Hi.

Was watching Sky News here in the UK this morning which reported from a current exhibition on the history of video games at the Science Museum in London. They also provided a link to a feature on their website which lists the 10 landmark games in the history of the medium (in their opinion). Only one adventure game made the list - let me know if you guessed which one before clicking the link below:

Found it a little disappointing that the writer didn't try to talk up the genre more, especially as he claimed to be a fan :-( Oh well, I suppose we should be grateful that an adventure game made the list at all...

Cheers,

Brian

P.S. Have any forum members been to this exhibition? (I would go but I'm up in Scotland). Would be interested to know how much coverage (if any!) has been given to adventure games...

Mclaugb, you seem surprised that only one adventuregame made it on the top-ten, but if you're talking about true landmark games, the other entries deserve their place on the list. Even the most die-hard adventuregamers probably agree that Pong, Pac-man, Tetris, Wolfenstein and Tomb Raider are games that had major influence on video game development.

The overview of the exhibition on the website of the Science Museum looks well balanced. The games are divided into 'thought games', 'action games' and 'simulation games', including a nice sub-classification for each category. The approach of the Science Museum looks sincere towards every category. And honestly, I can't name a single adventuregame with a greater impact on the gaming world than any of the other games in that top-ten.

I agree that the skynews-writer could be more positive about the point&click-genre, though.

Deleted UserMI1 shouldn't be on this list. It's a great game, but King's Quest 1 or Myst would be more fitting alternatives if we're speaking landmark adventure games. The description hints that this is a personal favorite, and that seems to be the reason it's there.

Sky News Online’s video games expert Darren Turpin looks at all ten games that are on show at the Science Museum in London.

I think he was just reviewing the games that have been chosen to be exhibited at the Science Museum, and not chosen these games himself

I agree that it should have been Myst though. If you ask the average guy on the street to name a point and click game then I'm sure the most common answer would be Myst.

Perhaps the author of the article was thinking of the landmark games that affected the history of the medium in a positive way.

I wouldn't have picked Monkey Island either, as much as I love it. Maniac Mansion was much more of a landmark IMO, being the first 3rd person point & click adventure game in history. I agree with Petter that King's Quest 1 would have made more sense as well, as the first 3rd person AG, period.

Did anyone notice the "Sadly the point-and-click genre is all but dead these days" cliche?  >

indeed maniac mansion is more of a landmark game than mi1... but petter is right, if there's one adventure game to be on that list, that's kq1
