Status : Online | Loreena is very talented, I enjoy her songs. I have about three of her albums. Four, if you count the one that mysteriously vanished, and later reappeared in my mother's cd case.
I don't much care for techno dance or whatever it's now called. Can't stand rap, and what they call R&B nowadays is awful too. It wasn't what I grew up thinking R&B sounded like, that's for sure. Don't care for pop, and I have a special rage reserved especially for nu-metal.
Now, as for what I do like.. anything that's good, in fact. David Bowie, The Cure, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos to start off with. Spice in some classical, Wagner, Tchaikovski, and the occasional Bethoven. Mainly because they made 'epic' songs, and I love epic. To reflect this, classic rock gods have a part too. But only the really good, progressive ones. Genesis, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Rhapsody, Blind Guardian. And then we get onto the symphonic metal, bands like Dream Theater (my all-time favourate), the occasional Sisters Of Mercy, Pink Floyd, Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds, Lana Lane (please look up some of her songs, she's amazing) and so on. Lots of 80's bands too, of course, especially the synthpop. Finally, pepper this with some Japanese pop, typically soundtrack tunes ('Heart Of Sword' from Rurouni Kenshin, 'Rhythm Emotion' from Gundam Wing, etc) which really is the only even slightly 'techno' songs I enjoy.
And that's pretty much it.

I vowed to despise country 'til the end of my days, but unfortunately I actually like some Whiskeytown, Faith Hill (ok that's borderline pop, but whatever), and Lucinda Williams (a bit folksy at times).
I thought I didn't care for blues, 'til I heard John Lee Hooker. I probably wouldn't make a habit of it, but it's pretty cool on occasion.
I like sweet, melodious voices, regardless of genre. In that category I put Tori Amos, Loreena McKennitt, Sinead O'Connor, Natalie Merchant, Sarah Mclachlan, and Wendy McDowell (local artist), off the top of my head. I also like "rich" voices, with lots of depth to them. In that category I put the likes of Sade, Tony Braxton, Amy Steinberg (local artist) and Fiona Apple, among others.
Rather abashedly, I must admit to enjoying club/dance music, as well as Top40 type stuff. Not Britney or the boy bands, but others for sure. 80s stuff is always good, especially synthpop and new wave stuff Fusion stuff is really cool - I like the middle eastern vocals in Sting's Desert Rose, as well as in that Prodigy song that was popular a few years ago. Emma something-or-other (Shapplin? something like that) does some opera fusion stuff that sounds awesome; I loved that one track on the soundtrack of The 5th Element that was similar.
I listen to and play Indian classical stuff, and get my groove on to contemporary North Indian music as well
I wasn't allowed to listen to the radio growing up, so my exposure to various genres and sub-genres has been somewhat limited. I remember the first two English songs I ever heard: Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time, and Cutting Crew's I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight I've been sort of force-feeding myself "pop culture" over the past 3 or so years so I don't feel so out of the loop all the time.
I love threads like this, because I get to make lists like "Stuff to listen to" and "Stuff to read" and "Stuff to watch" Thanks for starting it, Jonas!

Pink Floyd, Beatles, U2. Roger Waters, Tori Amos, Nick Cave. Beethoven, Bach, Dvorak.
I can't stand rap/techno/britney, otherwise I can enjoy pretty much anything. Glen Miller, Neil Armstrong, blues, whatever. I kinda like Japanese/Chinese pop though I mostly only know it from anime movies and the odd mp3.
Gita: Don't force-feed yourself pop culture. It's not worth it I for instance don't even have a TV and I can't say I miss it. Too much other stuff to do (yeah, stuff's the word!).
On a related note, which adventure game do you guys think has the best music? My favourites are probably GK2 and GK3 (composer Robert Holmes). Makes me wish there was a soundtrack available.

