I don't think it was. He made it all up.  His upcoming game The Lost Crown is based on the short-story "A Warning to The Curious" and he didn't write that.

The original short story "
ark Fall" was written by Jonathan....I don't think he ever released it to the public though.

Yeah, I asked for this awhile ago, it says all over the Internet that it's based on a short story he wrote, so I'm sure it is, but I looked all over and couldn't find it. So I guess he didn't release it. :'( It's sad because I would have liked to have read it.

Has anybody asked Jonathan directly about it?

I miss my Bubba: 1986 - 2006.

Really?

He's a member on here, I think, but he doesn't post that often. I hear he's working on a third Dark Fall game, and also a game called The Lost Crown which is to be released late this year.

The short story was written by myself, and Philip Philippou back before discovering that interactive fiction was not only affordable, but exciting too. The story was included with a few copies, a long time ago, in booklet form. A few people still have them, some have passed hands on Ebay and others are sitting on shelves. Philip also voiced the character of Andrew Verney, in DF1, and the telegraph voice in DF2 (narrating the Ballad of Flannan Isle).

We are both hopeless romantics. Who believe the great thing about English Literature is how it survives, and evolves. Japanese Horror (the originals rather than the popcorn makeovers) exhibit themes suggested by James, Dickens and even Du Maurier (who wrote The Birds). For every creepy lank haired Japanese horror girl, there's always going to be the question: "who exactly are these ghosts, and do they really hate us?". It's a fun, philosophical idea to explore, but I'll always hope that they don't hate us at all. Hence me joining http://www.thishauntedland.co.uk, and attempting to find something unexplainable, and reassuring.

Hopefully, the Dark Fall games (including DF3) will suggest a possible reason for hauntings, rather than remain aloof and without idea. The Lost Crown will explore one persons delving, into the 'unknown'. That doesn't mean there will be ghouls, victims and explanation. Just ideas. Some of them are original, and some of them are genre based. There's still no proof that ghosts exist at all!

I really like the ideas suggested in 'A Warning to the Curious'. They fascinate me. The ghost exists in one mans mind. It's his greed made corporeal. I like the idea so much, I built a website about it two years ago: http://www.awarningtothecurious.co.uk; a book I read in childhood, and haunted me in adulthood via the BBC film of the same title. Both are very strange, and I highly recommend them to any interested in ghosts, existentialism and the landscape around us. Sadly, a strict James re-telling would be problematic. There's only so much moustache stroking and bluster a modern audience can stomach.

Lastly, there's a few secret areas of The Lost Crown website which may provide some info on the Dark Fall story. The games, so far, have dropped a few hints. Vimal's room, in DF2, features a whopper!!

P.s. Nearly forgot. Hi Kap!

Just a quick mention that there's a scrapbook area at Darkling Room. The short story is bound to appear, sooner or later, as well as downloads for old game projects like The Displacement and Distant Echoes. At present, there's some interesting bits and bobs, like some tech tests for both Dark Fall games and some unabridged scripts. Should anyone be interested...or find themselves a bit bored, you can find the scrapbook here:

http://www.darklingroom.co.uk/scrapbook

Lastly, I'm hoping to add some new features to The Lost Crown website, in the next few days. They will include new screenshots, further character profiles and an article on how the British landscape has been presented in supernatural film, TV and radio. It's been fun to put together, but makes surreal reading.

Wow, thank you! I am really looking forwarding to The Lost Crown, and Dark Fall 3, which I heard was going to be called The Dowerton Experiment. Is that coming out next year?

I hope that there will be proof, in the near future, that ghosts do exist. I'd also like to read A Warning to the Curious, and look forward to the Dark Fall short story appearing soon!

Thanks for your time.
