Let's play a little game. Mainly because this is an interesting thought that's been jumping around my head for a bit. But I decided, after playing through the tedious 'Carribean get-into-the-museum' section of Broken Sword 2, to see if anyone else would want to try this.

Okay, this thread should have a SPOILER WARNING. There, that was easy.

Right, you're playing an adventure game and you stop to think how over-complicated something is. For example, in BS2 when you spend the time tying a fish to a bit of rubber cord in order to distract the cat so you can get a ball, to knock the light reflector off the flagpole, to distract the surveyor to let you see the plans.

The idea of this game is to say WHAT WOULD YOU DO if you were the main character in any adventure game? Outline the incident, explain the in-game solution, and then specify how you, in reality, would have solved it.

For this example, I would have just swiped the plans and ran like the wind. No messing around with cats. Just grab and run. And if at any point I truly did need to get the red ball from the cat.. a swift dose of 'fearsome barking like a mad dog' would shoo the nasty fleabag away, without needing to bounce fish for it.

So, what would you do if you were in an Adventure game?

And that's why die-hard FPS'ers have such a hard time with Adventure games. The logical thing to do would be to take the Laser-guided Super-Defluxxer Dehabilitrator Bazooka, blow the surveyor into all his individual "gore points" and take the plans....probably blow the cat away too, just out of spite.....

Gosh! Remind me not to buy BS2 if it involves that degree of (shall I say) unnecessary fussing around.  Anyway, to get on with playing the game. . . . .

In Shivers, every time you use the elevator you have to redo the slider puzzle to get the elevator to work.  This is a bit off the topic, but I (as the character in the game) would have gotten so frustrated that I would have gone home!!

It's the BS you add as a second thought after giving someone the original BS.....  :

This is a design problem. How do you come up with logical stuff for the players to do without making the game too easy? It can be hard sometimes.

The key in the first stage of The Longest Journey. How would YOU get it?

Any takers?

Ok...here's a good example.....

!!!!!SPOILER AHEAD!!!!

In Syberia, playing a particular tune on the church's bell tower causes an automaton on top of a tomb to lower his hat, revealing a lock that, when opened, allows entrance to the tomb. But in the game, there is NO CLUE WHATSOEVER that keys in on the relation between the "tune" and the automaton's actions.
You simply "discover" what happened. My two ways of correcting this:

1. When the bells finish the tune, you hear the screeching of metal-on-metal coming from the direction of the cemetery. A clue that something has been opened or some action has occured closeby. Searching the area would reveal what has changed (if you had searched the area before)--if you didn't search the area before, it wouldn't matter anyway. (You'd just be a little confused as to what that business in the tower was all about... you know it did something...).

2. Put a "receptor" dish next to the automaton that faces the church tower and make it available to jump up there and see it's directional orientation (much like as in the Selentic Age in Myst). AHA! There's some relation between this automaton (you already know that all automatons in this village actually DO something) and the church tower. And it has something to do with sound or light...now go figure it out.

Sorry...posted this before I saw your post above. just got a a copy of TLJ...haven't played it yet...

$5 Pocket Fisherman from the nearest Kmart

...But being able to Buy the answer to a problem from a store would probably suck the fun straight out of the game.

Im playing Bs2 right now and just got past the whole fish/cat/surveyeor/mad ladies ordeal. There is a part in broken sword 2 where nico is trying to get on the ship without getting caught  Now if I was her(this may sound stupid) I would have snuck to the ship picked up the broom and whacked the heads of the security guards.
