Just been thinking back to the 80's
and remembering the games that were around then. I reckon the best ones for me were from Level 9 - Return to Eden, Worm in Paradise, Collosal Cave (ok, their version...), etc. Really deep games - very hard too. Harder than a lot of people would tollerate these days I reckon.

Shame those guys never made it into PnC era - they would have made an interesting contribution I'm sure. When we started at Revolution we saw them as the main people to beat ;-) Ah well, thats enough nostalgia!

i agree with you... Level 9 was my fav too, but the top for me was Ingrid's Back... damn i loved that girl

i too believe that L9 (as well as Magnetic Scrolls) would have made great pnc games, so yeah i think it's a shame they didn't make it into that era... but on the other hand it's good i didn't watch the downfall to 3d-idiocy, like i did with 3 (yes THREE) of the best imo adventure companies (sierra, lucasarts, adventuresoft)

Ah but they all said the same when PnC replaced that parser stuff. But 3d needs a delicate touch, for sure...

well i personally never said that... i said of course that pnc made advs a bit easier in general, but i liked the transition... which i (and several other adv gamers) can't say about the 3d frenzy... like dimi said in another thread, it's degrading to the adventure gaming... its only purpose was to reach the arcade and the younger audience assuming that adv gamers won't mind, ending up failing that purpose and losing lots of the older fans (me definately included)

Well despite being an older fan, I welcome the (correct) usage of 3d-engines. It certainly adds to the genre.

The problem hasn't been the introduction of 3d, but the lack of public interest and management forgetting about the special needs of adventure gamers. We won't buy yet another quake-like clone of an adventure game, we want a new, well written and worked out game (in other words, an almost completely new game. You could recycle the 3d engine though
).

I loved Knight Orc, and Ingrid games, and of course Lancelot!
But I think personally Magnetic Scrolls game were the best in the world!
Pawn! Guild of Thieves!
I have even visited Magnetic Scrolls once in London trying to get a preview version of their last game, Wonderland.

These game gave you such a huge interactivity and creativity that no other company could achieve since that time.
It is such a shame that the text adventure genre died without using up all its potential. Imagine a text adventure with a parser cabaple understaning virtually all of your sentences!  It would be a great thing to resurrect the genre! But how?

lancelot there are lots of independant developers that make txt advs which are freeware... you can get dozens of those HERE

..... and btw i'd like to clear out a small detail about my views on 3d in adv games... i don't have a problem using 3d models (eg TLJ) within an adv (although my personal preference are always handdrawn gfx)... my problem is the "arcadizing" of the advs, with cursor keys to run around and maybe other keys to jump, crawl, walk etc... and although i do love some great 3d arcade advs (parasite eve
, resident evil) when i want to play an adv i want to play an adv, not a we-wanna-apeal-to-all-audiences hybrid... next thing you know MI5 will be an fps with riddles for god's sake
