Status : Offline | Once in awhile I enjoy a good game of checkers. The games are short and I can kill a few mintues while taking a break from other things. So I hop on the MSN Game Zone to play a quick game. While not the best checkers player in the world, I am pretty good at it and rarely lose. My victories are up past 60 and I've lost around 3 times. This is over the course of almost two years - like I said, I don't play that much.
Now, no matter what is going on through a game, I never quit. Even when I am losing, I still stick with it. If it's obvious that I am definitely going to lose, I STILL stay in there to the last piece. It's called respecting your opponent. They fought for the victory, let them see it through.
My rant... I really hate it when you are playing and things seem to be going pretty even, but as soon as I do a move that gives me a slight upper hand, I am greeting with the "Your opponent has left the game." message.
I just finished two games over here.
The first was against someone that had really put me in a precarious situation. In looking at the setup, I sat here thinking, I am SO screwed. All he has to do is move that one piece on this turn and the dominos will fall with him getting double jumps on me for the next 3 turns. I have lost. His play was perfect, but at that critical moment, he totally botched things up by making a bad move that not only saved me, but allowed me to make single jump in the next move, then a double jump on the move right after which crowned (kinged) me. Bang! "Your opponent has left the game." Son of a...
So I start another game with a new opponent. Pretty even with the little I got his piece, he got mine routine. I saw my opportunity, then took it to gain a slight edge. Bang! "Your opponent has left the game."
I still consider those victories, even though it just doesn't feel the same. :-/

I promise you Ivinia, if we ever play checkers together, I'll sit it out all the way to your victory. You still do the strip-down-to-your-undies dance when you win, like you did as a kid, don't you? 8-)
Of course, you realise if I should win, I may still demand that you dance.....

I tend to stick with online Mahjong. I can't stand playing games with real people online because of stupid stuff like that.
My name is Bethany and I'm the daughter of Gamergal/Michelle.

While the concept of being able to play with anyone in the world is great, just like the forums are great for talking to anyone in the world, there is still that rudeness of people showing a complete disregard for others since you aren't looking them in the eye.
If you sat down with someone to play a game, would you just get up and walk out if they gained a slight lead on you? Likewise, if you had a group of people that you didn't know who were having a conversation about something you weren't interested in, would you just walk up and start going off on them? No, you would ignore it and move on. Yet online, people do it all the time. It's amazing the things people will do and the behaviors they will display when they can remain anonymous.
I guess you can say I'm feeling a bit anti-social over here these last few days.

But I know what you mean, there have been been times when I was playing against somebody and on the verge of a tense victory, there'd be the sound of a door closing and... Player X has left the room. Annoying.
You could gain revenge by having checkers as a mini-game in your next effort, Ivinia. And when a character leaves without finishing a game, you can let the culprit have it with fire and sword. Or at least a sorrowful look and a wagging finger.
