Do you know what is the most played bit of music in the world? Well, it depends on how you see it, but a likely candidate comes from an unexpected place:

The 1969 vinyl single "Color Him Father" by a funk/soul band called The Winstons would have been totally unknown today if it wasn't for a short drum break on the flip side, in a song called "Amen, Brother". Commonly known as "The Amen Break", the 5.20 sample of drums were picked up by DJ's in the 80's and in the 90's when the jungle genre emerged, it was used in virtually all jungle tracks. Jungle evolved into drum and bass, in which The Amen Break can be heard in probably 9 out of 10 songs, usually cut up and rearranged into new interesting variations. It's a fair guess that drum and bass had not existed if it wasn't for The Amen Break.

The drum break has also been used in hip hop, rock and various commercials, TV shows, movies and computer games. For example, it's in the title track to the movie Pi and it's the drums you hear in the title theme to the animated show Futurama. Listen closely during commercials or TV shows and chances are good that you'll catch it used somewhere.
It's probably the most used sample in popular music, and many drummers are taught to play it early on in their training.

You can find a sound clip of it here.

I have no memory of ever hearing that particular drum sequence before.

Hmmm...I certainly have heard this before, but you can easily do a variation on it and that's probably what you hear these days. It's probably too far back for me to have heard that original thing often enough.
I have several examples in mind that sound like that...I can't name them at the moment...
And thanks, this is sure driving me crazy now...

Oh, I got one right here!
There's a piece on the Samurai Champloo (successor anime to Cowboy Bebop) which has something very similar to this. It's called Nightshift by Force of Nature, Nujabe & Fat Jon. A lot of the soundtrack is drumming in all forms, getting very repetitive, but can be calming. Probably Set it off from the same soundtrack uses the same background.

And while searching for this I found another one in the soundtrack which uses this in the background, but it's hard to recognise, unless you are looking for it. This one is definite, though. It's the exact same thing, just more slowly, in the drums. That is called The Million Way Of Drum.

Ok, it's quite likely that an album consisting of a whole lotta drumming uses this sample in variations all over the place. I had something else in mind, but I can't figure that out. And after listening to all this drum and bass again I get confused between those pieces, which is further evidence that they sound alike.  :

Seems to me it would be tough to determine the most played piece of music. Perhaps it would be easier to do a possible top 20. If so, I would throw in the 'victory' notes (used in WW2) of the opening of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony: Bup, Bup, Bup, Bah-h-h!

Or maybe Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Dah.... [smiley=music.gif]

Or maybe the opening notes of the first track of Paris Hilton's new album.....

The future ain't what it used to be!

Deleted UserA popular candidate for the most played song is White Christmas, the version performed by Bing Crosby. Maybe it's true if you are talking about popular music and a full song.

As for The Amen Break, it's not always instantly recognizable and sometimes not the sampled original. But most importantly, drum and bass musicians and others have cut it up and rearranged the beats in countless variations to get new drum loops. But the samples are the same. It can also be played back at different speeds, like in the Futurama theme (slower).

If you have the video game Ratchet and Clank you'll find it there too btw...

I found it fun to find out about the evolution and connections of electronic music. With samples.

Deleted UserYeah, that site is VERY cool!
I've seen it before, pointed to me by someone here in this forum I believe.

Incidentally, click on the Oldskool, Jungle, Drum N Bass, Jazzstep and subsequent genres presented on that site and listen for bits and pieces of The Amen Break.

Here is something interesting that I recently learned about music.

The singer Petula Clark had a huge hit song in the late 60's entitled "This Is My Song".  The songwriter was a neighbor who asked her to sing it after learning that the person who he/she intended to sing the song, Al Jolsen, had been dead for more than 15 years.

Who was that songwriter?  Here is a hint:  He/she is mentioned in one of the current threads in this Off-Topic Forum.  No googling, please.

You got it, Chris.  The world of academia has served you well.  I will tinker with the karma to cause something good to happen to you.

There!  It's done.  You will get laid this weekend.

Or perhaps you will get stinking drunk and puke all over the term paper you are working on.  I'm not very good at this sort of thing.  :-/

Wow.  Well, whomever is living now in what used to be your dorm room is going to be one lucky guy.
