I prefer just calling myself a gamer. It's all encompassing. 8-)

Saying Cryo is now Kheops is like saying LucasArts is now Telltale and completely ignoring Autumn Moon Entertainment or any other company that might be started by an ex-LucasArts employee.

Until Autumn Moon gets Vampyre Story out and achieves some success with it, TellTale will be the one most recognized as ex-Lucas. Atlantis Revolution didn't really rip through the chart, so AIE isn't getting much attention as ex-Cryo. As it stands, currently Kheops has kept closest to the old Cryo formula and improved it, as Tell Tale is doing by grabbing Sam & Max. Heck, Kheops is even keeping the Cryo tradition of putting out game after game after game. I hope Autmn Moon can get their stuff out, but TellTale has had better success with releasing several titles thus far and continuing to grow.

Or, when I say I play computer games, they assume it is an online multi-player type games. I guess puzzle games are more like it, but they don't convey the exploration and discovery that I love about adventures.
My guess would be that people who love solving the puzzles in Myst-like games, would particularly enjoy Sudoku (are you listening Colpet?). Sudoku is now side-by-side with crossword puzzles in most of the major newspapers.
I haven't been hooked yet. Most of my casual gaming time is spend doing jigsaws.

I think part of what draws people to story/character driven games is that they are different from books. You become immersed in both types of stories but with a book, it's a passive experience (if others have a different experience, I'd love to hear it). Whereas in an AG, you are actively immersed in the story. It's the player that makes the story progress. You're trying to figure out how the character would do things (which is not always well done ).
I think I'm a little weird in that I can play all types of games. Those with immersive environments like the Myst series and those that are story/character driven and 3rd person (or 1st person). It depends on my mood. Sometimes I don't feel like interacting with a bunch of other people on the screen and other times I do.
Like you said, and I heartily agree, to each their own and I hope all different types of games continue to get made.
I wish you were closer so you could do my dishes. (just kidding!)

[smiley=offtopic.gif] <---- me
I have lots of jigsaw puzzles but I don't dare leave them out and I don't have a good room to put them in where I can close the doors. My cats would be up there batting the pieces and would probably steal them to play with them.

Well bring them over, put the jigsaws in the bag too. I have a nice big dining table I do mine on. I also do them on computer too, good fun.
As for characters in games, that's the whole point - I don't have patience with their conversation choices because they're always different from mine. I want to be the hero of the game.

Rhem is an excelent game...and is a Riven/Myst clone.
I prefer hidden passages, object manipulation and secret paths...than simply talk to characters...principally, talk to silly and unrael 3D puppets. Love Riven-like solitude.
What's the fun in interrogate characters?
I like to solve puzzles, discover how to open a door, a desk, get out a room, access a bridge, figure out a code and things like that.
Talk to people??? No, thanks! I did and do this..a lot of time in my life.

Thanks for the link. I tried out the install demo. I think Peter's are simpler, just right click to rotate rather than a menu. And I do like to not look at what I'm working on - more of a challenge that way. Try his demo and let me know what you think.

Why don't we all just sit around the campfire and swap manly Myst stories (if there are any men among you 3rd person, story driven, inventory-laden adventure game players)!

The self-appointed Sheriff surveyed the crowd with blurry eyes "hmm.... inventory lovers, the lot of 'em" he snorted, hitching his belt higher so he could swagger properly to the counter.
Downing his shot of Clear Myst Magic Mountain Whiskey in almost one manish gulp, he wiped his lips on the back of his sleeve and, keeping his eye on the silent crowd, slowly turned his empty glass upside down on the counter.
An even deeper hush fell over the room. Such a blatant challenge to physical combat hadn't been issued for ... oh..... since the last time SirDave rode into town brandishing his 10th Anniversary Special Gold Edition of Myst ahead of a Myst-loving posse.
Ivinia retreived his specs from the dusty floor and polished them furiously while the hostility in the room formed a huddle and decided what to do next. Sing cum-by-ahh and toast marshmallows, or smash the furniture and then beat the crap out of the Myst Hippies? The bar man was already hiding the whiskey...

That's what I crave...not more talking to characters or seeing the same kitchen from the same spot from the same angle for the 19th time. That said, I think we're pretty lucky with the games of recent. I have the first Darkfall if anyone wants it....just looking at the box scares the bejesus outta me.

Oops! I'm late for the YesMyst-NoMyst Ritual, so sorry... blame The Sopranos. The first part of season six was released here on DVD five days ago, and it goes without saying that I just had to watch all twelve episodes as soon as possible. What a deep and absolutely wonderful series it is! Only 8 or 9 more episodes to go next year... :'(
Anyway... here's my usual offering to the Ritual: Boy, do I feel blessed that I love ALL different kinds of adventures.
