Topic: Playing Myst V

Deleted UserFinally! I bought this back around the time it came out, but let it sit until last night. After starting, I played it a few hours then thought about dinner, but it was midnight already... just like the old days.

I just hope that dialog dies down now that I have all of Yeesha's pages.

Don't you just hate the kind of woman Yeesha turned out to be?  Yuk.  I didn't read or listen to all her moaning.  It served no purpose except to irritate me.  I did scan the pages for clues and that was enough.

The rest of the game is pure fun.
on't forget to pause and enjoy the night time scenes.  I loved them.

Now Caroline...  Yeesha certainly didn't become what you might hope, but think of it. She had a certifiably nutty, single focus, father; two psychotic brothers (One of whom tried to kill her); a mother who focused on supporting her husband rather than defending her children; and a friendless, lonely, childhood.  It's no wonder she was such a mess.  At least she was [sort of] saved at the end.   Give the woeful child/woman a break.

Thanks. I appreciate the spoiler warning. Not that it matters, like this is a thread about someone who JUST STARTED playing the game or anything like that.

Wow.

:-[  OK, I surrender.  This is rapidly becoming one of the most contentious game discussion sites on the web and I guess I'll just read it from now on.  No more writing.  As to Not A Speck Of Cereal, I apologize if I have insulted, or inconvenieced you in any way. Please know that since I have just completed MYST V for about the tenth time, I can tell you that all the information in my post was gleaned from MYST I, MYST III. MYST IV, and from a few scenes in URU.  Enjoy your game and know that there will be no further "Spoilers" from a well-intentioned,  but clearly inept, me.  Sorry I caused you pain.  :'(

Poor Sheddie.....

I have to agree about Yeesha coming from the most dysfunctional family in the Universe....   But I absolutely HATE unnecessary reading in games.

I know what you mean about the attention span.  I think it's impatience more than anything else.

I've gotta start playing the game and stop reading about it.  Nothing's going to be a new surprise for me by the time I get there.  Should I be setting aside an entire weekend for some sort of gaming marathon, then?

This is a Myst game we're talking about.  The Myst series is the only series where I will happily buy a strategy guide to get through the game for the purposes of playing through the game now and in the future.  I still like the game very much, just can't figure out those darn puzzles.

I also tend to approach a new Myst game in the following fashion (amount of time approximate):

Susan sits down and loads up game
"All right!  New Myst game!  Let's see what that crazy Atrus and his family is up to this time.  Whoo!  We're going to have so much fun with this!  And this time we won't buy the strategy guide."

5 minutes later
"Wow ~ that intro was so neat!  They've really outdone themselves with the graphics this time!  Ooh, OK, so let's wander around and see what we can find."

20 minutes after that
"Let's see, I've wandered around everywhere and taken note of what needs to be read.  Time to read all those journals and papers."

An hour later
"Man, that was a lot of reading!  I wonder if all those diagrams will have some importance in the future."

20 minutes later
"I've now wandered around everywhere and have seen all there is to see.  Guess I'll start fiddling with these buttons."

15 minutes later
"I'm getting nowhere with this.  Time to move on to the next one."

15 minutes later
"I'm getting nowhere with this.  Time to move on to the next one."

15 minutes later
"I'm getting nowhere with this.  Time to move on to the next one."

15 minutes later
"I'm getting nowhere with this.  Time to move on to the next one.  Except, I have a feeling that one will be the same.  Didn't one of those diagrams show this thing?  *consults notes*  OK, that still doesn't make any sense.  Better check online for a hint."

5 minutes later
"Ummm, yeah, that description of clues to solve the puzzle took up the whole screen.  Better get some hints for the next puzzle while I'm online.  Hmmm, that's taking up my whole screen, too.  How the heck was I supposed to figure that out from a few pictures?!  Better check a walkthrough to make sure I have everything."

5 minutes later
"Wait ... what?  I should have done that at the beginning?  Now I have to walk all the way over there, then there, then all the way back again.  Where the heck did THAT diagram come from?  Yeesha's notes?  Yeesha never made any notes.  Who is this 'friend' Atrus keeps writing about?  They sound shady.  I can't keep all of this straight!  No way am I making all these comments, or wasting paper to print out the walkthrough (what kind of person prints out a walkthrough, anyway?) ... that does it: I'm buying the strategy guide!"

Next day ... Susan sits down to play Myst game with strategy guide in her lap
"Yay!  I'm playing a Myst game!"

Well- I usually just get lost for an hour then finally find my first puzzle- spend 1/2 an hour trying to solve aforementioned puzzle then ask for help-  [smiley=doh.gif]

Deleted UserHeh, Susan, my experience is much like that. I TRY, fail, look for hints, slap my forehead when I realize what's going on, then move on.

I have to say, this one is making more sense to me though. I'm able to do more with fewer hints. I haven't been able to finish any age without at least one hint. It depends on how tough my day went (which involves troubleshooting), that determines my patience vs getting back to being emmersed in the game.

But I'm okay with it taking a long time, more than a weekend to be sure!

Chris

That is no place for doing those kinds of things.

In the name of all that is good and decent, please take that stuff back to the privacy of your own Relto. >

I don't Relto is that romantic, even sitting in the jaccuzzi outside because that water's damn cold.

Besides, last time I tried that in Relto, my hot date burnt his hand on the hearth, I brought him inside to treat it and he fell over those sparkly balls, broke his nose on the step by the books, splattered blood all over my new bonus frock in the wardrobe and left early...... >

So, my game.  My p.c.  My fantasy.   You go do it your own way.  Snuggle up to Bobo, perhaps.....

So you got the hots for Escher, eh?

Deleted UserEither Myst V is easier than the rest or I got smarter. With only one hint request (and I was being lazy there) and perhaps one walkthough consultation per age, I finished this game faster than any other Myst game I've played.

I ended last nights game after getting the 4 tablets thinking [spoiler midtext]that there would be one last age with the major tablet, but I was mere minutes from the end. I sort of wish there was that last 'epilog' age.
