Thought the demo was well....bad?

!spoiler warning for the demo, don't read if you haven't played it!

It seems to me to be a game that is using it's fairly decent graphics/cgi to overshadow cliche dialogue and fairly "that just seems out of place" actions.

I finally got around to playing the demo this evening after so many adventure fans have been raving about it, and I just found myself thinking throughout the entire demo "Someone wouldn't say that/do that/that doesn't make sense..."

You arrive to find your fathers office in shambles, glass broken, everything in disarray. You call the police and get told there's nothing they can do, then moments later there's a detective in your fathers office and he talks about how he knows when something "stinks," It just seems so out-there/not at all how something would unfold.

You talk to the other guy who was listening to loud music and he doesn't even leave his room like it doesn't matter that someone basically had broken into the place and taken your father or anything. I mean you'd think after you just told someone what you found their first reaction wouldn't be "gee golly, I'll just stand here in my office until you come back to talk to me" but to you know.....leave and see what you're talking about/get out of there and call the police?

Then the dialogue itself...are adventure games just scarping so hard for ratings they can't have believable dialogue?

"darn" instead of damn and such, it felt like I was watching something on the disney channel. To all of you adventure developers out there, as a Mature adventure fan, realistic dialogue will not hurt your game.

Overall I was just disappointed, the screenshots looked good but, to me at least, it seems to be an adventure game that's shallow on the actual story/characters/gameplay and is riding more on graphics then anything else.

Apparently, Eurogamer wasn't too impressed either. Review here: http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=68181

I can't say any of those things really bothered me. I did find some things a bit strange, like the detective turning up after the police said they couldn't help, but I assumed that was part of the plot. In any case, plot has never been all that important to me in AGs, and this one seems no worse than in most other games I've played recently.

The dialogue isn't that great, but I've certainly seen far, far worse. As for the swearing, I assume it's either an attempt to keep the rating down or just a poor translation; either way, it doesn't particularly matter to me.

Yeah, I agree. Posted something like that when I'd played the demo.... don't remember if it was here, might be at Adventure Gamers. I was surpised when people at AG raved about the demo.

But I bought the German version, I'm going to play it next week, and I expect I'll have a reasonable good time with it. Not many outstanding games around anyway.

I've just finished the game...and it's really not that great. The puzzles very often just don't make any sense and sometimes i just solved them by guessing. The characters try to say something funny about every object they see - which gets a little tedious after a while.
What is good about the game is the story, the gameplay and the graphics. It's a good, solid adventure-game...but nothing more.

I agree about the dialogues, they were badly written, and not well translated, so they sounded even worse. Characters seemed to speak 'proper' English, not only with swearing, but also with making sure to use the right form of the sentence, using the phrase 'would have' a little too much.

Spoiler AlertThe puzzles weren't so bad, the only one that bothered me was the one with the cat. Poor kitty. What's with all the animal abuse in recent adventures?

But the thing that bugged me the most about the demo was the characters. Most of them were cliche, and nearly all of them didn't act like normal people would. The main characters looks looks about 25, but talks like she's 14. No one talks like that, and no one who we should relate to should talk like that. Other than her language she seems a little bland, I hope we get to learn more about her in the game, or it'll be another caseof a bland main character.
Also, the detective was right out of the Big Book of Cliches, suspecting the doughter most of all and saying he'll keep a close eye on her (so she can make sure to look for him, right? Very stealthy).

About the detective...he's an hommage for a famous german actor named Klaus Kinski. I don't know how well known he is outside of germany. He worked a lot with director Werner Herzog and was some kind of german enfant terrible, offending the audience when on stage and he always seems to be furious about something.
Maybe this character will not work in other countrys then germany; Kinski never made it to Hollywood...

Klaus Kinski! Such a terrific actor... I'll never forget his masterful performance in Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes. Read once in an interview that he scared a leading actress so much when playing a scene with her that she burst into tears on the spot. One of those very ugly guys who manage to be extremely sexy.

