting something else as well, a little bit later on... Thanks for your interest.

Nikolas

PS. I hope you mean samples and not samplers, right?
