Hi!
I need a little more input for the game I am working on.  The game will consist of more than one 'world' - kind of similar to Myst, Zork Nemesis and probably others.
One of the alpha testers suggested that all tools required for solving puzzles be contained within the same 'world' as the puzzle and not need to be carried from one 'world' to another.  Note: travel between 'worlds' will be relatively easy and tools will be removed from inventory when they are no longer needed.

Thanks,
Anne

Not too sure on that one....might get confusing to have the inventory keep changing. Then again, some people might find that to be an interesting challenge. You would have to keep the "other worlds" down to a manageable number to keep the frustration factor down.

Hmm. Might be confusing, and it might feel strange.
However, if tools can only be used in one particular world, it prevents you from trying tools from another world and becoming frustrated since they don't work.

[that did not make much sense, huh?]

Deleted UserI think that there valid points to doing it either way.  Personally, I would prefer for the "tools" to remain in my inventory until they are used and the game deletes them automatically (because they will never to be used again).

That was the problem with Rama--it was linear gameplay and you kept a large inventory with you--half of which was useless. Otherwise, it was a fun story--even though the ending left more to be desired.

In the case of RAMA I think the problem lay with the inventory's interface - too much scrolling. That problem could possible be fixed by chaning the size of the items, using captions/text, etc etc.

Exactly. I hated that scrolling...looking for the green-red jewel, NOT the red-green jewel....

LOL! The memories ...

Anyway, that could have been improved.

Back to the original question: I think inventory items disappearing could damage the game's sense of unity; it would feel like a platform game where in each new level you lose everything you acquired in the previous level.

Hmmm, maybe I wasn't too clear on that point.  Every inventory item you pick up you will keep regardless of what 'world' you are in - you wouldn't have inventory items appearing and disappearing as you travel from 'world' to 'world'
The only time an inventory item would disappear would be if you used it to solve a puzzle and the game did not require it to be used anywhere else, as mentioned in the RAMA posts, it cuts down on the number of useless pieces of inventory .
