I have put my away boxing gloves to see if we have here the real hardcore fanatics of the fine arts of adventure or just the casual gamer with too much free time on his/her hand.
What is one of the most important factors to create a certain mood or ambience? Music. Ever looked at Jaws without the sound turned on. Not very scary anymore. Lord of the Rings epic battles without that dramatic music. Not very epic anymore. A romantic scene without those violins. Like watching your sister make out.  Music is one of the most important factors in a game and one of the most underrated. It doesn't have to be something intricate or complicated but the theme has to fit the scene perfectly.
Two examples of games that have used music perfectly:
Monkey Island 2: very simple caribean music that works out perfectly with the setting of the game. Makes me want to put on my shorts and grow myself some rastas.
Fahrenheit: excellent use of music. One of my favorites.

Not just because the themes fit the games perfectly, but also because those games use music in an intelligent way, if you know what I mean.  Sparingly, so it has a real effect on the player. No looping. No irritating background music but music that underlines the mood of the situation at hand. Unlike Syberia for instance, with its muzak and recurring crescendos that don't mean anything.

I loved the music in the X series of games, the last one being X3: The Return. Its very ambient instrumental space faring music. Made a CD of it and play it in my car.

Curse of Monkey Island - Very fitting to the atmosphere, makes you feel like you are there. It can also be pretty funny at times. It really upgraded the game.

Grim Fandango - Where would GF be without the jazzy soundtrack?
And the fact that the game sometimes used completely different music when it fit made it even better.

Post Mortem - Playing this game, I wished they had written more music for it, there are only about 4 or 5 tracks, but most of them fit perfectly to the situation.

Discworld series - The music in these games creates a magical and mysterious feel in nearly every location.
It's also interesting to see that though most of the music is reused in all 3 games, in each game it sounds different - especially in Discworld Noir where even though there's a mellow, jazzy soundtrack, you can still recognize music from the first 2 cartoony games.

These are the ones I remember most

Gabriel Knight 2 (the other of the series also, but I loved mainly this one, specially the lost opera)

Grim Fandango

Faust : Seven games of the soul (very good combination of musics that can trigger different emotions on you)

Curse of Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, and The Neverhood. All very evocative, setting and fitting the mood of their respective games exactly, and I've enjoyed listening to their soundtracks outside of the game as well.

Broken Sword 1 gets an honorable mention for its soaring main theme.

Portions of the soundtracks from the various Myst games have stood out to me, but I'd have to play the games, hear them again to be more specific.

I've listened to classical & pop music most of my life and I admire anyone who can compose an original, catchy melody and arrangement. With that in mind, I think Syberia ranks among the top pieces of music in an AG. In fact, the main theme that plays through out much of the game is so good that I was a little disappointed more wasn't done with it.

The future ain't what it used to be!

Ireland theme on Atlantis 2 is really beautifull.
GK2 have a nice soundtrack
Riven chords are very enigmatic.
Obviously, the music on Zork Nemesis is superb.

King's Quest 6
The Longest Journey
Grim Fandango (already mentioned)
The Colonel's Bequest*

*No background music unless it's a cutscene.  Just sound effects as you wander about the mansion and its grouds.

Alone.

With no escape.

All around you, people are being murdered.

Except, you see no murderer, so it must be somebody else on the island.

Or is it?

Which person could it be?

Will they turn on you when you turn your back? [smiley=shudder.gif]

Oh, sorry, just setting the mood for the game.

What? No one's mentioned The Dig yet?

There are so many games with great soundtracks.
I've been listening to mp3's and ogg's of old Sierra games from the Quest Studios website. Even if you played these old games, you might not have appreciated the music the first time you heard it unless you had a Roland MT-32 synth (or something comparable) to play the midis.

.

For most effective music in any game I've played to date, Fallout 1 & 2.

The audio is simply superb in every way with a wide assortment of truly great SFX, limited but world class voice acting and sparse but dead-on-target, mood setting music all the way through. It perfectly emotes the ultra lonely, isolated feeling of traveling through a strange post apocalyptic nuclear wasteland but also has equally wonderful atmospere-inducing tunes to punctuate tense combat, exciting adventure, free roaming across the plains, and to denote both whimsical and dramatic moments.

Sound is such a big part of those games and despite being created for older systems a decade ago, it all still works amazingly well today.

Cheers,  Terry

Maybe an easy choice because the game was written for the music rather than the music for the game.
The introductionary scene where Charlotte Rampling talks against a backgound of music is probably my favourite scene to listen to of any adventure game. To bad the game itself is very mediocre.

Grim Fandango. Forgot about that one. One of the best adventures of all time, the voices were perfect. GK 2 was also well done if you like the more classical soundtrack.

You know, I have never taken too much notice of the music in games!  If it is irritating I turn the sound down. Can't say that I would rush out and buy a CD of the music I have heard while playing an adventure game.  [smiley=shrug.gif]

Shame on you! As punishment you have to buy yourself a Britney and Christina cd and listen to it for 8 hours straight. That will teach you what is really irritating.

And here I have several game music tracks (a few hours worth) downloaded and on my iPod.

I find that listening to the songs by themselves makes me appreciate the game even more.

Syberia, Return to Mysteious Island, and TLJ top my list.

I have the full sountrack of TLJ on my hard drive and listen to it while I'm working on other stuff. Every time I hear it I want to play the game again.

Right here!

I've been sitting in my computer chair, visiting JustAdventure, waiting for you to come along.

That was what you wanted to hear, right?

The Dig does have some good music, although I didn't think to list it because I haven't played it yet. But I was impressed by the selections from it on the LucasArts anniversary soundtrack.

You can hear more at the Mixnmojo  website. After repeated efforts, I was eventually able to get a used version of the Dig soundtrack on ebay. But Mixnmojo actually has both versions - the tracks from the soundtrack CD and the tracks from the game (which are a little different). They also have tracks from LucasArts games that never had a soundtrack CD at all.