PS: He's been dead for years, hasn't he... :'(

Yes, Kinski died a couple of years ago. There's a wonderful movie Werner Herzog made in Memoriam for him named 'Mein liebster Feind' what would be in englisch 'My favourite enemie'.
Besides, Kinski's daughter, Nastassja, is an actress, too...She played the female main character in 'Paris, Texas'...and is a real beauty.

Yeah I was not impressed by the demo at all. In fact other than being sorta pretty it was a bust! The voice acting was horrible the gameplay made very little sense. Detectives appeartly are NOT part of the police force. (Actually thinking that something was lost in translation there...think they maybe ment "PI" instead of just detective). I knew I was in trouble when nervous dude was found UNDER the stupid dinosaur in the lobby but evidently "music boy" has his music turned up to the mythical "11" so he didn't notice jack....in Movies its called PLOT HOLES BIG ENOUGH TO DRIVE A TRUCK THROUGH. Granted its only a demo....but still.

I have played the demo of Tunguska. And i found it to be enjoyable and fun.
The puzzles (although a bit too inventory) were logical and made sense.
IMHO, the puzzles also helped move the story along i.e. you need to solve this puzzle so you may get help from someone. Or you need to take this and read that in order for you to advance the plot of the story.

I don't know if the word detective has been translated correctly from the German, but in Europe, generally, a detective is one who is employed by the
Criminal Police (Kriminal Polizei). This force deals with murder cases, solves
various cases of missing persons, etc. etc.

The point & click funtions fairly well as well the graphics also are nice to look upon. I know that when the demo ended, I wanted to rush out and get the game. However due to certain monetay problems --- well you get the picture.

Opps! Guess your right. I was a bit harsh... I will still be playing the game. I always give a final version the benefit of the dought. I was just not that thrilled with the demo.

Oh and as for voice acting....its important to me. When all we have to go on when it comes to connecting to these characters IS the voice acting (cuz ottherwise they just sorta stand there)....well when they sound dumb as posts it can make that connection difficult. Just a personal Pet Peeve

I've been playing the game all day and beginning to think it's a remake of Nibiru!

Seriously, the graphics are very very nicely rendered and the story is interesting, although not as clever as I would prefer (where are the Billy Wilder's of the gaming world?).  The actress who voices the heroine reminds me a lot of an actress friend of mine who's a former Miss Kentucky.  She has the same naive but grounded sound in her voice.

I figure I must be about a third of the way through the game and enjoying it and recommend it.  The best AG i've played since The Black Mirror, which I thought was underrated.

By the by, what's with every female point and click heroine wearing ultra-tight jeans or slips, i.e., this game and Nichole Collard (who I adore) in Broken Sword 3, what's-her-name in Runaway, etc.?

I don't know why every female heroine in an AG game wears tight clothes, jeans etc. but my best GUESS is that maybe the developers hope to attract the attention of possible publishers; I mean they have to put something on the boxcover: Why not then a young attractive female in [censored] clothes.

OH, and maybe the publishers then think: well, maybe this game will appeal to the 14-19 years old boys as well - completely forgetting that the AG community is a bit older than that. [I don't have any documentation for this, it is just my gut feeling].

I also think maybe most modern women would like to look a sgood possible AND get recognition for
using their brains to solve puzzles etc. etc. So this too could be one of the reasons.

I've played the demo - looks like a solid adventure game to me.

There are good reviews of it out there also:

I for one was impressed with the demo.  It got me intrigued enough to warrant its purchase (hopefully at months end).  I'm staying away from reviews so as to keep an open mind about it.

On a related note, I recall downloading the demo for Syberia which was atrociously short and honestly did not pull me in into the plot for there was really nothing there to draw my interest; by all accounts, this would normally be a sign to stay away from the game and yet I bought and enjoyed it for what it was worth.

I'll see about Secret Files...