I love music. I can't go a couple of hours without listening to music.
I like just about everything but only love just a few [s]women[/s] groups.
I like Alternative, Blues, Classical, Funk, Heavy, Some Hip Hop, Some House, INternational, Jazz, some Punk, some Rap, Rock, and Vocal.
I LOVE heavy, blues, jazz, rock, old school rap, and vocal. (I've only just began to love blues and jazz.
I'll give you examples: yes gita, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Sugarhill Gang, Sinatra, Fitzgerald, Crosby, Armstrong, Coltrane, Getz.
I CHERRISHLY LOVE heavy and rock. The fundamentals of Rock and heavy definitely come from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Flash flood: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Doors, Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult, AC/DC, the Who, the Cult, GnR, Rush, Danzig... the list is long.
I am infamous amongst my friends for asking, "Have you heard of...?" And in that blank I would insert any number of bands that very few people have ever heard of. However, one band can easily top them all bands and most will say who the hell they are. This band created a legend and a following like its predecessors did but they did it in a different way. It's hard to describe the way but they essentially combined all types that the forerunners from many different genres and styles. They merged Blues with Jazz and Vocal with Punk and a large dose of heavy rock. If you don't have a instrumental ear for music you could still like them but they won't be brilliant to you. This band created what's called the desert rock style of rock n' roll, a new landscape in the distance. This band is Kyuss.
It is pronounced "Kai us." They redefined everything. Kyuss is like a black hole because you can't see them but soon you are just being sucking somewhere. ANd they take everything with them. I could continue to talk about them forever but I am really tired right now because I had two midterms today and have barely gotten sleep for the past two weeks. The most unfortunate thing is that they disbanded a while ago in 1997 because of things. One thing is for certain though, they did it for the music and only the music. They didn't even know how to spell money. Members of Kyuss are spread out in different bands and their talent extremely shows. One example is Queens of the Stone Age, in which two members are currently in.
Couple last things: almost all new music is really bad. There are very few good musicians out there any more. I can't even think of good rock except like  look itsgood2slide) White Stripes and QOTSA. The best R&B I've seen is Alicia Keys (is that how it's spelt?). Eminem and other rap just makes me want to go to the bathroom...actually I do have to go to the bathroom...

Oh man, I was so glad when I graduated. When I was going to the University, I was always hearing older people telling me how University was great. Well, I hated it and I'm soo happy that I have a day job and don't have to go to school anymore. I have much less stress, I get to mess with computers all day and best of all, I'm paid for it.

This always makes me wonder (because I think the same). Am I getting old and this is just normal reaction or is it really true? I have a sneaky suspicion that in this case it really is true and the big labels managed to destroy good music. But if that it's the case, they will have destroyed themselves in the process, which would be a Good Thing.

big labels managed to destroy good music. Exactly...it is all about making money. There are very few labels that don't want to make money and hence find the "real" underground musicians.
Okay I really am going to fall over... Niters...That's pronounced Night + ers not Knit + ers...

As for new music being trash, yes, a lot of it is, especially pretty much everything mainstream. The good stuff comes from indie bands.

Mostly I listen to movie/game soundtracks (not those rubbish "Music inspired by" CD's though). Basically anything that you can play in the background while reading, working etc without it getting in the way.
I do really like stuff like Enya or the "Medieval Babes" though. That kind of celtic, mystical stuff.

Status : Online | I'm not sure exactly where my musical tastes lie. A quick glance through my cd collection reveals Monty Python (really funny), Meatloaf, Sheryl Crowe, Van Morrison, Smashmouth, Dean Martin, Shakira, Dire Straits, Bob Marley, Pink, Matchbox 20, Frank Sinatra, Dr Hook, The Eagles, Queen, and one or two New Zealand bands you probably wont have heard of ( Muttonbirds or Stella* anyone ?) to name a few.
I usually listen to all the top 40 stuff on my favorite radio station. Its good sometimes to have it on in the background when I'm reading, working, playing on the computer.
Coolest song in the world? It has to be ( according to me ) Bobby Darin singing Mack the Knife.
Some people are like a slinky. They might not be good for anything, but its fun to watch them tumble down stairs. &&
