He posted about a game called, "John Saul's Blackstone Chronicles: An Adventure in Terror."
http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/john-sauls-blackstone-chronicles-an-adventure-in-terror

I read the review posted about it on JA, looking for some other impressions (no spoilers please).

It seems right up my alley. One of my all time favorite adventure games was Sanitarium which I loved. I like adventure games taht deal with the whole psychological side of peoples minds and the sanitarium aspect, etc. How would anyone that's played both games compare them?

Also does Blackstone Chronicles run fine on WinXP? I know with Sanitarium i had no problems running it on winXP, and Blackstone was just released in 1998 so I'd assume it should work fairly fine right?

Deleted UserIt did run fine on my XP, I didn't even have to use compatibility mode. But I know there are people who couldn't get it to run.

PS: Blackstone Chronicles is much blacker than Sanitarium. Pitch black and cruel. I think that's what some people call "disturbing".

black, cruel and disturbing... yup, that's blackstone chronicles alright! and a great adventure game too... no probs with xp here either... play it asap!

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

It's psychological terror rather than things jumping out at you - I really enjoyed this game!  I had problems with the video and some choppy audio when I ran it on Windows XP, but I couldn't run Sanitarium on XP either (it would crash after a few minutes of game play) - Luckily, I still have an older computer (Win95) which still runs all the older games...

This game is in my to do pile.  I think I'll move it up the stack to play when I finish Barrow Hill.

Loved this game actaully...just played through it again a couple weeks ago. It does indeed portray some VERY disturbing events....Ran fine on XP for me.

Deleted UserI found it really depressing. Seriously.  At some point, near the end, I put it back on the shelf, didn't feel like playing it anymore. I finished it later, but only because I wanted to know how it ended, so I had a printed WT within arm's reach to get it over as quickly as possible.

I'm not saying it's a bad game. Not at all. Some nice puzzles, good, gloomy graphics and atmosphere.

I enjoyed this one as well. I wish they would have made more of them.  As Betje says, it's a pretty depressing game based on the stories of what went on in there...pretty creepy.

Awesome game, featuring perhaps the best voice acting ever. As an adventure, it's quite different than Sanitarium (better, IMHO) but I think you will love it.

I'm about 1/2 way through Black Stone Chronicles (rough estimate) and it is quite disturbing to read, hear and see what went on in the asylum.

Did things like that really happen?? Gives me the willies just thinking what it must have been like for the sick and for the people who worked there.

My best friend is a doctor, and he informed me that the "treatments" psychiatrists administrated to mental patients in the beginning of the century were indeed very similar to what BC describes. Apparently, experiments had shown that the patients' condition exhibited a temporary improvement when shocked (in various ways, such as hypothermia, ECP etc.) and that lead scientists to believe that shocks would eventually lead to therapy.

The factual information in the museum displays is correct. I wouldn't worry too much about the people who worked there. Some believed in what they did. And working as a nurse or an orderly in an asylum, or a prison for that matter, has never been a high status job. Enough said.

BTW, I don't remember if the museum info tells you, but electroshocks are still used today. In a somewhat more humane way. As a treatment for depression, not schizophrenia anymore. Originally, they were based on the observation that schizophrenia and epilepsy don't go together. So a device was invented to administer an artificial "epileptic" seizure. This destroys numerous brain cells of course, as it does in epilepsy, leading to memory loss, sometimes permanently. Which is probably the reason electroshocks give depressive patients temporary relief.

One of my all time favorites- I scared myself silly with this game- played by myself downstairs in the dark. Then followed it up with Inherent Evil- I think I detoxed with a few Nancy Drew's after that.
But it is an excellent psychological thriller/horror game.

If you can tolerate the 'disturbing' element of the game, it's an absolute must-play game. Excellent !

Without a doubt one of the best horror adventures out there. And charatcers are remarkably written and voiced, which makes them very believable.

Yes , this one is a great game too. I enjoyed it as well.  It ran perfectly for me but I only played it on 98.
