Deleted UserEven if I don't always understand it, I think it's kind of cool when someone's artistic expression is way out of the ordinary. This thing though strikes me as almost too weird.

The late american composer John Cage has created a piece of organ music called Organ2/ASLSP, which is supposed to take 639 years to play! They started performing it one and a half year ago in a medieval church in Halberstadt, Germany, starting with a general pause where all you could hear was the bellows breathing. The first chord was played yesterday if I got it right. Parallell to the performance, the organ in the church is planned to be gradually enhanced over the centuries, growing with the musical piece.

I think it's kind of strange to compose a musical piece that no one is going to be able to hear more than a small fraction of, but that's just me... :

That is, indeed, strange!! I don't get it unless he was just "compelled" to do it. You know, like some artists just have to create or they will explode.

We can be heroes, just for one day.

Deleted UserVal, I know what your talking about. Its like if a chef doesnt cook in one day . Like an addiction or some sort eh?

Is the organ automatic or some sort?....Bizarre

Deleted UserIt's an experimental kind of thing. An attempt to see just how long you can make a piece of music (ASLAP stands for AS Long As Possible). I really don't think they play all the time. They just go there once a month and press a key or something... Famous organ players from around the world may be invited to play a chord now and then. They are apparently going to add more and more pipes to the organ as time progresses, making it able to play the later parts of the piece. And it will actually take until the 2600's until it ends, provided that they haven't stopped playing for some reason.

I wonder what the sheet music looks like...

Deleted UserWhat? Adding more pipes? Gosh! for the love of music.
I can imagine how the music sheet looks like. There are so many notes in it that it more like a scribble and only the composers themselves can read what they're writing. Like the old days of Bach or Chopin.
