Same old questions:
1. Where is X?
2. Who is the author and what is the title?

"It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on earth has ever produced the expression "As pretty as an airport." Airports are ugly. Some are very ugly. Some attain a degree of ugliness that can only be the result of a special effort. This ugliness arises because airports are full of people who are tired, cross, and have just discovered that their luggage has landed in X (Xairport is the only known exception to this otherwise infallible rule), and architects have on the whole tried to reflect this in their designs."

OK, let's try something slightly harder:

"Immediately to the east of X is a high grey rock wall. This wall is old, built of rough, square lumps of hewn granite, and it comes from the woods and goes back to the woods once more. There is only one break in the wall; an opening about six feet in width, a little to the north of the village."

No, not the same author. You can say the author's name alright (in fact please do if you know), I suppose InlandAZ just wanted to give others some chance

And yes, the other author's initials are NG.

Here's a tough one. If someone knew the answer off the top of their head, I'd be shocked.

"X is destined to be a very important piece of software. During the next 10 years, millions of programmers and users will utilize this system. From time to time they will come across a feature or limitation and wonder why it's there. The best way for them to understand the overall philosophy of the system will be to read this book".

You know the drill. Except this time, X is obviously not a place but a product.

X is an operating system, I'll grant you as much. But you also need the author and the book.

Maybe I should have said "very famous (or infamous) and very, very rich" - what do you think now

But it's there already... waiting for you in its virgin beauty, with no replies so far...

Well, the quote is from Bill (you know who)...  If I can take from your response that OS/2 is incorrect...  Then I'll go out on a limb and say: X/Windows.

What?

Got disconnected - had to get some dinner going...
Ahh Celery, Carrots and Onion - the holly trinity, and the the beef... Sorry, off track a bit... It was a toss up between Roast and Stew... But, there I go - wandering again...

I did indeed get a thread going - and just for you...  It's a new thread, entitled 64 Bit Processors and Such.

What?

No, I did not say OS/2 was incorrect answer (I was just being deliberately vague)
And yes, it was Bill Gates who wrote that. Now we just need the title of the book... published by Microsoft Press (who else) back in 1988.

Still waiting for the complete answers.

In the meantime here's another quote, which I suspect might prove quite tough. To make it easier again, the quote is fairly long.

"It was Heroes Day in X and as usual the little capital of Zululand was quite unwarrantably gay. Along the streets the jacarandas bloomed unconscionably beside gardens flamboyant with azaleas while from a hundred flagpoles Britons and Boers proclaimed their mutual enmity by flying the Union Jack or the Vierkleur, those emblems of the Boer War which neither side could ever forget. In separate ceremonies across the city the two white communities commemorated ancient victories. At the Anglican Cathedral the Bishop of X reminded his unusually large congregation that their ancestors had preserved freedom from such assorted enemies as Napoleon, President Kruger, the Kaiser and Adolf Hitler. At the Verwoerd Street Dutch Reformed Church the Reverend Schlachbals urged his flock never to forget that the British had invented concentration camps and that twenty-five thousand Boer women and children had been murdered in them. In short Heroes Day provided everyone with an opportunity to forget the present and revive old hatreds. Only the Zulus were forbidden to commemorate the occasion, partly on the grounds that they had no reputable heroes to honour but for the most part because it was felt that their participation would only lead to an increase in racial tension."

Don't know the new quote but I can answer this old one Neil Gaiman one. Wall is the place and Stardust is the title.

And the Douglas Adams book is The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul, I think but I can't remember the airport.

Some people are like a slinky. They might not be good for anything, but its fun to watch them tumble down stairs. &&

Correct!

The title is also right.

A hint about the last author - he is British but spent some time in South Africa (that's kinda obvious).
