Adventure games are still rather popular in Greece comparing to the other countries, so clerks usually know what I'm talking about. They do sometimes give me the FACE, you know, the one that says "Here's the guy who's going to ask me about 1000 titles we don't have, why the hell doesn't he choose one of the millions we do have?".

Do you like classic adventure games? Check out Diamonds in the Rough!

Well, sometimes I get a surprised face from the store clerk like in - do you like adventure games? SO do I!

Still, here in Portugal, we have a strong enough adventure (from Cryo, Wanadoo, Microids)  games publisher (meaning that, it can make its way to the "New" and "Recommended"  store shelves)  so those adventure games are still seem on shops...

I can honestly say that no shop assistant has ever made a comment about any game I've bought. They just package up the game and take my money - which is what you'd expect, as what I choose to play is absolutely none of their business. As for my friends, most of them have barely heard of adventure games - but since I play lots of other games as well, that's not a problem.

Funny you should bring this up. About a week ago, I went to Best Buy and bought the Riddle of the Sphinx I & II combo pack. While I was making my way to the check-out, a group of teens stopped me, called me names, pulled my jacket over my head and gave me a wedgie. When a store manager came to see about the commotion, the punks diffused among the DVD shelves. I complained to him at length about the appalling lack of security, but while I was talking, his eyes wandered down to the box in my hands. He suddenly buried his fist in my stomach, and walked away with a self-satisfied laugh. That was not the end of my ordeal. In the check-out line, four people spat on me, two people called me a fairy, and one man who was certainly old enough to know better slapped the box out of my hands and kneed me in the face when I went to pick it up. The clerk was surprisingly merciful and let me off with a simple "get a life, loser."

From my friends, I get an attitude everytime I try to explain what an adventure is: "it doesn't have action and you are required to read, explore and think". They usually answer something like "Then, it sucks"" or "It's crap, then".

From store clerks, I usually don't ask them about adventure games. But, as they see I am looking for something, they try to be polite and say "May I help you?". After thinking for a while, I finally say I am looking for adventures like Gabriel Knignt or similars, then he offers me an action game, thinking that is what I want. After explaining once more what is the kind of game I really want, he just stares at me, confused, and I start feeling kinda like a freak of nature.

Nowadays, if a store clerk offers to help me, I usually just reply "Just browsing".

From my family, I get the attitude like "Hmm, this games looks interesting, I might play it sometime".

Of course, they never do... :-/

Nope never get 'tude except on forums.

I have my sales clerk buds at a variety of stores keeping track of sales for me. I always figure it is very cool and get people all interested. I put my interests right out there. It does help bridge any genre gap that I play many sorts of games besides adventure games - though it is my first and primary love.

I just start talking about what I do and the games. In 20 minutes they are very surprised, curious and think it sounds great.

I look at them all as potential allies or converts. Periodical racks are great places to engage in gaming talk with people ranging from older people to small fry.

I've noticed a difference more in the knowledge of store assistants over the last few years than in  their attitude.
These days they seem to have no idea of the names of most adventure games, let alone be able to tell you anything about them, but I can remember after I'd played the first Monkey Island game (first game I'd ever played), going into the shop and looking through the games shelves, an assistant came over and suggested I buy - think it was 7th Guest - and raving on about how good it was. A few years after that I was stuck in GK2 and went looking for a hint book, when I asked for one, as we were not on the net at that time,  the person asked where I was stuck and then told me what to look for!  That just wouldn't happen today, when I've mentioned the Gabriel Knight games to shop assistants they now say that they've never even heard of them! Just goes to show how things have changed over the last 10 years or so! :

Deleted UserWhen I bought a game recently I told the clerk I was looking for adventure games. He asked me which kind of adventure games I was looking for, fighting games or shooting games?
The only adventure game they had was Cameron Files 1.

Deleted UserI get attitude from my family and friends. The other day we were sitting around doing nothing and I said ''Let's play a game, The longest journey or Syberia?'' and they said ''Get a life! We don't care about this sh*t!''

I don't mention video games anymore, I'm almost ashamed to admit I play them. It's not like I can hide the boxes because I have tons everywhere in my house, it makes me happy just to look at my collection

I do sometimes feel I am off in my own world when I go look for games in my town. Most of them only carry games for Playstation and Xbox and don't keep games of any kind for the PC. There are still many people that say computers are for database and office work and not to be used to play games on.   A lot of us are the ones that were brought up on the old C64 and Amiga and we are the ones that have seen how much fun a really good game can be.   There it also the group that got hooked on Adventure Games by Sierra too and that adds up to a lot more that you might think.

Every now and then my wife will wander into my office while I am playing adventure games and shake her head at me. This weekend, I was playing Cameron Files: The Secret at Loch Ness and she wandered in while I was trying to shoot Nessie with a laser (oops... spoiler). The resulting paroxysm of laughter was clearly directed at me, not the game. That's okay. I will get even with her next time I find her reading Grisham.

P.S. The Secret at Loch Ness is one of the most illogical games I've ever played. What a dreadful mess.
