Status : Online | A Sherlock Holmes thread can't actually be off topic on an adventure forum, but still, I'll post here
Today I expanded my DVD collection somewhat, and I know some people might find it interesting (pardon me if its been posted before):
Our local MediaMarkt (Netherlands/Germany) now offer the TV series of Sherlock Holmes, which aired in 1954-1955 and starring Ronald Howard/H. Marion Crawford. I had never seen these episodes before and though they are short, they are nice stories. Howard does a nice job as Sherlock and I also rather like the character of Watson in it. There are 8 or 9 DVD's sold seperately, each cost about 3 euro. Too many titles to list, there are about 38/39 episodes in the series. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046642/
On my way to the cash register, I ran across a dvd box entitled "The Sherlock Holmes Box". This one has 5 movies which feature Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. On it are: Dressed to Kill, The Secret Weapon, The Woman in Green, A Study in Scarlet and Terror By Night. Price: a shocking 6 euro.
So these are now sitting next to the dvd box I bought about 2 weeks ago, which is entitled "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes". That is the first season of a series aired in 1984-1985, made by Granada I believe. It has 13 episodes and Sherlock is played by Jeremy Brett. And I must say that I was rather impressed with the way he managed to do it. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086661/
So all you Sherlock lovers, run to the stores. Btw, you did all see the Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot box sets right?

Status : Online | I bought the 3 Miss Marple boxes for my mother, she's the one who got me into those movies I watched them also, and still think they're very enjoyable to watch.
We got 2 types of sets here now, 3 large boxes with 4/5 movies each, and a set which consists of more parts (fewer per box). At the FreeRecordShop in the Netherlands, the large boxes are in a "3 for 15 euro" deal, so you can pick up all 3 for just that low price. Definately worth it. I still need to get them for myself as well

Status : Online | The boxes here are upwards of about $80. I've put them down as birthday/Christmas items because there's no way I'd buy them myself.

Status : Online | The boxsets I meant are from the BBC and look like this: http://www.freerecordshop.com/pages/productview.asp?productid=398125&navid=3 Though this might very well be a specific Dutch cover (apart from the text). 3 boxes, each has 4 movies. So that's 12 in total, the entire series produced by the BBC. These are with Joan Hickson btw, there's also an older one with Margeret Rutherford.
Amazon also lists them, but doesn't sell it themselves, Each box is 15 pounds, about 22 euro. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Agatha-Christies-Marple-REGION-NTSC/dp/B00005NKCL/sr=1-6/qid=1162847660/ref=sr_1_6/203-9830789-8511924?ie=UTF8&s=dvd
If these are the same you're looking for, I just noticed the online shop of FreeRecord also has an international version. I'm not sure if they'll deliver to the US (and for what price), but it might be worth checking out. They list each box for about 10 euro. I'll check though if the subtitles can be turned off, unless you want to learn Dutch ofcourse
Ack, I just checked amazon.com (instead of UK) and they're $35 each! There used to be a time where I ordered from the US because it was cheaper...

| Deleted User | Me too! I see many box purchases in my future.
Off topic: I just picked up the Mega-set (entire series) for The Prisoner and Secret Agent Man (otherwise known outside the UK as Danger Man 2.0, more or less).
I've got my work cut out for me.

Status : Offline | I finally got all my favorite sci-fi sets, and now it's time to look into the mysteries. The trouble is, there are so many I like, including Holmes, Marple, Poirot, and Frost. I started getting the Hetty Wainthrops individually and have all the Campion and Brother Cadfael sets, but it's going to take me quite some time to get all the rest.
