I boot up Scratches. I start walking around the house. I click on every painting.... then I got to the west hall on the second floor. There, staring me in the face was the great and mighty Cthulhu emerging from his slumber in his fortress where "acute angles took on the shape of the obtuse". I thought to myself that this game can't get any better.

Then it hit me, we need a straight to earth modern Cthulhu adventure game. just the thought of the insanity and macabre that such a game can portray brings chills up and down my spine. The mythos is full of great material... if only I knew how to make flash games

Naw, I meant an adventure game. I am so disappointed in Dark Corners because of their horrid implementation of guns. However I absolutely loved everything else about that game.
How can you not love the chase scenes like "attack of the fishmen" or the way your character loses his mind and commits suicide if you stare at something messed up for too long?

It definitely wasn't an adventure game - still, I enjoyed it quite a bit.  IIRC Agustin mentioned he was a fan of Cthulhu (don't recall where - probably over at Nucleosys).

What?

The new Sherlock Holmes title, The Awakened, features that aspect if I'm not mistaken.

Also, I've heard some compatability problems and they're probably hard to find, but there were two old adventure games that dealt with the Lovecraftian mythos: Shadow of the Comet and it's semi-sequel, Prisoner of Ice

Ha!  I'm actually working on an article covering all of the games that have either been influenced or based on Lovecraft storeis.  At my current pace, it should be done sometime around 2016.

Call of Cthulu in many ways was a great game and in many other ways the worst game I've ever played.  I've been working on a review of it for ages now, but the review keeps turning into an article.

Did you know that there are at least two bugs that I know of, that were present in the pc version of the game and then were also in the console version even though the console version was relesaed a year later!

Actually, the console version was first.  I believe I read somewhere that the developer folded very soon after its release, so the reason the PC version took so long and seemed so sloppy was because it was just one guy who stayed behind to port it over.  It also led to some problems on the PC version (there is an area or two that are downright impossible to complete if your computer is too fast.)

Which specific Call of Cthulhu are you referring to? I know of at least two (three if you include the one I mentioned above).

What?

I'm talking about the one you have the link to.   I'll tell you a story about this game:  when it first came out I played it night and day for over a week.  Learned how to bypass the bugs and some of the ridicuously hard parts of the game.  Finally gave up when I encountered a game ending bug.  A few weeks later, a local, major newspaper in its holiday edition names Cthulu the best game of the year.  So I write to the guy and ask him in a nice way, "How far into the game did you play?"  He writes back, why are you asking?  So I respond and tell him about the bugs, impossible sequences, etc.  He then writes back and tells that he never even played the game for more than 15 minutes, that he was basing his review on how good it sounded from the instruction booklet and from what little he saw of the game.  He then goes on to tell me that he does not have time to play all of the games that he reviews and that the paper wanted a top 10 list for Christmas so he had to knock one off real quick.  He then asks me not to quote him anywhere regarding what he told me.  No shit.  I still have the emails here.

Kuddles you are right, console version first, then pc.  There was also supposed to be a sequel to this game, but  it was cancelled also.
o you know that many of the people who worked on this game also developed the other buggiest game I've ever played, Simon 3D.

I've always assumed that this was the norm for commercial reviewers - Chuck Osborn (PC Gamer US) is somewhat of an exception. I get the sense that not only does he enjoy Adventure games, but he also plays those he reviews.

You’re right about the impossible sequences – it was a near show stopper for me more than once. Interesting game however, and I did enjoy it, nice atmosphere.

What?

Most, but not all, of the reviewers who review adventure games for magazines and major websites either use walkthroughs provided by the publisher or are supplied with saves from key points in the game so that they don't have to 'waste' their time playing the game

When I used to write strategy guides, under a pseudonym, the company was constantly requesting my latest version of the guide so that they could give it to 'insert name here' to review the game

what some of these reviewers never knew is that it was my guide they were using and that I knew what was going on with their reviews

I assume that Just Adventure + doesn't do this.
Your reviews are the best for adventure games, by and far - I also like how it seems that the games are reviewed on an average system instead of the super gaming machines that mainstream sites use.

A good way to tell if the reviewer in fact played the game they are reviewing is looking at the screenshots. If it is all from basically 1 or 2 "levels" - generally the very beginning and near the end - then they probably did not play the full game. Another way is sometimes it's just plain obvious that they did not play the game for more than 20 minutes (see EGM's review of Kameo: Elements of Power for the Xbox 360).

Although the bugs are bad, it is commendable that members of the team will stay onto a project to at least get it out the door after they stopped getting paid. I had no idea it was one lone programmer who did the PC Port - sure there are bugs but that fellow should be commended for his dedication. I believe something similar happen to Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Anyone played to the end of that one without the fan patches?
