Still, here in Portugal, we have a strong enough adventure (from Cryo, Wanadoo, Microids) games publisher (meaning that, it can make its way to the "New" and "Recommended" store shelves) so those adventure games are still seem on shops...

Status : Online | I can honestly say that no shop assistant has ever made a comment about any game I've bought. They just package up the game and take my money - which is what you'd expect, as what I choose to play is absolutely none of their business. As for my friends, most of them have barely heard of adventure games - but since I play lots of other games as well, that's not a problem.

Status : Online | Funny you should bring this up. About a week ago, I went to Best Buy and bought the Riddle of the Sphinx I & II combo pack. While I was making my way to the check-out, a group of teens stopped me, called me names, pulled my jacket over my head and gave me a wedgie. When a store manager came to see about the commotion, the punks diffused among the DVD shelves. I complained to him at length about the appalling lack of security, but while I was talking, his eyes wandered down to the box in my hands. He suddenly buried his fist in my stomach, and walked away with a self-satisfied laugh. That was not the end of my ordeal. In the check-out line, four people spat on me, two people called me a fairy, and one man who was certainly old enough to know better slapped the box out of my hands and kneed me in the face when I went to pick it up. The clerk was surprisingly merciful and let me off with a simple "get a life, loser."

Status : Online | From my friends, I get an attitude everytime I try to explain what an adventure is: "it doesn't have action and you are required to read, explore and think". They usually answer something like "Then, it sucks"" or "It's crap, then".
From store clerks, I usually don't ask them about adventure games. But, as they see I am looking for something, they try to be polite and say "May I help you?". After thinking for a while, I finally say I am looking for adventures like Gabriel Knignt or similars, then he offers me an action game, thinking that is what I want. After explaining once more what is the kind of game I really want, he just stares at me, confused, and I start feeling kinda like a freak of nature.
Nowadays, if a store clerk offers to help me, I usually just reply "Just browsing".
From my family, I get the attitude like "Hmm, this games looks interesting, I might play it sometime".
Of course, they never do... :-/

I have my sales clerk buds at a variety of stores keeping track of sales for me. I always figure it is very cool and get people all interested. I put my interests right out there. It does help bridge any genre gap that I play many sorts of games besides adventure games - though it is my first and primary love.
I just start talking about what I do and the games. In 20 minutes they are very surprised, curious and think it sounds great.
I look at them all as potential allies or converts. Periodical racks are great places to engage in gaming talk with people ranging from older people to small fry.

These days they seem to have no idea of the names of most adventure games, let alone be able to tell you anything about them, but I can remember after I'd played the first Monkey Island game (first game I'd ever played), going into the shop and looking through the games shelves, an assistant came over and suggested I buy - think it was 7th Guest - and raving on about how good it was. A few years after that I was stuck in GK2 and went looking for a hint book, when I asked for one, as we were not on the net at that time, the person asked where I was stuck and then told me what to look for! That just wouldn't happen today, when I've mentioned the Gabriel Knight games to shop assistants they now say that they've never even heard of them! Just goes to show how things have changed over the last 10 years or so! :

| Deleted User | When I bought a game recently I told the clerk I was looking for adventure games. He asked me which kind of adventure games I was looking for, fighting games or shooting games? The only adventure game they had was Cameron Files 1.

| Deleted User | I get attitude from my family and friends. The other day we were sitting around doing nothing and I said ''Let's play a game, The longest journey or Syberia?'' and they said ''Get a life! We don't care about this sh*t!''
I don't mention video games anymore, I'm almost ashamed to admit I play them. It's not like I can hide the boxes because I have tons everywhere in my house, it makes me happy just to look at my collection
