Going a bit stir crazy over here and feeling the walls closing in, so I decided to go out and do some window shopping. Not to buy anything mind you, although I have been itching to play a game. I think this is my longest stretch of time in the last 15 years of not playing a game, but time is short and I'm watching my budget.

..but then it happened. Atlantis Evolution and Myst V sitting on the store shelf for $5 each.  I have yet to play a Myst game I liked and usually give up after less than 30 minutes, but hey, at least I'll be able to say I tried all 5 of them now!

Of course I wish everyone liked the Myst games, but I'll give you credit, at least you gave them a try. Too many people say they don't like the Myst games but when pressed admit they've never tried any of them.

Myst is not for everyone.  There is something about the story I didn''t like and of course my favorite games are ones with good stories and lots of inventory to play around with.  I think the reason I like the inventory is because many times I have gotten hints as to what to do next after being stuck for a while. I also like putting it together to make other things.  I also like puzzles that don't make me rack my brain so long I forget what the story is about.

I replayed them when Cyan re-created them with a "different" graphics engine (the first one?) ... at any rate... the story isn't quite connected enough for me.

Perhaps if they had written some books that tied it all together and told the entire story.. that would have helped.

Blizzard put out books for their games and even though the games told the story very well, the books are quite a nice read.

The Myst novels are surprisingly good, allowing for the fact they're based on a game. I didn't expect much out of them, but picked them up being interested in all things Myst. But I enjoyed them a lot, they add a lot of color to the games.

Some games have a rich story to them (some shooters have a partial story.. and sometimes unfortunately get a movie made after them).

The reason comic book movies do so well is because they are nothing but story.

FIVE DOLLARS..... FIVE DOLLARS......!!!!

We never get games that cheap out here.  Bloody hell.

And Myst V is a nice game Ivinia, easier than Myst IV by a long way.  Don't forget to stand on the beach and watch the eclipse.  I love it when it goes dark and you can see the stars.

Atlantis Evolution I struggled with because I HATE stealth sequences.  Got through it in the end though.

Five dollars though.... that's so cruel to someone like me who has to shell out $80 for the Myst games when they come out.  Even Syberia was $50.   >
 Thank goodness I've discovered ebay.

Well, I was kind of looking forward to Atlantis Evolution despite the whole Atlantis thing.  That one lasted about 20 minutes. Knowing that the developers (as well as Kheops) were ex-Cryo, I wanted to see if they had kept the good parts of Cryo, and ditched the bad. After all, that's what Kheops did, right? Well, I was pretty disappointed within the first 5-10 minutes - I felt like I was playing a Cryo game.  It represented all those things I didn't like about Cryo - dead characters that stand there until you click on them, and that constant 'Blam! Smack! Nope. Try it again thing.' I swear I felt like I was in an episode of In Living Color and Homie the Clown kept hitting me saying, "I don't think so...Homie don't play that." and you have to do it over again. So, after dealing with some tram ride timed sequence thing for the third time and having been smacked around several times in other parts, I clicked "Exit Game". I'll probably give it another go sometime in the future, but for now I don't feel the need.

Now Myst V was a bit better. I was able to crank up all the settings on it and what little I have seen has been pretty impressive. I was getting annoyed at the beginning because it seemed like whenever I entered a new area, someone would pop up and give me some speech about some nonsense and delivered those speeches very slowly with long pauses between sentences.  Argh!  I seemed to have hit the point where I am left alone and able to run around freely without anyone disturbing me.  It's still early, but dare I say it? I might actually like this Myst game.  I'm not hooked on any story and I don't find the characters interesting, but I did enjoy running around and manipulating things trying to get things to work. I won't be able to play this very much like I usually do with AGs as I have some pressing deadlines I need to meet, but for now I have been pretty happy with it.
It'll probably be a few days better I get back to it.

I didn't enjoy Atlantis Evolution either - you've described the dull characters perfectly.  I didn't finish the game because of some glitch with a certain puzzle using the keyboard (I looked, and there was no patch for it) - I think it's worth less than $5.00 (IMO)  >

Myst V is a good deal, though!  I bought it at regular price and it was worth every cent!  I love that game (but then again, I'm a huge Myst fan)....

But what kind of a 'try' was it? Was it a real bona fide, Myst-quality, Myst-appropriate TRY or just a leetle, half-hearted, girly-man, try. You know that Ivinia- he could well be just a Myst slacker of the worst kind. Still, there may be hope. He's giving Myst V a try. We'll keep close watch and see just what kind of a Myst V 'try' develops!

The beginning of Atlantis Evolution was ghastly.  The 'Halt, Deviant!' business drove me batty but if you persevere, it stops because he changes clothes and everyone thinks he's one of them.

The games suck, although I liked the mini arcade games we had to play I think they were so far beneath our level to be preposterous.  And the number of timed stealth mazes killed all enjoyment for me.

I was determined to finish the damn thing though and I'm pleased I did stick it out but I won't be playing it again.

And that fellow in Myst V - he keeps following you and popping up to deliver his soliquoys... ignore him.  Just be grateful that you don't have to choose a dialogue option to engage with him....

The drawing tablets are great fun.

You know, I resent the implication that doing ANYTHING in a 'girly' way is in any way inferior to doing things in a 'manly' way.   >

Unless of course, you're referring to reading a map.....

I remember an Atlantis game where you had an alien space ship hovering over your head every step of the way and you died even time you took a step.
Was that this game?   Ivinia
I made it through it but I will never play it again.

I will hand it to Myst for that. At least they didn't do things like that.

Yes, Jalex, that is the one!

It's kind of hard to get into a game when it has done nothing but annoy, frustrate, and in general tick you off for the first 15-20 minutes.

As far as Myst V goes...it's sort of pretty, but I'm not quite blown away by the graphics as some others are - blame that on Oblivion.  I'm kind of on Aya's side of the fence. Lots of running around without too much to do and not much going on. The story is practically non-existant for me and I feel the need to give that lady the tablets when ever I finish it just because they kept telling me not to. It's going to be awhile though because I am knee deep in other more important things, but right now, I'm really not feeling this whole Myst thing. :-/
