Gamaholic-

The Software Society's Ebay seller name is tss. Here's an example of a recent sale of theirs from which you can check their feedback. It's not good at all; the first feedback page is riddled with complaints (also, the sellers responses to the complaints are less than inspiring!):

Oh don't worry Gamaholic, you will get your games..

I have ordered from TSS a few times and always get my games late. They are lazy, ignorant and liars but not scam or fraud.

So, I suggest that you give your parcel little more time to reach you.

Hey, all I need now is another adventure game, okay?

I ordered Lighthouse and I thought I would never find it. They had it and I was playing in a week and I live in the UK, how's that for speed.

I checjked them out - thanks!

I want Lighthouse myself - but I notice there's Lighthouse - and Lighthouse the Dark Being.

The boxes and descriptions look similar - are they the same thing?

I tried Calling Visa to stop my payment to R&R wholesale - but they will only intervene if there are problems further down the line.

It would be a pity if there are - the games they have are ones I've been looking for for YEARS.

I'm quite wary of TSS after reading these posts.
I don't mind paying a bit more if the company is reliable.

CD Access, Interact and DreamCatcher are very reliable.
I get stuff up here in Scotland in 3 days!
I've had stuff take 5 days just from Perth!

Have you tried any of the UK based sites?

I would highly recommend - and have dealt with - the following online retailers:

CD Access - one of our sponsors and we wouldn't use them if not reliable.  Not a huge mega-company, run by a husband/wife team who personally oversee every order.

Software First (I have received orders from this company, based in the UK, in literally 3 days after placing order, plus they have a nice selection of games not available in U.S. - Largo Winch, Exotica Island, etc.)

Playing Games Interactive - some of their prices are high, but they do have hard to get games.

i guess they're doing a great job but how about those shipping costs to Europe? i ordered from them once (QfG Collection Series) and it was either i got the game without the box (NO WAY!) or i had to pay shipping costs that were actually more expensive than the game itself!!!
so what i did is i had it shipped to someone i know in the USA and she sent it to me... but this can't be done all the time... so they MUST do smth about this

Deleted UserYes, I have ordered from R & R Wholesale 4 or 5 times but it has been a while.  I don't remember if they are fast or slow but I do remember that I received my games.  They have an odd slection of old games at what are usually great prices.

I buy most of my games from online sites:

CD Access
Chips and Bits
Amazon.com (on occasion)
GoGamer
Playing Games Interactive (on occasion)
Directly from the publisher/developer

I'm at the point where any kind of feedback such as what you see at 'tss' means that I will NOT buy from them no matter how enticing the game. More than once, I've seen a game on Ebay I was interested in only to find it was a tss sale- I passed! For the life of me, I don't know why this guy doesn't clean up his act- it just doesn't make any sense to keep racking up bad feedback. People don't like leaving bad feedback; they have to be real p-o'd!

There are so many good reliable sellers that life is just too short to put up with the bad eggs.  I am willing to spend as much as $10-20 more buying from a retail outfit like CD Access or PlayingGamesInteractive just to have the peace of mind if a reliable source isn't available on Ebay.  I second Randy's recommendation of these 2 businesses; they've never failed me! And keep in mind that a game may seem to be cheaper on Ebay, but if you figure in the very reasonable shipping costs of the above 2 outfits, you may save by ordering more than one game at once- and they will be new shrinked-wrapped games. So, again, if you shop Ebay, shop informed and carefully.

The future ain't what it used to be!

Yes I believe Lighthouse and Lighthouse the Dark being are one in the same game. I did recieve the game without the box, but I think this is only if you live outside the USA.

I believe TSS to be trustworthy.
o take a moment to check out their posts on the-website-that-can't-be-named -- you will find a most plausible explanation for their shipping delays.  As for Ebay, no, people don't have to be really p'd off to leave negative feedback -- that's the problem.  People are impatient, and afraid they've gotten conned.  More often than not, they jump to incorrect conclusions about the trustworthiness of a seller.  I concur that TSS should address such complaints in a more encouraging manner, and think that perhaps they should include a note in their listings to buyers, explaining the situation.  They should, as well, address any technical issues - such as bounced e-mail - that prove detrimental to their credibility.

In any case, I base my decisions on Ebay feedback only when there is no other source.  In this case, there are other forums (GB, for example) with people - adventure gamers just like us - who've dealt with TSS.  These are sources I'd consider infinitely more reliable.  To date, games not reaching customers in a timely manner is the only complaint I've read about TSS.  If you check out their response to such complaints, you'll see that the circumstances in which this occurs are largely out of their control.  I can't confirm the integrity of their explanation, of course, but given their otherwise positive feedback, I'm inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt.

It's now been a coupla weeks since you placed your order.  I hope you've gotten your games, or at least have a status update by now.  Good luck!

