Status : Offline | you tested for viruses but not for spyware i presume? try spy sweeper (http://www.webroot.com/) and counterspy (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/) and see what comes up
if your pc is clean, then maybe your email was harvested somewhere and is now used to send spam
You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

The future ain't what it used to be!

Status : Online | You are not alone Michelle. I've been getting emails from myself too. Only two so far and they were both spam. I use hotmail also. They go directly to my inbox and not my junk folder like the usual spam does. So far it isn't a problem as I just delete them but I'm concerned I might get more, lots more.

Status : Online | Michelle, you are getting spam (just like everyone else with an e-mail address). It's not a virus and it's not spyware and there's probably nothing wrong with your PC. You can't do anything about it, other than finding out who's sending it and paying them a visit with a shotgun.

Or were ictim of a dictionary attack where they just used various combinations of likely sounding addresses until they hit on a valid one.

But that's suicide, because the sender is ME!
Thanks, Aya, for the links. My antivirus is supposed to be an "internet security" package that detects spyware, too, but apparently it isn't doing so well. I religiously run both it, Spyhunter, and Registry Cleaner. I'm running CounterSpy right now and it's already found 3 items.
Good grief! How many programs do I have to buy to keep my pc protected?!?
My name is Bethany and I'm the daughter of Gamergal/Michelle.

No, or at least not unless you have a split personality disorder or something The 'From' field on e-mails is exactly as easy to fake as with snail mail. You can write any return address you want on a letter and drop it off at the nearest mailbox, and e-mail is the same. It was clearly designed by people who weren't sneaky bastards and didn't realize that some others are.
It is possible to find out where an e-mail originated (which server), though not necessarily who really sent it.
Good grief! How many programs do I have to buy to keep my pc protected?!? Do not expect that any amount of anti-virus, anti-spyware, or anti-whatever will protect you from spam. Even if you never ever made your e-mail address publicly available in any way, keep in mind that if just one single person you ever sent e-mail to had spyware-infected computer, the spammers could get hold of your address. What's worse, now that the spammers got hold of your address, you can't take it back. The only way to eliminate spam would be a new e-mail address (not an option for most people). Beyond better spam filters, there's not much you can do.

Thanks for sharing this info! I should try that solution too. Will probably migrate from Norton too, not for security but for performance reasons. This came up in another thread a while ago and there were some good suggestions there. These days there are lots of options and even the free ones are really good.
About the spam, I think it sounds really stupid to have some spyware hijack an email address and then send spam back to that same address, alerting the user that something fishy is going on. Well, all the better for us though I guess... If more people used anti spyware software there would be far less spam, these days it doesn't matter a whole lot if you are well prepared yourself when others aren't and get their emails hijacked all the time.
