OK, since this was obviously way too easy (but I think the next one should be a tiny little bit harder!), let's be pedantic - the title is not quite correct.

That's too bad really - you missed it literally just by a few minutes! But there's already another one...

Very impressive Malia! Yep, it's Fernando Poo... and I thought this was an obscure book!

Curious, I think that's somewhere in limbo on my "To be read" pile. Is it worthwhile?

Correct - now the authors' names please...

BTW, Michal: Did you really read that book??

Of course I did. Why?

I read it twice actually, and the second time it even made some sense

Difficult to answer - if you like weird, incredibly complex, absurd and insane books, I'd say yes. Otherwise avoid it

Here's another one, but I don't expect it will survive unanswered for more than a few seconds.

"And what about this contraption for the study of necrotic fermentation, 1789? A fine allusion, really, to the putrid, reeking bastards of the Demiurge. A series of glass tubes that connect two ampules ant lead through a bubble uterus, through spheres and conduits perched on forked fins, to transmit an essence to coils that spill into the void... Balneum Mariae, sublimation of hydrargyrum, mysterium conjunctionis, the Elixir!"

And another one! This time, X is a person.

"After an hour of searching, X realised that the grey time-traveller was no longer at the party. Because most of the guests had left, it had not been a difficult search. Disconsolate, he returned to his locomotive and swung aboard, throwing himself upon the long seat of plush and ermine, but hesitating before he pulled the whistle and set the aircar in motion, for he wanted something to happen to him--a compensation for his disappointment."

I know what x means in the second trivia, and title and author...but this time it wasn't me who read the book, but my brother...So, if you don't think it's fair, I'll let someone else answer this trivia.... :-/

Well, I won't buzz in on either one of these because I had to look them up -- I'll just say the first writer wrote another novel that was a complex and engrossing mystery and a good read, but the second I've not read anything of beyond a short story or two and a book of literary criticism.

Ok, I think it's fair Andromus (BTW, I like the way you think): no "looking up" (I don't care the souce, but "looking up" should be forbidden!), and no brother's answers are accepted.
So, come on, is there any other willing to answer??  :

I don't get this - did your brother tell you what the name/book/author is after he read the excerpt? If not, go ahead and answer. If yes, it's up to you.

I think your question is answered in my previous post (and yes, he read the excerpt, and then remembered the book/x/author, he likes that kind of books
)

So you've got help there huh? That's not fair

But, tell you what - why don't you let your bro answer?

And what about the first excerpt? I'm pretty sure you read the book...

What do you mean, "wasn't going to answer"?  You have to - or someone has - otherwise there's no point to this :

"Foucalt's Pendulum", by Umberto Eco...
Any more questions??  :

Very good, that is the correct answer of course. Sans a little typo or spelling error that had crept in

Anyway since no one else seems to be capable of doing it, you'll probably have to answer the other trivia question as well, even if your brother told you what it was.

Should the next question(s) be harder or easier?

Mmm, I still don't know if this  is fair...
Just one answer (I think Andromus knows the others, anyway): x stands for "Jherek" (doesn't it?
)
Come on Andromus, your turn to reply...
