Found this article on my main video game news group.  I can under stand this not being tolerated by the game companies by those who use cheat devices to obtain game money this way.  But what if someone were to gold farm by just spending the time to save up for the money by normal means in the game their playing?  It doesn't seem to be bad in that way.

For once they're forced to make the game as long as possible and offer rewards for long time gamers but also make it interesting enough for casual gamers. Games like World of Warcraft but even more so Lineage 2 or Everquest 2, here people are "forced" to play hours and hours to level their character and when they want good armour and items they need even longer. Since I play WoW I can say that it takes several months for a working person to reach the max level with his first char. So what happens when I'm level 60? I get beaten by another level 60 player like I was a level 40 just because he has a gear I could only dream of and will never achieve since I simply don't have the time to spend whole nights to get a Tier 1 or T2 set or even parts of it. So after putting months of work in my character he is still not maxed out and no match no matter how good I play for another players character because some people seem to be able to play 10 or more hours a day, seven days a week for months. This is frustrating. One of my friends bought some ingame money for real money on ebay. He's working a lot and loves the game but doesn't have the time to play so much (and I think he plays a lot) but he also wants to see some success for his efforts. I don't support his actions but I can understand them. I however am in the process of quitting WoW since it is no fun. Other games like Guild Wars do it a lot better (and practically no china farmers there as well). In WoW you basically push the 1 and the 2 button where your main spells/actions are located while in a battle and ignore your 100+ other spells since they are useless most of the time. When you are stronger than the opponent you win, when you are weaker you lose. In Guild Wars however you need to choose some of your spells to take along. Depending which spells you choose and how good you can handle them you'll win or lose since all max lvl chars are almost the same in strength with almost identical armour and weapon stats. Also you reach the highest lvl (20) a lot faster. If you take your time you're lvl 20 in about a month at first. Experienced players in Guild Wars Factions can get to 20 in about 10 hours time! In GW you win because you are the better player and not because you have the better equipment and that I find much more satisfying as spending night after night in Molten Core and and hope to find a piece for my character (and don't even get it when I don't have enough DKP since someone else of the group spent more time there...). But don't worry even Guild Wars offers rare items to hunt for but they are just so slightly better and you can get most of them a lot faster compared to other games when you have the right strategy and players who play extensive hours a day can get a real rare armour that costs 100 times more and is very difficult to obtain but - and now comes the fun part - it has exactly the same stats as ordinary armour but it looks cool as hell so many people want it. But people who can't have no disadvantage in game!

"Farming" is an activity that every raiding character in an MMO has to do to maintain his toon.  It's like going to the gym.

However, purchasing game gold from eBay with real life money is something I would never, ever do, even though I could afford to.

Why?

I've played the same main character in World of Warcraft since the day the game went live three and a half years ago.

I've grown very attached to little Kosmo.

Every single thing Kosmo has accomplished or that he owns he earned himself or with the help of his friends.  That keeps him an organic, honest, "real" personality to me.  If I had to farm Air Elementals for two months to buy the Magic Wand of Great Uberness, well, Kosmo and I earned that with our sweat.

If I tricked Kosmo out in gear and toys that I simply purchased with real world money, he would immediately stop feeling like an honest character.  He'd no longer be mine.  I'd lose interest in playing him.

Deleted UserGood point, Ray. I don't really play online games (Only Guildwars now and then), but cheating in any game does tend to demean one's experience of the game, doesn't it, especially with RPG's.  Although, MMO's have become so competitive these days  (guys have actually started killing one another in real life,- theyr'e so competitive), that this kind of thing is only to be expected. :'(

Totally off-topic: (sorry) Ogre, your'e not by any chance OgreB from gamespot's gamefaq site, are u? I've been wondering about that one for a long time, as I often see an OgreB there.

Hee! Hee!  [smiley=devil_smiley_grintail.gif]. So you prefer to be evil rather than a cheat.  Mmmm... makes sense.  I must say, virtually speaking, you could rate me as a killer of genocidal proportions.  [smiley=devil_smiley_grintail.gif]  Bwwahahahahhaaarrrr!
[smiley=furious.gif]       [smiley=evil.gif]        [smiley=devil_smiley_grintail.gif] .
Not that I really wanted to kill all those people (including quite a few non-human ones), though, it was in self-defence!   [smiley=angel.gif] :
Honest!  [smiley=angel_smiley.gif]