Gah, now i'm so conflicted... tss has the game I want (Fredrick Pohl's Gateway) in a package deal for relatively cheap, but because of this thread I'm having second thoughts.

Gamaholic - Did you ever end up recieving your order? If you don't have it by now then something certainly has gone wrong.

Colin - I've dealt with tss about 8 times now and have gotten my games every time.  True, the last two times have been really slow in getting to me, but JustG has already addressed that area quite well.

JustG:

I love you dearly, but I can't agree with you on TSS. I contend that people do give a lot of thought before giving negative feedback on Ebay because they know that the recipient of the bad feedback is likely to return the bad feedback and that will effect both records. Fr'instance right now, I have absolutely no negative feedback on my Ebay record but if I left negative feedback I would have to accept the fact that I would get it right back. Also, if you look at TSS's response to the negative feedback, it's fairly childish (IMHO).

Finally, I'm not persuaded by their excuses for slow delivery. Even when I've ordered games from Britain and Europe and had to wait longer for them,  the times were still within reason. Also, TSS doesn't charge dirt-cheap shipping charges to excuse such long mailing times.

But, as Bill O'Reilly says 'That's just my opinion, I could be wrong!'

so has anyone ordered from TSS recently and actually received games?  I'm frustrated beyond belief...

The latest....2 weeks ago i wrote yet again, they said they'd trace the package and let me know...heard nothing, so i just wrote yesterday.  Now they say the package was returned undeliverable.  Excuse me, but I order packages all the time, so if it was undeliverable, it was their mistake.  They wrote something about my having to be home to receive it...exCUSE me, but I work from my home, I'm usually here, and I can't be home constantly for the 8 weeks I've been waiting for it.  And since when does media mail need a signature?  I sell things on ebay every week, i charge 5-8 bucks depending on weight for shipping....and i send insured priority mail; shipping takes 2-3 days.  They charged 8 bucks for media mail...and games weigh nothing (oh, and I have received NOTHING).  I wrote back, TRYING to be polite, and requested firmly that they now reship it priority mail, as I have waited long enough.  They've had $90 of my hard earned money now for 2 months.

whew....that's better...sometimes you just gotta rant..

My guess is that TSS is nothing more than one individual trying to run a one-man company but is totally disorganized and unable to handle even the basics of business. Gamaholic, I bet he copied down the wrong address on your game to begin with. He's selling all these games but can't handle keeping track of it all which is inexcusable since I've dealt with a number of one-man outfits that are totally organized and reliable.

What is so complicated about putting a game in a Priority Mail box and sending it off to the right address within 2-3 days of getting the order?

The future ain't what it used to be!

On a more positive note...ordering games from CDAccess.com is a dream...hours after ordering they have shipped, sent an email with tracing info and told me I would have the game by 5pm Tuesday.  They charge $5.95 for fed ex second day.  Some companies know how to do it right!

Right! I just ordered 3 games from CDAccess yesterday (Thur) and they should be here tomorrow (Sat) or Monday by Fedex. Incidentally, I found an interesting price comparison. One of the more popular sellers on Ebay is selling Discworld Noir as a 'VERY VERY RARE!' game for a 'Buy Now' price of $49.94. But CDAccess has the same game (in a DVD case) for $19.95. Go figure!

Also, just ordered 3 games from Software Outlet yesterday (Thur) morning and darn if they didn't arrive by UPS ground this afternoon (Fri)! How about $9.95 for Riddle of Master Lu, Realms of the Haunting $6.95 and Return to Zork $3.95, all in original sealed boxes!

So again, with service and prices like this, why should we accept anything less?

CD Access are always the best when it comes to getting stuff safely and quickly.
I've used them several times.
If I order 5 or 6 games at a time - the Fed ex charge works out at about $5/6 for each game.

I received my 2 games from R&R wholesale yesterday morning -
but I can't get  Kyrandia book three to run no matter what I do.

Strangely - although it looks like an original disc - albeit it might be second hand - it has Kyrandia book two on the disc as well.
Perhaps the original book three disc had Hand of Fate included with it?

Anyway - although R&R didn't have all the games I ordered - they only took just over two weeks by Air-mail -
and that was over the holiday period.

No, it is a demo - complete first chapter of Hand of Fate. I know because I had Malcolm's Revenge borrowed last week. And just last night I finished Hand of Fate which I had to borrow after having played the said demo

I adore the Kyrandia series - and I've played one and two through to the end.

Did you get any 'not enough EMS or XMS memory' messages?

I played one and two no problem - but can't get Malcom's Revenge to run.......

I didn't like the third one nearly as much, but that could be just me.

Did you get any 'not enough EMS or XMS memory' messages?

No, but then again I was playing that on my PC-DOS gaming setup so I wasn't expecting any trouble from that angle
