Is there a post/FAQ somewhere that describes the complex interrelationships between the members of the JA forum. I read some replies and wonder "what's that response all about?" I'm missing some important context I think.

And having attempted to play it on a GameBoy Advance, I am not surprised they didn't make any more. Too bad they didn't make it for Nintendo DS or something that used a stylus. Trying to play it with directional arrows was *gyaaak*!

I can hardly believe the great information that all of you have supplied.  Thank you a million!

BTW:  I have played Titanic.  Good game.  I gave it away.
umb.  I should have saved it to do again.

I forgot about Noir:  A Shadowy Thriller.  I think that received very good reviews.  I will check some of them out.  I have a used copy from a friend.

Shadow of Destiny:  I remember reading about the game when it was new to the market and it sounded interesting but there was something that stopped me from buying it.  I can't remember what it was.  I need to check that out.

GameBoy - I watched my grandsons play with their GameBoys and was captivated.  Gee, something that I could do in the car (not while driving -  :
.  I bought one and a game.  Unfortunately it was a RPG.  Try as I might I couldn't get into it.  And the little hand held was not a lot of fun for me.  It is here someplace, drawing dust and cobwebs.
 Not my thing.

I think I have a copy of Gateway.  I like text games.  I have one of the original Infocom collections on 3.5 discs.  They play very nicely on one of my old computers.

I have never played any of the Monkey Island games or Sam and Max.  I am not a huge fan of comedy games.  However, I have played Rent A Hero and Stupid Invaders.  Both are decent games, probably better than average.

Silent Hill - over the years I have read the Silent Hill reviews and have been just on the edge of buying one of them.  But the action in the games has made me think better of it.  The stories sound appealing and very scary.

I am still making progress with Secrets of DaVinci.  I continue to find the puzzles logical to the story, moving around in the game is easy,  and the environment is beautiful.  It is worth the playing time.

Titanic is still available here, along with Timelapse.

NOIR is a personal favorite, but requires special treatment. It will only run on non-XP machines. Or on a virtual machine running 95 or 98 on XP.

Thank you for the tips on Noir.  I still have a computer with 95 and one with 98.  I use the 98 often.  The 95 is in the attic but I plan to drag it out soon.  One of them should do the job.  I have a number of older games that are worth playing for the first time or are woth playing again.

I am going to take a look at the site that you suggest to buy Titanic.  Thank you.

Hammerhead Entertainment.  Interesting site.  They have LOTS of Titanic items for sale.  And a decent price on Titanic.  I have a copy of Timelapse.  Played it a long time ago.

I gave away two other games (like a dunce) that I wish I had now.  Both were the old Sherlock games, Serrated Scalpel and Rose Tattoo.  Excellent games.  Better than excellent.  The one exception was the dart game puzzle (in both games).  Painful.  Horrible.  Took me a million times to get through them.

Does anyone have a copy that they would like to get rid of - either game?

And I'm playing Timelapse right now. If you haven't played Timelapse, Harriet, you'll love it if you like First-Person point 'n' clickers. And it was really revolutionary for 1996 - you can either use the mouse or the keyboard. The menu option screen is also way ahead of it's time, with options for gamma adjustment - among other options!

Great puzzles, very nice scenery for a game that is 10 years old. Oh, it also has some Full Motion Videos, including a very nice filmed intro to the game - played by real actors.

In fact, since you're getting Timelapse bundled with Titanic, you may want to consider playing Timelapse first, and save Titanic for later.

I think I would if I got the set of two together.

Sigh. Five [s]seconds[/s] minutes of separation caused me to rattle on and on about Timelapse unnecessarily.

You've played it. :

98 will be fine. Just prepare yourself for BIG ICONS and FEW COLORS. NOIR likes 640x480 and 256.

I am almost positive that I still have Timelapse.  I will look in my game locker to be sure.  BTW,  you can rattlle on and on about it.

If I install Noir through MSDOS in WIN98 will I still have the big icons and few colors? I installed The Gene Machine that way and it would only play slightly past the introduction.

Mark, have you ever ordered from Hammerhead?  Are they reliable?  I am going to take a look at Chips and Bits, CD Access, and Amazon to see if I can find a copy of Titanic.

I asked my original question about games with good stories so that I could locate a few excellent ones to occupy myself with.  I have a minor medical procedure coming up soon and I plan to recover with games and books.  This thread is filled with great  info.  I hardly know how to put things in priority order.

Chips & Bits, CD Access, Amazon do NOT have Titanic.  So I guess I will give a try at Hammerhead.

No, sorry, I haven't. I've only bought shipped games from the JA Store, eBay, or direct order from independent developers. The rest I've bought from local retailers.

And I've never purchased a game through Amazon, Chip & Bits, Hammerhead, or CD Access.

Just to be clear in terms of story it's Gateway 2: Homeworld I'm recommending.  The first Gateway is a very good game, with a good story, but I thought the sequel just had an incredible story.

Well, maybe you're not a big fan of comedy games because you play ones like Stupid Invaders.  That's not near the best of the breed.
I don't know Rent A Hero).

Oh, and to the person who said The Last Express isn't big on story, allow me to say, "huh?"  It's has one of the top 5 stories of any adventure games I've ever played.  I might even rank it number 1 for story.

Impossible! One cannot rattle on about Timelapse unnecessarily. All Timelapse rattling is absolutely vital. Great game.

Oh, I had no problems ordering from Hammerhead Studios either. I'd say give them a try, Harriet.

Can't believe you said that! TLE is very big on story. Plus ministories of individual travellers.

Besides, Harriet was talking about DaVinci, not TLE.

Just saying, because it seems to be a rip-off of the movie I put in spoilers. Sure, almost anything might be inspired by something. Anyway, I hope I didn't get that all wrong in memory...
Plus, to me, story is not the same as plot. So, I guess what I'm saying is: story is slightly taken from that movie and plot is probably completely original

But Harriet was indeed not talking about TLE, I was pretty confused there.  :

Movie...?? What movie, Elfstone? TLE is not based on any movie.

I think what we have here is a classic case of talking at cross-purposes.

Second page, at the top. As I said, I might have forgotten the details about TLE's plot/story
, but I felt reminded of it right away.
But, as I also said up there, it might be a story somebody has written a long time ago and they both ripped it off.
Or it's just me being wrong and I should replay TLE some time soon.

In hundred years when I have finished everything else I still need to play...

Mark and all,

CD Access is a very good site.  They stock some current games and LOTS of older games.  Their prices are decent and their service has been excellent for me.  I have ordered from the JA game site, good service, prompt, no problems.  Amazon.com is also reliable.  They offer new and used games.  Prices are good there.  I'll let you know about Hammerhead after I give them a try.

Elfstone, I sort of consider story/plot to be very closly related.  Why do you view them as separate characteristics?  What am I missing?

Actually there was a film about the Titanic but VERY different from the game.  I have never seen the movie but I believe that it was a disaster/love story to be very simple about it.  The game focused on a fictional secret agent type person who was on the Titanic.

Interesting.  I always use them pretty much interchangeably.  How do you define story versus plot?

I was taught it that way in school (I think) by an English teacher.
story - what the medium is about, what its goal is
plot - how the medium gets the story across, the way it is told

You could also say that a story is good, but the execution (plot) is not well done.

In the world of film I find it harder to define, though. Plot is everything from cinematography to editing. But what exactly is "story"? The script and the writing? I'd say that could be "plot", too. Probably a summary of a movie best describes the pure "story". Anyway, story is faster to describe than plot, simply because the plot is everything while story is just the idea of something.

I hope that was interesting.
