And here is Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire. They filmed scenes from Damien III here. Click here for more details It was once the richest monastery in England and was destroyed in 1538 along with the rest of them. Rather amusingly these old monasteries were always established by monks who had become dissatisfied with the wealthy lives of ease that developed in these religious houses over time. So a zealot would set off, get his own grant of land, start out really mean and poor and after a couple of hundred years of accepting gifts, collecting taxes from the peasants, end up as rich and corrupt as their originating house. Sad, isn’t it….. And now the pilgrims still come.
[img]http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/8242/yorkfountainsabbey2bl5.jpg[/img]
Steps leading to the monks’ rooms above. The door at left leads into undercroft. [img]http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/733/yorkfountainsabbey1vj7.jpg[/img]
This is the undercroft where the monks would eat and give hospitality to strangers. [img]http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/4382/yorkfountainsabbey3undegr9.jpg[/img]
Main altar. Notice the stalls along the far wall where the monks would sit. It must have all been plastered and painted at one time as remnants of it still remain especially in those parts which still have a roof.

This is the Green Man, a pagan symbol of Nature and rebirth across Europe and Asia. Obviously a sop to the current superstitious beliefs, the church has put him on the outside (because he’s not Christian) but joined him to an angel on the inside. A lot of old churches have such figures. [img]http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/8705/greenmancroppedcm2.jpg[/img]
More info on the green man and a shot of the angel on the indside

THANK YOU CAROLINE! [smiley=clap.gif] :, for all those wonderful pictures and sharing them with us to ge a vicarious enjoyment of your trek through such idyllic and beautiful locations on your trip......
One thing though that I am somewhat at a loss. I looked through them and seems that you forgot one very important, although subtle detail from your pictures, but mind you......I am NOT complaining.......
I just wonder...............where is the.............tip of your finger over the lens? :-? :

Let's see now, following this to its logical conclusion, that would mean that, at one point in time in the history of civilization, peoples indigenous to the land which we now call Italy boarded vessels, crossed the channel and...what's the word I'm looking for...wait, don't tell me...it's on the tip of my tongue...historians use it all the time...CONQUERED--that's it--the people of England.
Isn't that something?

It's a great shame that most of what the Romans built was demolished and the stones used elsewhere by the natives after the Romans left around 470AD. But so many medieval cathedrals and other structures have Roman foundations. The Romans weren't kind to the native Britons you know. One of our greatest heroines is lauded for fighting back.
However, just to satisfy your lust for vicarious ethnic glory, I shall share more [potentially boring] photos.... These are of the largest Roman villa built in England. At least, the largest that they know about. It was only discovered in 1960. They are mosaic floors, some damaged by farmers' ploughs over the years, but still very beautiful. They have erected a roof over them and the floor is now very uneven but the signs explain what rooms had what use. It was a lovely villa with a central courtyard. They have even unearthed children's jewellry.

Thanks for the additional photos, Caroline. I enjoyed them, though I wouldn't say they satisfied my lust (at least not those Roman photos)

Yes SirDave, I've read about her. Courageous enough to fight back against Roman legionnaires, but oddly enough they say she was afraid of the rides at Disneyland.

And you know, even though I had my eyes shut on the Materhorn ride, I still did it. I must get some points for bravery in the presence of extreme fear......
And walking around for two days in Minnie Mouse Ears (fur for the day, sequins for the evening) must entitle me to be named Disney Goddess.....
[img]http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/2946/minnieearsinfrontofislaxu5.jpg[/img]
I didn't wear the ears when we all had lunch with SirDave though - I'd only just dried out from the river rapid ride (which I loved btw and wanted to do again but couldn't).

It's just a shame that I can't wear them anywhere except Disneyland. I rather think they suited me. 8-)

I did take photos of Mark but so far he hasn't given me the okay to post them. And we had lunch with SirDave just after I'd been on the rapid creek ride so I hadn't taken my camera with me (I was still damp) - so no photos of SirDave at all. Sorry.
But it was fun meeting people that I enjoyed chatting with. One day I'd like to meet some more. There was a moment or two of reflection for me when I realised I was not far from where Anne had lived and that Daryl's hometown was just a short drive away - two people that I would have loved to meet.
As for the rest of you.... your turn to get on a plane and suffer the jetlag. I'll fire up the barbie for you, no worries....

In that case Caroline, hire a local police artist and describe the self-proclaimed Myst Sheriff, get him to do a quick sketch and then post it here. As a man of the law, I'm sure SirDave won't mind.
Cheers, Terry

Some clues though. Both Mark and SirDave are taller than me. They're both older than me. And I have more hair than both of them put together.
I have a really neat photo of Mark and my boys enoying themselves on a rollercoaster that I'd like to post.
And as Terry is also one of the Invisible Men on this forum, I hardly think he can demand photos of others. Eh?

What's wrong with the photo I emailed you of the three of you on the dragon? You were even smiling.

It would also appear that you're part of a set of weeping, yellow-green triplets who lost their bodies in a freak amusement park accident.
Frankly, I think you're brave to go on those rides after a tragedy like that Mark.
BTW, which one are you?
And why the heck isn't your picture showing up next to your quote?
(I swear the proper image tags are there in the preview window .)
Cheers, Terry
