October has been set for the release of the latest controversial game from Rockstar, Bully.  There also the possiblity of it getting a Teen rating instead of a Mature.  I worry that kids and teens may get the idea to imitate and become bullies themselves by doing the things they see in the game.  Luckily I seen on a news story a number of states are looking into or already passed anti-bullying laws which I'm glad to see.

There was an article about this in today's NY Times.  The article took the position that concerns that the game would have a negative effect on kids were misguided.  Apparently, the character you play in the game is a kid who must stand up to bullies, not a kid who is a bully.  The protagonist can be mischievious and a prankster but if he becomes cruel or sadistic, the player is punished.  Sounds interesting.

I like the idea of the game, but it doesn't look too horribly exciting yet.

I need to see a bit more footage before I decide.

HI

IMHO, NY Times (& others) need to understand that video games, regardless of genre, is like
movies or books. And a kid in a movie who stands up to bullies in school, will be applauded.
The same goes for a main character in a book who also stands up the bullies in school - and
teaches the bullies a lesson.

But, for some reason, if this happens in a videogame, parents & teachers etc. are very worried.
I don't really know why, but my guess would be something like this: *This videogame...
teaches our kids that it is OK to take revenge...cheat.... or something other than we parents do NOT
like.*

IMHO, parents shouldn't be too concerned. It is, IMO, better that people hits pixelated bullies than bullies in real life. I know also for a fact that many people who are really nice in their everyday life,
in games like Oblivion etc. do enjoy exploring the(ir) dark side.

Also, I don't believe that a videogame would or could inspire someone to be a bully. Bullies in school are a (sad
) fact of life - and need to be dealt by the school's staff. The point is this: Bullies in school exists - and so Rockstar has made a game about bullies and how to deal with these.

And from my point, is is the real bullies, one should be worried about, not the pixelated ones.

Deleted UserJust read some previews and saw first screenshots and I must say this is a game that interests me because it features a very interesting and new setting. You feel like you're in a Hogwarts or some school of this sort. If the game has enough adventure (story) elements it might become really cool and not just an action game.

Why don't they make a Harry Potter Hogwarts school simulator?  Ogre's idea of Hogwarts would make a great game.  I wouldn't mind playing such a game.  But who owns the rights for the Harry Potter video games?  I think it's Electronic Arts.

"Canis Canem Edit" or Bully as it is called in the US hopefully will have more story elements. If it would be like a Shenmue at a residential school it would be really cool but I'm afraid most of the time the player has to fight or do mini games.
It also doesn't have to be Hogwarts, I would love a game with a good background story playing at any (virtual) boarding school since I think the setting would make for many good puzzles and quests.
